Grassy Knowles posted:I actively dislike that you posted this in this thread. Well, I’m not sure what kind of a warped mental state you live in that you could read that article and come up with the sick interpretation that you did. The victim is described as “a great dude” and “a bright light”. Impale means “pierce or transfix with a sharp instrument.” There is no mention or insinuation of any type of sex crime. You probably need to turn off your phone and computer and go get a grip on reality. Have a nice time, I sincerely hope that you recover from whatever issues plague you.

I don’t think my reading is in any way unwarranted here remembering how Abner Louima was reported TW: article’s implied sexual violence quote:…66-year-old victim impaled through his torso behind the counter…

I am personally equally uncomfortable with speculating the victim was raped based on the information given in the article as I am with his brutal murder being posted here for laughs. One of your supporting points is just that the article described him as a dancer. Do you think it does anything for the the victim or his family for people to be posting about if his tragic and awful murder also involved him being sexually violated? If that's something that has any evidence at all to point to it, and the family wants it to be known, then let them be the ones to make it part of the conversation. Please don't invent true crime style conspiracies about murder victims, please don't invent extra salacious details not present in the reporting to win an argument on a forum. I'm sorry, this makes my skin crawl. You don't need to proclaim he was probably raped because homophobia exists and he was also murdered, that doesn't help anything.

An account of a clerk being brutally murdered is not something that I wish to see in the “weird news” thread.

I would rather it not have been brought up in thread at all, and my skin was crawling the entire time I read it because a golf club breaking through an abdomen doesn’t just happen and authorities don’t call something grotesque in prepared statements arbitrarily. The article was worded in a way that I think makes clear what happened to anyone who was reading news in the late nineties and intentionally signals something about the safety of a specific community in a city that is known for police diminishing the severity of hate crimes. That being said, between this and ‘twerk will set you free’ i think I’m fine just ejecting from the thread entirely so I wish you all well and am dropping this discussion.

Grassy Knowles posted:Same trigger warnings as prior. I actually think grotesque is a word that gets used in cases of people being brutally beaten and impaled, even without rape, and if this person was raped and it was not mentioned in the article, bringing it up as speculation without actual evidence in a forum thread still feels insanely violating of both the victim and their family's right to privacy about this brutal murder. I understand being hypervigilant about homophobia. It affects me, and I also experience this vigilance. I hope it is not being implied that objecting to this speculation can only come from a position of privilege re: homophobia, because it certainly does not. In the context of a discussion on homophobia and hate crimes and how they get covered up it might be relevant to discuss this. All you had to do here though was point out a brutal murder is already a bad fit for a funny thread. This real person doesn't deserve to have conspiracies out there about if they were or weren't sexually assualted during their recent brutal death. No benefit to us or the gay community comes from making that up absent evidence.

Being a stowaway on an airliner shouldn’t be a crime. It’s not like on a ship where they’re drinking into the fresh water rations. Charge them for the marginal cost of fuel at most IMO.

That’s the one where the pilot got sucked out a window that was broken or missing a screw or something right? And they managed to hold onto him even while landing in an emergency. IIRC, he was blinded due to the air/cold, but amazingly lived. I do a lot of flying for work and when I first did, I read all the airplane disaster stuff, so I vaguely remember this story. Weirdly, reading all the flight disaster stuff made me much more confident in flying now.
