Are there any good running podcasts about disasters, manmade or natural? There used to be one called thepodcastofdoom years ago by a guy who was a risk analysis expert that was fascinating and great but it's not running anymore. I really love Swindled so I'm looking for something similar in tone to those.

Well There's Your Problem goes very in depth on historical engineering disasters. The hosts and their chemistry can be a bit love them or hate them though

Yeah, if you're looking for something akin to Swindled, do not go in on WTYP, a show that is about 30% 'hosts cackling at own jokes' by volume.

I couldn't get past the banter. It's very much one of those, "one guy recites Wikipedia while a couple idiots 'humorously' interject" podcasts. The main guy's solo YouTube series was much more up my alley, but he must have enjoyed shooting the poo poo with his buddies better as that fell off years back.

Causality on the Engineered Network is a good podcast by an engineer about engineering fuckups. There are 51 episodes and new ones drop from time to time.

Thanks, this one is good.

Causality is really, really good.

WTYP is good, but the aforementioned banter is polarizing. I've also found that their reliance on slides and diagrams makes them better YouTube viewing than podcast listening.

Gently enveloping the target with indiscriminate love.
Is there a good podcast where people are reading and discussing Douglas Adams books? And now that I am thinking about it, also Terry Pratchet.
I thought about it after the Prancing Pony podcast joked about pivoting there next, and I am looking for something similar with deep analysis on the verge of overthinking the books while staying funny.

Also is there a thread for book reading and discussing podcasts? I couldn't find one, but maybe it just has a strange name.

Because they want people to give them attention, as you are doing now. Also, profound mental illness, so unless you want to end up named in a court filing by a crazy person, probably best to just not engage.

Doesn't the writing challenge in CC do a podcast? They did for a while at least.

I doubt they have profound mental illness with the sheer amount of money they have dropped on the forums in the past period of time

Attentionseeking sure, but hey, I still want to hear that dude’s justification for spending hundreds if not thousands here to just get instabanned every time

i'm looking for a podcast that's made up of people (3 or more) that's very laid back, and fun. like friends just shooting the poo poo type thing. it can be about comedy, t.v., film, anime, video games, current events, whatever.

I enjoyed the first episode of springleaf, the new James Acaster podcast in which he plays himself, but reveals that he was an undercover agent in the world of standup comedians all along. It’s very silly, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Oh poo poo he made a podcast about it?! That was an old stand up set he did at the Fringe. I'd love to see how he develops it. Man's hilarious.

Someone please explain how podcast advertisements work in the simplest possible terms, I was listening to JeffJeff's Bizarre Adventure which is Jeff Bakalar, Tamoor, Lucy, and SuperEyepatchWolf taking the former through Jojo's Bizarre Adventure- and also One Punch Man and Cowboy Bebop currently- and now the newer ones have crypto ads in the beginning.

I assume it has to be automated on some level because the second one was perfectly targeted for the US state I'm in.

It depends on which podcast app you use. Some just funnel data about you straight to servers and they insert the ad into the file of the podcast when you download it/while you stream it. Some don't do that directly, but they are able to tell from your IP when you stream/download the podcast where you probably are, and then insert the proper ad there. The Apple Podcast app tries to obfuscate this, but over time they're still able to build a profile on you via who knows how (resting your ID in the settings from time to time seems to at least get you to get more generic ads for a while in downloaded shows, but streaming shows, you still get profiled). Yet other podcast apps download all the podcasts to their own servers--some got in trouble because they would then insert their own ads over the ads that were originally inserted in the podcast, although when Stitcher did this everyone yelled about it and as far as I know that's not happening--but then hilariously you sometimes get ads based on where the server is located for some of these server side download apps.

It's hosed.

For what it's worth the tech doesn't seem to work if you listen to a show on dead metal like an old ipod classic, you get generic ads then.

I'm still shocked that podcast apps haven't disabled the skip button during ads yet. It's going to happen one day because we're not allowed any ad-free spaces in this life anymore, but I'm just surprised we're not already in that particular race to the bottom.

I’ve only just rarely started to get French language ads usually sponsored by the government. Most are just ads for other podcasts nothing localized x

I routinely get local-ish ads in mine, but it heavily depends on the podcast. Some don't have that but for others it is basically like the commercials on the local TV station with a mix of national and local stuff.

Having local ads for podcasts from a completely different country always messes with me for some reason. One moment I'm listening to a very American centric podcast talking about whatever and next thing there's an ad about farming equipment in New Zealand.

Sometimes it's not the bomb that's retarded.

With VPNs you can easily get ads in German in English-language podcasts, too.

In Belgium I've almost never gotten any ads that aren't another podcast. Sometimes I get lucky and there are no ads at all (probably because the company doesn't care about foreign markets or isn't compliant with it).
Recently I've been getting some ads in French when working in Brussels, and when I listen to the same podcast at home about 10 km further, they're in dutch.
Noticed similar stuff when I visit the in-laws in Montreal.

Search engine is one of these podcasts that sometimes doesn't give me ads during an ad break.
It's a pretty good podcast btw. I didn't think it was gonna work after Reply all was such a hit, and he picked such a broad subject for a podcast.
