The show would be better without the music telling me how I'm supposed to feel. It's very un-Nathany to see him in a cinematic production instead of his faux documentaries.

I like the music. Keeps a feeling of suspense going.....when in reality.....the stakes aren't really all that high. And it's extremely hard to root for these two characters.....as they repeatedly turn away from good.....searching for great.....and then having to settle for poo poo. I feel like they deserve the "curse" brought upon themselves. The suspenseful music keeps tricking me into thinking that the other shoe might drop at any moment. Or it might not. Keep watching to find out!

It also adds to the comedy element. Insanely ominous music playing because Whitney may have to sell her property to a guy with scattershot socio-political views is extremely funny.

Like, it's not even scattershot. That guy seems to be their absolute dream customer and he really appreciates the concept of the house. Except that for some unknowable reason he is a complete cop fanboy. It's a giant red flag with a blue stripe on it, but Whitney was really expecting to find more faults than that one so she had a clearer decision. If he turned out to be a gun waving redneck who keeps a photo of the January 6th in his briefcase, the decision would have been a lot simpler for her.
I'd give that guy the benefit of the doubt. Maybe in his youth he once met a cop who acted as if he'd be a nice person and that absurd idea just festered like a tumor in his otherwise alright brain.

The dynamic of those two is getting worse and worse. Asher is a bit of an opportunist, who keeps the bottom line in mind and is quite awkward, but in general he seems to be genuinely well-meaning. Whitney on the other hand turns more and more into a monster. She clearly had this dream of living on her own power and rejuvenating a neighborhood and being praised as a savior from childhood and whenever something turns out slightly different from her imagination, she starts to lose it. Basically, she's a bridezilla, but it's the renovation documentary rather than a wedding.
In the beginning she seemed like the more sympathetic one. I guess it's a race to the bottom with those people.

Dean Cain's character, at least from my lefty perspective, makes sense as a guy that probably isn't that into thinking about political issues but means well. Unless prompted to reconsider, it's easy to default to the general cultural vibe.

Support the police? Sure, police, fire, and ambulance work hard and have dangerous jobs, right?

Support Christian missionaries? Sure, they'll do some good charity work and help out some less fortunate folks over seas, right?

Vote for a Democrat? Won't they just hurt the economy with red tape?

Just like any discriminatory view, expecting real life people to match the average of "their group" is silly. Whitney views herself as progressive and all that, but she isn’t the average progressive (thank god), but self reflection doesn't seem to be her strong suit. The scene does a good job showing how silly it is holding on to preconceptions when they are directly being disproven.

Mr Cain seems pretty game to do offbeat comedy stuff these days; he was quite good in s1 of Maria Bamford's 'Lady Dynamite'

edit: loving The Curse honestly. Safdie and Stone are unreal and Fielder is bringing some range that i didn't know he had; when he lets the anger boil over, and when he argues hard with Stone, he's really something else to watch.

while i do still think it's going to tip slightly more into 'actual supernatural curse' in the back half, i won't be upset if it doesn't. i'm betting that the curse storyline will become a core narrative in the show Dougie is making; the mould samples Asher took will end up seeing the family move into a mirror house; the casino will reappear at the least convenient moment, because, hey, they're cursed!

I thought the implication was that Asher had coached the guy ahead of time on how to approach Whitney

gurragadon
Jul 28, 2006

I didn't pick up on that, but I might have missed it. I think he was just a blue lives matter guy who was really into the survivalist/self sustaining aspect of the house. If you ask any American whether they have Native American ancestry there's like a 50% chance minimum they will say they do so I saw that reaction as pretty genuine.

Asher seems to be really protective of Whitney in a dangerous way though. When the first home buyer called Whitney "a little much" Asher freaked out and told her to shut the gently caress up or something similar. A complete overreaction.

Whitney seems like she has good intentions but thinks she can save a whole community by herself. Giving out her credit card number to the jean store so they wouldn't call the cop's is nice, but it also shows how different her economic situation is than everyone else in the community.

Or employing the guy for the coffee shop in the first episode without realizing the coffee shop might not actually be around the next day and when it was gone, she gave him a "security job" where she doesn't actually want the guy to do security and she isn't comfortable enough to approach the guy she's trying to help.

At first Asher goes to smooth things over perhaps, concerned the buyers are backing out he wants to go talk to Whitney, but as he steps away his pitbull wakes up and he's like "and you need to watch your fuckin mouth." The greedy opportunist part of him overruled in the end by his aggressive overprotectiveness of Whitney.

The music rules and was the first indicator for me that they were looking to bring the vibes of Good Time/Uncut Gems to the typical socially anxious interactions Nathan thrives in

The end of that episode that featured Alice Coltrane's "Jai Ramachandra" was so good. I thought Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) was doing the music, but apparently one of the three guys from Medeski Martin and Wood is doing the original score?

i think also he realised that it was a dead end to try and appease Whitney to these people, may as well triple-down on supporting her

Actually, they start more like, "I always brew my coffee at home, or buy the better one from my local community to give back to it and I save money by turning off the lights in empty rooms, which also saves the planet." Your part appears somewhere in the midst of paragraph four.
And yeah, that feels like exactly who Whitney is. I don't think I like her very much.

Pretty clear that they are far more involved. Probably gave her the money to start up and might even be actively funding the projects considering the way that Whitney doesn't appear to care about spending.....while Asher is constantly anxious about it.

iirc during the cherry tomato boys conversation in episode 1 whitney’s dad mentions asher being in debt to him for all the espanola speculation to the tune of over a million dollars; it’s clear that the entire flipanthropy house of cards, from the already-constructed passive homes to the foreclosed lots to the salaries of the production crew for the pilot is funded by whitney’s parents.
all of it may belong to whitney and asher in name, but ultimately this is just a nepotistic whitewashing project for paul and elizabeth, and everybody knows it (though whitney is doing her best to assert otherwise).

another theme prevalent in this show: contracts and the spirits thereof, getting things in writing, non-legally-binding agreements vs enforceable documents like deeds.

also: WHITEny and ASHer :riker:

The reveal is more that she is consciously in PR mode, or even full denial, over being a privileged white girl. Not having the self control to resist a tantrum to her financiers shows that she is, how some might say, "a lot."

Really?
I can't get a read on Dougie. It felt like he was coming onto Whitney really strong in the first episode, when she was recording lines and he was talking poo poo on Asher. But then he seemed legitimately despondent that Asher wouldn't hang out with him in the next episode. Also really interested in Cara's relationship with Whitney and the character in general.

I thought in the first situation he was trying to insincerely relate to her so that he could get her to talk poo poo about Asher. Same as when he was telling Asher earlier that he should roll his eyes when Whitney says something because it will add more drama to the show. He’s a reality show producer, he’s probably just trying to get maximum drama out of Whitney and Asher’s incredibly boring relationship.
