Dr. Jerrold Coe posted:np. archive dot org has all the godzilla films btw, and dub/sub versions too depending on which you want to see. i really like some of the old dubs done for domestic US releases, for example godzilla vs the sea monster. for the 70s films after smog monster the only dubs available are toho's export versions, which use the classic HK kung fu dubbing casts, so you get nasal australians and brits talking about godziller and ninjers. The early US dubs are interesting because a lot of time they’d film scenes specifically for those versions. Most obvious is all the Raymond Burr poo poo but also Mothra vs Godzilla (best Godzilla movie) has a big naval battle scene that’s only in the US version Also the US version of Godzilla 1985 (first Godzilla movie i saw) where everyone’s constantly drinking Dr Pepper and they change a scene of a Russian sub guy trying to avert a nuke launch to make it look like he’s trying to launch the nuke

Uncle Boogeyman posted:john wick 4 despite its absurd length was pretty good except for the really lame bits with the hobo dog assassin Racist. In all seriousness, I felt the movie dragged because every grueling quest was a step to another grueling quest. He has a big fight in Japan. Then he goes to NY. Then he has to go rejoin the clan and to do that Wick has to kill Scott Adkins. Then he has to go through this 30 minute long Warriors homage just to get to the final duel. I like certain touches and I geeked out over Donnie Yen and the Cuda, but I did feel like I was watching someone else play a long video game. And I still don't know why they couldn't find another way to get John Wick to the duel site. Why not hide him in the back of a van and have the van go to the venue?

Ok I've got a The Culture post. I just finished Look To Windward, so don't read this if you want to read that book and haven't yet. I liked this book a lot -- possibly the most so far out of the ones in the series I've read (those being this one, Player of Games, and Hydrogen Sonata). My biggest gripes are that its politics seem a little muddled for being so supposedly socialist, and that the ending wasn't great. The main event in the book's background is that an alien species of cat people called the Chelgrians have a strict caste system, and the Culture pursued its usual policy of nudging other species toward perfect post-scarcity socialism and total equality by repeatedly bribing all the Chelgrian politicians until they reformed the caste system away nonviolently. Then, according to the high-caste POV character telling us about it, the low-caste faction used their new status to launch a sneak attack on their former masters, leading to a catastrophic civil war, which the Culture ended by admitting publicly to having manipulated Chelgrian politics, leading both sides to go "whoopsie doodle never mind" and just kinda, like, go back to having a caste system again. Everyone involved agrees that nothing the Chelgrians did either before or during the civil war was actually their fault because Culture meddling was to blame for all of it. The plot of the book is about a sleeper agent working for the high-caste faction trying to get revenge on the Culture for forcing them to do all those war crimes against each other. Which is all bullshit, but the book treats it as a legitimate grievance, and that was frustrating to me! The Culture didn't make the Chelgrians horribly mistreat their underclass, and it didn't make both sides slaughter civilians indiscriminately either! All they did was try to skirt around violent revolution by implementing peaceful reforms, which if anything was being too nice! They SHOULD have just given the lower castes a bunch of future weapons and told them to have fun!!! Anyway, in the ending the sleeper agent accomplishes his mission, but the desired effect (killing five billion people to satisfy their weird non-theistic religion) doesn't happen, because the Culture had double agents in place and knew about the plan all along, meaning that retroactively nothing in the plot really mattered. A scientist who finds out about the planned attack halfway through the book and tries to get to a position where he can warn everyone about it is unceremoniously murdered and dumped into deep space, and then resurrected hundreds of millions of years in the future after all human civilization has died out -- this happened to him while he was frantically trying to warn the Culture about something it already knew. That's all pretty unsatisfying, so the book has an epilogue where its two biggest villains are graphically tortured to death, which oddly enough didn't help in my opinion. Now that I'm done griping, the main thing I was looking for from this book was more descriptions of what life is actually like within the Culture, which I didn't get much of in either of my previous two books since they take place largely outside of it, and I definitely got that. A lot of the book is describing life on Masaq Orbital through the eyes of outsiders (the sleeper agent Quilan, his target Ziller (who owns and is the best character), and an alien blogger named Kabe). They... are not complimentary about individual Culture citizens, basically thinking of them (fairly accurately) as spoiled children who are constantly on drugs and utterly dependent on their superintelligent AI babysitter, and mostly only talk to other aliens in little expat communities. But for where I am in my life right now that sounds pretty nice tbh, gimme future drugs and a robodaddy and let me just kinda veg out for a while IMO. I have a baby and a toddler and I'm exhausted. The whole sleeper-agent plot was fun, even if the ending kind of invalidated it, and I liked Ziller, Kabe, and Hub (but not Quilan), so in closing this was a good book with a couple of issues. Next up is another Discworld book to cleanse my palate and then I'll probably just read Consider Phlebas already

a big point of the Culture series is that the Minds are extremely liberal in their thinking and actions, and it's portrayed as stupid. you can't fundamentally alter a society by having them vote about it because that isn't how anything works. Minds are unfathomably powerful and intelligent, and they're also unfathomably myopic. it's why Contact always fucks things up so much and why SC even has to exist at all

Nonsense posted:the dune guy looks like the actor from Wonka That's intentional! If you read Charlie and the Glass elevator you find that Wonka gets frozen in space, only for thousands of years in the future to be revived and found the House Atreides. Chocolate factory/Glass elevator were always meant as prequels to the dune saga. In one of the original drafts of Dune Paul made the spice into spiced chocolate and it was through bribing the Sardaukar with delicious chocolate to work for him that he was able to get the upper hand over the emperor. The Freeman were mostly just relegated to singing the occasional song when needed.
