Ole Miss survives against UCF and is in position to head into the new year undefeated, Chris Beard remains a good coach and a bad person. Princeton did lose today so down to 7 unbeatens; JMU probably now in position to carry it the longest though all their toughest conference games are bunched pretty early in the schedule

Why would you even have a basketball team (or any sports) if you have 100 students enrolled

Was surprised to see its location is Minnesota. Was even more surprised that it's been kicking around in some form or fashion for a century. Ii'm not sure if that makes it better or worse than the Bishop Sycamores of the world.

every year Michigan State gets off to a slow start and i think, maybe this is the first year since 1998 Tom Izzo doesn't drag a team into the NCAAs to gently caress up someone's season, and every year he makes it happen. but maybe, just maybe, this is the year

This is as bad a start as I've ever seen from them though. It's definitely time to start thinking about the succession plan.

There's a lot of weird rumor poo poo about Juwan Howard right now that I can't find actual good sourcing on. One rumor is that he's stepping down to assistant for the year because of the health stuff. Another is that he got into some type of fight with the strength coach (Sanderson is a within-Michigan legend for developing sophomores).

It's all very odd and it's only this Undeadspin guy saying it, and later on he's asking for sourcing on similar poo poo.

Edit: Best I got is that Rivals said there was no physical altercation and no denial or confirmation on a shouting match type of deal.

They've got the talent to turn it around, and eventually the 3s will start falling for them. The problem is there isn't a lot of good opportunities to pick up big wins in the conference this year. @Neb would have been decent for them, but only Purdue, Wisconsin and Illinois are top 30 in NET right now, Ohio St is close, the rest of the conference will only get you quad 1 wins on the road. They already lost their home game with Wisconsin, and they only play Purdue on the road. The good news is the tough part of their schedule is at the end so they'll have a chance to turn it around.

MSU also has a history of getting benefit of the doubt from the committee on some pretty crummy teams. We were last four in a couple of seasons ago and there have been other years where the team just felt totally undeserving and bowed out early. I think 2010 was one.

More on the Juwan Howard situation:

https://theathletic.com/5134471/2023/12/13/juwan-howard-michigan-basketball?source=user-shared-article

quote:

An alleged confrontation between Michigan head basketball coach Juwan Howard and longtime Michigan strength and conditioning coach Jon Sanderson is being probed by University of Michigan human resources, leaving the program in a state of flux.

According to three team and university sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity because they’re not authorized to speak publicly on internal university personnel issues, Sanderson filed an HR claim following a heated dispute with Howard on Dec. 7.
---
The confrontation between Howard and Sanderson stemmed from a disagreement between an athletic trainer and senior guard Jace Howard, Juwan’s 22-year-old son. Jace Howard has not played this season with a stress fracture in his right knee and tibia, and questioned why he’s yet to be cleared to play.

Sanderson became involved in that dispute, and he and Juwan Howard exchanged words. According to a combination of witnesses and individuals briefed on the matter, no punches were thrown, but things became heated to the point where the two were separated.

This is likely A Thing because Juwan's been on a zero-tolerance deal since he punched/mushed that Wisconsin assistant coach. Must've been some real poo poo said for Sanderson to file an HR claim about it after being in the program for 15 years.

The Michigan thing seems to be fully over: Juwan back as head coach after the heart surgery, nobody disciplined at all:

https://twitter.com/umhoops/status/1735813033631285736?t=4W5ogULvcWn07gN5BjA9kg&s=19

Potential context is that Jace Howard was supposed to be out 4-6 weeks with a hairline fracture, it's been six weeks, and he just flew off to somewhere for a second medical opinion.
