But I remember the fella who told me. Big lad. Arms as thick as oak trees, a stunning collection of scars, nice eye patch. A REAL therapist he was. Er wait. Maybe it was rapist?

You've never truly lived if you weren't there for Project M on live servers. What an absolutely bonkers idea. Just the devs throwing ideas at the wall and briefly having it on test servers before bringing it to the live servers.

It was too beautiful (and broken lmao) for this world.

For anyone unfamiliar, a bit after Velious launched we got this:

quote:

Tonight we have patched something to the PvP servers that many players have been waiting for. The ability to play that gnoll, orc, or the cute and fuzzy rat. On your character select screen you will notice another button in the upper right part of your screen called "Monster". Clicking this button will randomly place you in a low-level NPC in a random zone. You will be given full control of the creature to do with it what you like. You may hunt and kill other creatures. You may even attack other players.

Some things to remember when playing your own personal monster (NPC).

You will not be able to interact with players or NPC's other than moving and hitting attack.

You cannot speak, trade, sell, or do anything else that a player can do.

You will spawn with normal loot for the monster you are playing and Player Characters will be able to kill you for loot and experience.

If you are a spell casting monster you might want to take a moment to memorize some spells.

Once you die, you will return to the character select screen where you may choose to return as another NPC or play your normal character.

You may gain experience, levels, and skills as this NPC, but once you die, it is all lost. You will need to start over the next time you choose to be a NPC character.

You can't zone as a monster. If you try to cross a zone-boarder you will lose your progress and return to the character-select screen.

Monster PCs (MPCs) can not loot, sell, or gain items. They only get what they start out with.

This ability to play a monster is being implemented for PvP servers only as we have no plans to implement non-consensual PvP on a non PvP server.

However, we are still working with this system. We may find other ways to implement Project M on the non-PvP servers that are acceptable. We aren't done looking at the possible uses of this new feature.

This was in a client where buffing npcs and stuff was possible. So if you could communicate that you were a monster player it was not unheard of for someone to buff you (though equally likely someone would kill you immediately.) It didn't last especially long as you can probably imagine, though it supposedly ended up inspiring the Darkhollow expansion a few years later

I played on test fulltime from vanilla till PoP, and I remember the pvp, race war and project M patches. Race war was fun, if not annoying, but project M was a whole new level of insanity. Groups of fire beetles ganging up on poor newbies; raid buffed orc pawns with ykeshas and hp jewelry. I'm surprised they even let it hit live.

New implementation of raids on Quarm, Secrets has decided to just go with instancing plus weekly/bi-weekly quakes instead of the not-instancing-but-basically-instancing daily guild rotational spawns

quote:

Private Guild Instances Are Available, Quakes Return!
Due to overwhelming player feedback about casual accessibility, and my own intuition on the subject, we've overhauled how raid rotations work - by scrapping them and replacing them with private guild instances. Don't worry, competition is still available via an overhauled Earthquake system!
Guild instances are accessible via the Knowledge book near any adjacent-to-raid zone where the tryout books were formerly present.
Guild instances require an officer from your guild, 12 guild members, and 18 players total in a raid to enter, as well as the requirement of all members in your raid being over level 30.
Guild instances have a combat engagement requirement equal to the above. If you do not meet the engage requirement above, players are forced to their bind point on any combat action, including friendly heals.
Guild instances have heightened respawn when compared to normal instances. This means that every raid creature may not share the same timer as open-world creatures.
If your corpse becomes unretrievable in a guild instance, fear not: The Graveyard system from Planes of Power is active in these zones, and your corpses will be dispensed every 2 hours to the adjacent zone where the zone-in book is located.
Guild instances do not award loot for any other creature than the raid target(s) in question. For the current instances, this is the following:
Nagafen's Lair (Instanced)
Lord Nagafen - 7 Days
Giants (all) - 24 Hours

Permafrost Caverns (Instanced)
Lady Vox - 7 Days

Kedge Keep (Instanced)
Phinigel - 24 Hours

Please note that if not otherwise specified, creatures in instances have 24 hour respawn rates, and give significantly reduced experience. (virtually nothing)
Guild creation has been disabled via petitions until a lockout system has been created for the Guild Instances.

EarthQuake revamp
Earthquakes are now scheduled to occur every 3 to 7 days.
Earthquakes now have a duration of three (3) hours.
Earthquakes no longer have a ruleset. Server Rules 9.x and 10.x are suspended during earthquakes for raid zones. Please assume that if your zone doesn't give a message about NPCs being re-popped, that you have to adhere to rules 9.x and 10.x still.
The current zones considered to be raid zones are:
Permafrost Caverns
Nagafen's Lair
Kedge Keep
On an earthquake triggering, everyone in the zone is evacuated to the zone-in to ensure fair competition. If you wish to avoid the evac, position yourself outside of the zone.
Earthquake timers are now visible to guild leaders and officers ahead of their trigger time. No more batphones. Typing '#showquake' will allow a guild officer or leader to view the next earthquake time.
Earthquakes no longer have guild engage requirements due to the rule 9.x and 10.x suspension during the three hour period, and thus can be pickup grouped.

I don't really understand why #showquake is limited to guild leader/officers. I also don't totally understand why the quakes are random but known. I'd like to know if I'm going to get booted out of a zone I'm exping in without having to be in a guild/leadership.

football.

I kind of like the idea of reworking itemization in EQ because there are a lot of bad items that could be made more interesting. Like that Warhammer of Divine Grace is a Cleric only melee weapon that procs Yaulp, which increases strength and AC. A weapon that drops off a big ole dragon should be useful and not a piece of poo poo (although I'm not sure how useful proc'ing a DD to undead is for a Cleric).

But Quarm presented itself as "classic EQ up to PoP", right? Anyone who went to the server to re-live their 1999-2002 glory days is gonna hate any sort of changes like that.

Yeah I mean, willingness to address the obvious problems that exist on every classic EQ server isn't bad on the surface. But the inconsistent and ad hoc approach to big system changes will eventually piss a lot of the more hard core people off. It's a race between that and the blatant favoritism really. But it should still be a fun time with a good, active population for most.

Be true, Unbeliever.
Population is already going down. Granted it's still much higher than I thought it might be at this point but it's been decreasing lately. I imagine we will see a sharp decline once legacy stuff stops dropping. Everyone anticipates that I figure. Would be something if Secrets decided to leave them in to stave off a population drop. Concerning the other changes I don't think there will be too much awful backlash towards onesy-twosy changes but as was mentioned the inconsistency and firing from the hip will erode player trust over time. I'm still not ruling out That One Big Change that makes pop drop over night but maybe that won't happen. Also have to figure that Secrets has some pretty thin skin if you've ever caught her streams so we shall see.

I think there could be a small bump when planes come out. A ton of people are done leveling and just logging in to raid right now, Jan 1st there will actually be content again

The legacy stuff is kind of a mystery right now though:

So most of it will stop dropping Jan 1st (except Jboots, those will still drop off Drelzna) but there's some other system, in addition to the casino (which I assume will be a big plat sink), which will make legacy items not significantly valuable somehow? No clue what that could be (and she says the items will "still have value" so presumably they won't just become No Drop)

so the post-1.0 Legacy item changes have been put into place.

tl;dr the legacy items are getting replaced by NODROP variants.

Secrets posted:

There are a number of revamps to Time-Limited Legacy Items. These new versions will be functionally identical, require specific levels to acquire, and will all be no drop. The Time-limited factor will only apply to legacy items that are able to be traded, and are traditionally time-limited, nerfed, or removed in EQ's timeline that we select to be.
They are, currently, as follows:
Manastone -> Manarock (30) (Functionally Identical)
Rubicite Armor -> Pinkicite Armor (25, 30) (It's Pink, Functionally Identical)
Thex Dagger -> Thexian Shiv (0) (Faction Requirement)
Scimitar of the Mistwalker -> Falchion of the Mistwalker (30) (Functionally Identical)
Lustrous Russet Armor -> Brilliant Russet Armor (46) (It's Teal, Functionally Identical)

As well as this:

Secrets posted:

The following items are not traditionally legacy items in EverQuest, but have seen a legacy flag added to ease camp congestion. They will not be removed at all at any point during the timeline, nor will spawns be eased:
Bag of Sewn Evil Eye (30) (Staying indefinitely)
Fishbone Earring (20) (Staying indefinitely)
Glowing Black Stone (15) (Staying indefinitely)
Robe of the Oracle (25) (Staying Indefinitely - Changes to Standard in Kunark)

I guess Manastones will be useful for PLs

In the time honored tradition of EQ dev you’d think someone would’ve done a 5 second google search for a pink gemstone to base the discount Rubicite off of.

I’m still casually playing but my friends have given up the idea of raiding here since it’s quickly sliding into EZ Loot Custom Content Server. Insecure devs and admins are the worst. Some people wanted legacy items but some people didn't, let's keep them in game but make the original versions special. Some people wanted competition, some wanted rotations, let's have both at the same time with different rulesets, and also instancing but without loot, except you can win a rotation spot... there's just no coherent idea at all, it's all compromise after compromise.

Yeah, honestly I haven't touched Quarm in a couple days because of this. I understand the desire to not remove things from the game to be fair to those who haven't gotten it, but I feel like it was a bit of a misleading change of pace. I confronted the reality of 'this goes away on January 1' by leveling a couple alts to 30 so I could get dark elf masks. I'm not really upset that it's sticking around - mostly just wish I knew that ahead of time. Would have played my hand a bit differently in that case.

I do enjoy the fact that a guild can't just forever monopolize the legacy spawns - that was in there from the beginning. The problem I have is the flip-flop, honestly.

Ah well. Might poke at it again when Kunark's out, but my motivation is gone for now. Nothing new with EQ, obviously; I've been yo-yoing like this for years after all.

Levelling an Iksar Necro, got bored of Wakening and moved to twin giants in Frontier.
Since those are camped half the time, and chain-resisting slows when they dont insta-break roots i moved on to find myself in the giant fort in Burning Woods, currently lvl 56.84 now.

Kinda liking it a lot, and i noticed a Greater Warbone Skeleton roaming the front gate path a lot of times - so i thought "why not try undead-charming that guy since wiki stats say hes pretty awesome appearently".
But, of course, i dont have the fabled pre-nerf-CoS (and prolly never will) so heres my question:

Is it feasible to try fighting with a charmed undead pet that could potentially wipe the floor with me if charm broke out of the blue if you dont have the good CoS, and if so, how exactly would you go about it (in detail)?
My only experiences with undead charming so far have been rather frustrating at low levels, when i gave it up until a short episode in KC at 55 which ended up with my pet breaking charm and slapping me to paste in the absolute clown fiesta that is KC-courtyard-okta-pulling-group, so im hesitant to even try to utilize it.

(Which is also why i wont go to HS basement.)

e: im on Blue, didnt find a separate thread for the server, dunno if its much of a difference though.
