Very annoying issue since I updated to 14.2, anyone else?

The Messages app is showing a phantom unread message.

I can get rid of it by quitting the app, removing it from the Dock and opening it again, but as soon as I get a new message the unread count changes to 2 and gets stuck at 1 after I read the only real message.

iPhone is updated and normal, not showing anything unread and all the messages are synced properly.

pzy finally fixes this bug, he finds a text message asking him to extend his car’s warranty

This was happening to me on macOS, and it turned out that a single message from **2015** somehow manually got marked as unread.

Nah, it's just the inevitable consequence of four layers of file organising logic.

~/Music is where you are supposed to store your music stuff, like all your documents go into ~/Documents
./Music is where the files managed by the Music app goes, like how your Photos files goes into ./Photos Library.photoslibrary
./Media is where the actual media managed by the Music app goes, to separate it from artwork, backups and the like.
./Music is where the music media is stuffed, to separate it from other types of media that the Music app might handle.

…and below that, it's just artist and album separation, of course.

Sure, some of it is just a remnant from the iTunes days, where music media needed to be separate from other audio, such as tones, audiobooks, podcasts etc., but Music.app still uses the same logic even when the need for it is largely gone, be it for reasons of backwards- or forwards compatibility. In fact, it's almost a bit of an issue that the separated apps that now deal with those other media don't follow the structure, and instead insist on having their own storage spots that can't be managed by the user as easily.

I’m going to experiment with using PhotoSync for transferring photos off of my phone and Neofinder for managing them when the new year rolls around. Supposedly Neofinder will make a database but leave all photos where they are and just generate thumbnails. PhotoSync will let you export HEIC/MOV and/or JPEG at the same time, it’s a nice app once you upgrade it to pro for six bucks.

I’m with you. I don’t like the photos app, and I just want to manage my pictures as is and not in a database.

Genuinely confused by your original question—Your photos are on your NAS, does your MacOS not mount your NAS filesystem? And do the photos not show up like any other file there to be opened with Preview? Isn’t interacting with files like that the primary purpose of both the coverflow view and quicklook feature?

I don’t know what feature you’re trying to use that works on normal files but not photos

For the last few weeks my iPhone has been taking longer and longer to sync, getting stuck at "Step 2: Preparing to Sync". After some DuckDuckGo'ing, I found the way to fix this was to find the "com.apple.CrashReporterSupportHelper" process, and kill -9 that PID. Then I yank the cord on my iPhone, plug it back in, and instant sync.

However, it seems that this process stays in the -9 state instead of going away, and the next sync won't work until I reboot. (Right now, Music is showing the "Syncing..." status in the bottom left corner, despite the phone being unplugged.). There's no PID for the stuck process.
code:
iug@IUGs-MacBook ~ % sudo launchctl list | grep -I crash
(PID	Status	Label)
-	-9	com.apple.CrashReporterSupportHelper
This doesn't seem like a good state to be in. Can I somehow restart this process, at least so I can kill it again when I want to sync again?

I wish Apple would fix this, but that's asking too much to get them to look at the Music app anymore...

BobHoward

The only thing white people deserve is a bullet to their empty skull
"com.apple.CrashReporterSupportHelper" is part of Apple's infrastructure to upload crash reports for their software (and third party software) to their servers. If it's dead, you shouldn't lose any sync functionality, because it's not part of sync.

For exactly that reason, I'm a little suspicious of the advice which claimed killing it should help syncing out. You sure that the success wasn't just due to yanking the cord and plugging it back in?

I mean, I can imagine scenarios where killing the crash reporter helps. Something along the lines of "sync program crashes, can't be restarted until the crash reporter exits, but the crash reporter hangs forever". It just seems odd that someone would tell you to kill the crash reporter though, usually the fix for a sync problem is to kill the sync daemon (which should lead to launchd automatically restarting it).

Tomorrow I’ll try again without killing that process, but so far it’s the only thing that’s worked for me.

You can hook your phone directly to the Mac but if you do, Photos always wants to grab it. Personally, I want just the photos to be exported to a specific folder so I can upload them to the NAS and to OneDrive and bypass Photos altogether.

You can change the default on connect behavior in Image Capture. My phone never opens Photos. Image capture is what you’re looking for. I wonder if a shortcut could be done to do it automatically for you.

Do you mean use credentials that were previously stored, or store new credentials that you entered while in Private Browsing mode? The former is expected, but the latter would be really bad.

Private Browsing basically makes your profile data “read only”: it will still use your history for autocomplete, let you access your bookmarks, and use stored credentials. It’s not anonymous browsing (though Chrome’s naming is really bad here) or a “clean profile”. In Chrome and Firefox you can use profiles or containers for an emptier browser data setup.

I believe all browsers do this in their respective private modes.

There isn’t really a good reason why the browser shouldn’t be able to access its own password storage in a private browsing session, since as someone mentioned, the private session is only meant to restrict saving new data (history, sessions/cookies etc).

I mean more in the "plug phone in and look at the motherfucking photos like a filesystem" which I vaguely recall being able to do a million years ago via iTunes and Windows but it made sync all fucky. Thankfully I haven't had to do this in like a decade, but the wife refuses to delete photos despite them being on the goddamn NAS (loves her "favorites" and you can't export them in a sane way). From what I recall of the last time having to offload everything to make space it's all obscured in a way that is in theory user friendly but a massive pain in the rear end if you're trying to do something specific. I could be wrong but I really don't want to be in a place where I have to deal with it enough to be sure.

No, the 4-second thing is loving terrible because literally the only Mac application which does that is Chrome and it comes across as "Google really really does not want you to ever quit Chrome". Also web browsers can be set up to minimize the impact of accidental cmd-Q by re-opening windows and tabs from the previous session, so there was never any need to introduce that horseshit.

They did completely redo Time Machine for AFS-formatted drives and it works a lot better at least for physically connected storage devices, and that seems to be my experience.

My heavily-used work and home machines have been chugging along for a couple years with USB drives since they introduced AFS support for Time Machine just fine.

However people still have said that networked shares still don’t work as well itt but I don’t have much experience with them

A lot of major browsers have it. Opera has you press Cmd-Q twice in a row. Firefox prompts you on quit.

Or, well, both browsers can be set to do so, anyway.
