Hunter even makes that riff on Shore Leave's old squad.

There's a fair few generics in there but I think that's got Treister's son, and Sergeant Hatred? (Who's a riff on Sergeant Slaughter, who was in both the WWF and GI Joe for some reason)

Doc and Jackson have also outright said they have trouble coming up with names and gimmicks for OSI members, no matter how ridiculous, because GI Joe has already done them all at some point.

They should have done some kind of riff on William Refrigerator Perry, who was a football player who was also in gi joe for some reason. Maybe Purple Pete Rose had a period in the OSI before turning to a life of crime.

Yeah, and considering 21 has that "Porkchop Sandwiches" shirt at the start of Season 2, I think they make up a little of the OSI DNA too

You can't pull rank on murder.

I read that they had problems coming up with parody characters because when they researched it they'd find it was too similar to an existing character.

A friend of mine is a big GI Joe fan and former combat engineer and we've spent countless hours ripping on how little sense some of the franchise makes as well as figuring out what the GI Joe versions of some of the less prolific trades are. Like there has to be a whole logistics, admin, and/or support section with names like "Red Tape", "Spreadsheet", and "Bin Rat".

There is the scout Sneak Peek and medic Lifeline, and Scoop the embedded reporter. Administration Joes aren't even a stretch, the comics probably have some.

There actually were generic Joe troopers early on as equivalent to Cobra troopers but they phased those out since they didn't sell.

GI Joe kinda gets undersold as a franchise that never really took itself that seriously. I really like the IDW comics take on Cobra as a sprawling, factional, mish-mash of an organisation that as well as a megacorporation it also has not-Scientology as a public front that is almost as good an information gathering op as the actual spies, complete with at least one informant in the Joes thanks to their version of confessions, and turns out to have actual ties to genuine mystical poo poo. (also maybe the Inhumanoids til they found out they didn't actually have the rights)

Of course, the original backstory for Cobra being basically a pyramid scheme that got so powerful it attracted the attention of arms dealers and terrorist organisations is already almost too ridiculous for Venture Bros.

Larry Hama wrote every issue of the Marvel comic and he took it extremely seriously. If there’s something dumb in one of those comics, it was demanded by the toy company.

Apparently Fast Draw was also a typist and Jinx was a finance clerk. Cross Country was probably logistics branch through and through being a transport specialist.

Unfortunately his insistence that he be allowed to wear a Confederate flag probably led to a lot of sessions with Captain Clusive and eventual reassignment.

The "Special Missions" comics especially are less cartoon villainy and more stuff you'd see special ops forces doing.

The aforementioned Cobra comics published by IDW are a separate continuity from Larry Hama's long-running G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero series that ran through Marvel, IDW, and is now at Skybound/Image, over 40 years and 300 issues later.

And as much love as I have for Hama's work, that Cobra series, written by Mike Costa with Christos Gage, is my favorite G.I. Joe/Cobra material of all time. The Cobra: The Last Laugh arc (collected in an out of print hardcover volume that I highly recommend to all) is up there with the best comics of the last 20 years.

I wasn't there, but I saw a bootleg video of the "Let's Everyone Smoking!" con panel. After every question and answer (or in the middle of such an exchange), that crazy 1970's-ish music would play for a few seconds while Doc or Jackson went around the stage, aggressively smoking.

Apparently one of the things with Gundam, the old school ones in particular, is that it plays up some of the absurdities of war in that of course not everyone's taking it seriously all the time, because human beings are like that. There's apparently bits where Char is friend with Amuro, not recognising him outside the Gundam and just treating him as someone who happens to be on the opposite side of a war they're not actively fighting at the moment.

This isn't really true in MSG, Mobile Suit Gundam. They meet but it isn't a friendship more like a chance encounter.

0080 is more what you are thinking of. The MC is a young lad named Al of 11 or 12 who is friends with a young Zeon soldier named Bernie assigned to covertly destroy the new gundam being tested there or risk he colony being nuked, and also friends with his next door neighbor Christine whom is said Gundams test pilot and also Bernie's love interest. As you might imagine things end poorly.

That's kinda what I meant, I got the impression it was basically him being cordial off the job, and probably a helluva moment of realisation given I imagine Amuro recognised the famous weirdo in the mask but Char didn't recognise him. (Now that's an irony almost worthy of Venture Bros)

Almost a pity that the Venture Bros writers probably only have a passing familiarity with anime, given the most references we get are Ro-boy (to be fair a bit of a deep cut to riff on Astro Boy's... interesting features) and Driver X almost certainly being a reference to Racer X. (As well as The Stig) Char is absolutely the kind of archetype they'd have fun riffing on.

...he'd totally be Hank.
