There’s universal values and social progress which all societies and everyone should advocate for.

Unfortunately geopolitics, and the status quo will slow or even stop social progress and the advocation of reform.

Staying within the picket line, and kumbaya carnival style protest with banners and slogans don’t work when the other side fights dirty.

I mean the whole area is a giant red light district, but it's not like women get dragged off the street on the regular and there are loads of foreign women just hanging out in the bars in the area.

It's not the safest place on Earth, but it's not the worst.

China's large and increasing population meant that increasing food production, principally rice, was a top priority for the Chinese government. When the People's Republic of China was established in 1949, the Chinese Communist Party made it a priority to pursue agricultural development.[46] They sought to solve China's food security issues by focusing on traditional crop production, biological pest control, the implementation of modern technology and science, creating food reserves for the population, high-yield seed varieties, multi-cropping, controlled irrigation, and protecting food security.[47][48][49] This began with the Agrarian Reform Law of 1950, which ended private land ownership and gave land back to the peasants.[48] Unlike with Mexico, the Philippines, India, or Brazil, the beginning of China's unique Green Revolution were unrelated to the American "Green Revolution." Rather, it was characterized by the government's sponsorship of agricultural research in concert with peasant knowledge and feedback, earlier international research, nature-based pest control and many other non-industrial agricultural practices, in order to feed the rapidly growing population.[48] [50]

Prominent in the development of productive hybrid rice was Yuan Longping, whose research hybridized wild strains of rice with existing strains. He has been dubbed "the father of hybrid rice",[51] and was considered a national hero in China.[52] Chinese rice production met the nation's food security needs, and today they are a leading exporter of rice. In recent years, however, extensive use of ground water for irrigation has drawn down aquifers and extensive use of fertilizers has increased greenhouse gas emissions.[53] China has not expanded the area of cultivable land, China's unique high yields per hectare gave China the food security it sought.[54] In 1979, there were 490 million Chinese people living in poverty. In 2014, there were only 82 million. Half of China's population had once been hungry and in poverty, but by 2014, only 6% remained so

Not really. It's a big prostitution area so you can probably get yourself in trouble but it's not like dangerous dangerous. Maybe pickpocketed at worst? It's right in the middle of one of Bangkok's main tourist areas, didn't strike me as unsafe.

E: I think the difference between seedy/sleazy and dangerous can be tough to tell when you're outside your cultural context. That area is full of prostitutes and 50-something British dudes. It's seedy, not dangerous.

They're really good at it. What other country is constantly bouncing between authoritarian monarchy and authoritarian military junta, with straight up tanks in the streets sometimes, and it doesn't seem to affect the tourism draw even a little? It's skill.

OK thanks. I've never been to Thailand, and the people I know who vacation there always get beat up and stabbed and chased by people wielding big sticks, but apart from the last one they do that back home as well. (I've never been because I'm not compatible with the climate there, not because I think their experiences are indicative of the country at large.)

Yeah like I definitely know people who have been stabbed in Bangkok but they weren't anywhere near the red light district. They were alone in an alley, but that could happen in any city. The cops still made an arrest using the local CCTV system.

Lol, she went to Nana Plaza (central area for prostitutes for foreigners, was dressed exactly like a prostitute, stood on a street like a prostitute and freaked out when some farang asked her how she was doing as a introduction. "Anyone could grab me here and do anything to me!".
She got arrested because thailand is in a bad spot with chinese tourism atm. Chinese economic woes and several blockbuster movies in China (which depicted thailand as a place where you will get kidnapped and sold to a call center), plus some other incidences have caused number of chinese tourists to drop from 5 million to under 3,5.
Thai government is really sensitive right now about everything that might cause extra losses.

I'd like to see these guys do travel content. Can they get beat up and stabbed in Singapore? Kyoto?

Thailand's not as safe as those but you do have to go looking for trouble, it's not likely to just randomly find you.

There is good cinema coming from mainland China, but those movies aren't really breaking box office records outside or inside China. And I doubt tankies who think modern China a great place really appreciate movies from guys like Jia Zhangke whose work doesn't paint a pretty picture of Chinese society. So it is understandable that people dismiss Chinese cinema as jingoistic Wolf Warrior spectacles. But there's a lot of good poo poo coming from there if you know where to look.
