This was also my reading, that Whitney was telling Cara about the burn victim show under the pretense of liking it, as a passive-aggressive way of getting Cara to see the show so she'd get grossed out by Dougie.

It turns out that Asher is the one who has the magic powers. The world molds in the way he perceives it. He is the Creator and his own creation. The girl planted some doubts into his perception of what is normal. The seems of his mind extend and by the end of the series the universe unravels.

Somebody is gonna get shot by Fernando by accident, maybe one of the little girls who tiny cursed Asher. If they don't do anything with the gun, I'll be disappointed because they brought it up in multiple episodes.

I don't really know where the whole plot is going resolve at though because so much has been brought up and not fully addressed. Dougie's DUI, Asher and the casino, Whitney and her parents and the whole HGTV setup to the show need to be resolved.

The preview for the next episode on IMDB says "Whitney and Cara become closer as Asher's past comes to light." So maybe something with the casino and its relation to the tribes in the area?

I thought it was interesting that the playful interaction between Asher and Bill at the casino was included in this week's recap, but the only scene related to it was Bill ignoring him at home Depot. Seems like Bill that thread is coming back next week.

Man that was really impressive how well he cold shouldered him. When cornered he gave the absolute minimum and cut out first opportunity. I reckon on top of the last interaction being so obviously awkward and painfully weird, the casino is on to him and has instructed everyone or at least bill to not engage.

When asked about Dougie’s ridiculous style ,Safdie said that he is directly based off reality TV producers he’s met in real life. Also he wears multiple kinds of cologne at the same time while in character.

I don’t know how true this is but fielder said that one of the female crew members said she wasn’t attracted to Benny Safdie but thought he was hot as Dougie lol.

I think you're missing the point. The gun shows that Fernando knows this is a rough neighborhood but Whitney's anxiousness around it highlights that she doesn't accept the reality of life in the community and would prefer it to be gentrified. Nobody needs to get shot - I don't think this is that kind of show.

To me this was Whitney's attempt to ruin Cara and Dougie's relationship out of jealousy, in that she wishes she was actually Cara's friend and is upset Dougie and Cara connected so easily. She wants Cara to watch the show and feel disgusted.

Thinking about it more, I am not sure what her goal with the "it's hilarious lol" is - maybe she does think Cara will like it and wants to bond over it? I'm actually less clear the more I consider it. She was conflicted about sending that last message. Curious what others think.

I think she sent it to indicate the conversation as light-hearted while setting herself up to agree with whatever Cara's reaction is to Dougies show. Either way Cara goes, Whit riffs on it and thus uses Dougies connection with Cara as social currency. I think she hesitated because she knew the first message left her open to being asked why she brought it up, so this forces Cara to give away information on Whits terms

I can't wait for next week. This is one of the best shows I've watched in a very long time. I don't get the scattered complaints that it's slow or not amounting to anything. I wouldn't even be too surprised if none of the Chekov's guns fire and we just see the slow dissolution of a marriage and crumbling of the HGTV show and Española project. It's perfect exactly as-is.

I got that part it just seems like such a strong point to put a gun in the show. I think like they showed Whitney not fitting in with the neighborhood well with her interactions at the jeans store, the walk around the neighborhood trying to talk to people and her interactions with Abshir.

I also think he's going to shoot someone innocent in the day because they moved his shift to the daytime, but I don't think they mentioned it in the show unless I missed it. Whitney and Asher are the curse on the people living in the neighborhood they interact with.

Edit: If there joking about a million dollars for the ending than I doubt this would be the conclusion completely, I just hope they didn't get so into making the ending unexpected that it ends up being weaker than a more expected option.

If anything Fernando is going to get shot by a robber because he's caught unarmed because Whitney didn't like the vibes of him carrying a gun.

Then they can do a follow up on camera with his mom grieving for him.

I took it as a pricey PC joke. It got a big laugh out of me because Whitney (and me) thought it was some amazon package probably filled with paper towels or a shirt or something and it was a loving alienware computer.

Both of those reasons definitely work, but I think they also went with something like Alienware (rather than say Apply that is just as pricey if not more) is that it is a slightly niche name that someone like Whitney probably wouldn't know.

The guy is mad that his fancy computer is gone and Whitney has a few options. She could just express some condolences over the missing package and not mention anything specific about the computer, say something open ended like "Alienware? Sounds pretty high tech. I hope you can get it back soon," or any other reaction that could fall under the heading of "just be kinda normal."

Instead, she decides to charm this fellow and let him know how she is soooo interested in the niche thing she just heard of, give him a few wink and gun pew pews, and how she is going to go home and google Alien Invasion computers or whatever for some reason.

While social interactions are complicated and people can be both genuine and awkward at the same time, these interactions with the locals lean more towards "I can give a smile, pretend to care about whatever their interests are, and turn these simple folks into putty in my hand" than "I am actively invested in the problems of the community, but am a little clumsy sometimes." She is clumsy with this stuff, but that isn't the reason she doesn't come off well.

short feeling one but tense nevertheless, we’re past the halfway point and it seems like the show currently leaning towards having no supernatural elements factoring into the resolution, with asher, whitney, and dougie’s curses being largely self-inflicted and wrought of privilege and insecurity, but no matter what direction the show goes in it’s still got my full attention. whitney and asher are milquetoast, banal, selfish, and have few redeeming qualities, but stone and fielder are doing some incredible acting making them feel like real people presenting as reality tv people within the show within this show.

I really appreciate how subtly on the nose the show is in regards to lampooning the voyeuristic artifice of reality tv - flashy brought up how dougie and whitney discussed how boring the rough cut was over footage of paint drying, but I also appreciated how dougie’s addition of the comical royalty-free music over asher’s pottery faux pas immediately cues the viewer into observing him uneasily, just like the sting of the show’s score does when whitney agrees with dougie’s advice to unfavourably portray asher in order to spice up the footage.

(the plan? portray my husband as an impotent, inconsiderate, and unfunny wet blanket in order to draw scrutiny away from myself, my parents, and the ever-bubbling class conflict within the community)

my read of the text to cara is that whitney is trying to strengthen her relationship with her through the tried-and-true mean-girl method of making GBS threads on a mutual, in the same way that dougie and cara got on texting terms by commiserating about whitney. the addition of the lol is an obviously disingenuous red flag to a person that’s actively ignoring her pleas to sign releases and responds to her texts with a thumb react, and it seems like cara likes dougie because he’s a lout, but it’s not like whitney has ever been shown to be an effective communicator

did anyone else think that the picture of the minigolf indian statue looked a lot like nathan’s elongated reflection in the water basin as whitney and the fireman were faux flirting? cara said she wanted to burn it…

Also, Emma Stone's best performance of her career easily, and absolutely the best of the year.
