TBF early 80's PCs were already plenty annoying to move and those luggable designs were useful for people moving from place to place with no guarantee of a working IBM compatible they could use at arrival.
|

They mainly died out because by the second half of the 80s plasma and lcd displays got good/cheap enough to be a much better alternative
|

Also once the IBM standard killed all the serious competition, people could take only the PC chassis (and maybe keyboard), certain they would have a suitable monitor available. people kept that up for 90's LAN parties!

For portables, absolutely. Especially when a monochrome screen was good enough, Plasma was awesome. Now, LCDs were pretty weak before active matrix, but even there the weight savings were good for most 80s use cases.

It wasn’t backlit and the quality was pretty garbage, basically a giant version of an LCD watch/calculator screen. https://youtu.be/5uVbKS2wJ-0 On a side note, while they may be pretty underwhelming by today’s standards I thought it was kind of dismaying that most of the videos I could find were how-tos on ripping out the guts and replacing them with a modern LCD display. I doubt too many of those were sold and they’re fairly rare these days.

I’d rather a thing be updated to have utility than hang out in some hoarder’s hovel unused at all.

I had an absurdly high WPM in my computer classes in high school and my teacher was extremely annoyed that I did it without ever using the home row. I’m a hunt and peck typist but I’ve been using computers since about the same time as I could read, so it works for me. They had these blue cardboard covers that were supposed to cover your hands so you had to touch type, and if you got caught sneaking a look at the keys too often you got the ultimate punishment: A black rubber cover for the keyboard that stopped you from seeing the letters. Eventually I just started asking for the black thing at the start of class so we could skip the whole “escalating penalty” rigamarole, and it had zero impact on my typing speed. Which made her even more annoyed than she already was. ![]()

Home row has always seemed pointless to me and a lot worse ergonomically than just pushing the buttons you need. I also annoyed teachers by being the fastest in the class by far despite not using home row and only using three fingers on my left hand and two on the right. I could touch type because I learned to type from playing Infocom games in a room dimly lit enough that the key labels weren't visible. Today, I use one of those rear end in a top hat keyboards that is completely solid black and blank. Dip Viscous has a new favorite as of 09:44 on Dec 17, 2023 |

The thing with home row is no typing teacher or book ever explained it right. You're not supposed to have your fingers resting on the keys and then only move one finger at a time, that's absurd. The home row is more of a general guideline for your hand position to minimize the amount of movement, but the best typing style is whatever feels most comfortable to you.

Every time I actually think about how I type, I feel like an insane person. My left hand does ok for the most part, probably because of video games. My right hand is terrible and the finger I use to hit a key is entirely dependent on whatever the previous key was. Sometimes my left hand reaches over to hit the y key.

I type pretty much the same way, as someone who just developed the skill over time rather than being taught to type. I’m right handed but when typing lefty does like 80% of the work and righty is predominantly hitting the space bar with my thumb with my index finger hitting the occasional letter. I also find I can only really touch type effectively as long as I don’t think about the fact I’m touch typing, at which point it all goes to poo poo and I have to look at the keyboard to reorient myself even though I clearly know where all the keys are.

That reminds me, I also got berated for using the "wrong" shift keys. If I need to type a capital P I use right shift because the buttons are close to each other, but no, the P is on the right half of the keyboard so you MUST USE THE LEFT SHIFT FOR IT OR YOU WILL loving DIE.

Feelin' my homies who also cannot use ergonomic keyboards because you type some middle keys with the "wrong" fingers My pinkies exclusively cover the shift and enter keys and I was still the fastest typer by like 50 WPM in my school when we kept track of such things. I bet home row is fine for average speeds but has a ceiling beyond which it starts to actually slow you down

Get a programmable ergo keyboard and type however you want it's the best, the big thing is reducing wrist strain not using the 'correct' fingers for the 'correct' keys.
|
![]() |
|
Wrist strain is what I meant by home row being worse ergonomically. I can already keep my wrists at the angle they'd be at using an ergonomic keyboard while typing on a regular one because my index fingers typically come to a rest on the bottom row.

Like sure there's two shift keys, but there's only one control key, etc. I only use the left shift key and left modifier keys. I’d chalk it up to gaming, but I learned to type long before I played any games that really benefitted from mouse and keyboard input. Meanwhile, I only use my right thumb for hitting the space key.

Same here, so I now have a 60% keyboard and remap those obsolete right modifier keys to be the cursor keys, for maximum confusion of anyone who attempts to use my keyboard.

The true tech relic is caring about typing speed when every single device is about to have crazy accurate AI-assisted dictation and typing won’t be a thing except in situations where you need to be quiet and even then, everything has keyboard shortcuts and predictive text
