It is definitely a bit like that, but it's not like you can only use Assail and have luck. Maybe at lower levels, that would certainly explain running into people who think you can. It really is best at taking out hordes or unarmored stuff like shotgunners and ragers. You should still be spending a lot, I'd say the vast majority of your time with your staff out. The way I use it is to just dump and go back to staff. Alt fire is good for taking out the odd far special, but usually I'm using my Surge staff for anything closer.

If you get an Assail psyker on Heresy or Damnation you are probably in for a bad time I agree with Evil Kit in that it is pretty well balanced after the nerfs (it was horribly overpowered at first, shorter cooldown and more damage on spam) but it needs to be used correctly, meaning hitting elites and specials. edit: and only spamming it in certain situations, I should add. edit 2: I just realized I have been playing Heresy all evening and not Malice like I though while leveling my ogryn haha Martout fucked around with this message at 23:08 on Dec 16, 2023 |

(I think psyker has the best argument for ability regen curios of these)

Long range assail has always been too weak to take out anything besides snipers and bombers, and too slow for those. On Damnation runs, someone with a gun will wax them before your dart even arrives.

Assail is extremely fun to use and is very good against particular enemy clumps the director likes to poo poo out (basically anything without a helmet). The way I use it is with an axe and autogun to cover off option and when I have full knives and something bad is happening I throw all the knives so that all the enemies suddenly die. I think it's really powerful and I like it more than lightning because in a poo poo team you can lightning a whole horde and be like "hay guyz.... guyz!?" because they all walked away assuming the horde/event is over because they're not being punched in the back of the head to remind them that there are baddies in the game.

As far as curios go, I think having three wounds (in total, not curios) is the sweet spot, because that'll cover you against 90% of bullshit that happens, and for the remaining 10% nothing would have saved you anyways. The obvious exception is Zealot, who might have all the wounds for Martyrdom, or just the invulnerability talent as their hedge against bullshit. For health versus toughness, I lean towards health. You start with more health than toughness, the curios have bigger multipliers for health, and I think they might stack multiplicatively so you just get bigger numbers across the board? The value of toughness also scales weirdly depending on how often you get hit - if you take one melee hit at full toughness, it doesn't matter. If you take a second hit, it starts bleeding into your HP anyways. Once your toughness gets low, it's mostly HP damage now. In my experience things are mostly going fine and you're barely taking HP damage, or things get really messy and your toughness is completely broken. In the former case you don't really need the extra toughness, and in the latter the extra HP is more margin for stuff like eating a sniper shot or poxburster explosion. Some builds might get more value out of toughness thanks to talent picks, but as a general rule I think most players would get more value out of health.

It solves 95% of your problems on lower difficulties and the enemy density is low enough you don't run out of charges. Especially if Psyker is a new player's very first class, they will just not learn any of the really crucial habits you need to actually play the game and that. That is why I hate Assail so much lol. When you see a Psyker with Assail in the lobby when loading into Damnation, they're one of two things: a competent player who understands the use of the ability and knows how to swap between all their tools to keep themselves alive and helping the team steam the ride. Or they're gonna eat poo poo repeatedly and occasionally help out with a horde or some shooters. God forbid you get a crusher or mauler patrol.

Thanks for the tip about pre charging bb on right click. I played a few runs that way and it's nice and smooth with empowered psionics and I was popping lots of gunners. Wiped in the amphitheater though in the carnival, and probably wouldn't have had I brought shield instead of scream or w/e that ability is called. Scream is nice for simple peril management and warpfire, but it's easy to not realize just how much work shield is putting in until you don't have it and are pinned down under gunners. I think i'm in the minority preferring bb to assail, but it's just more satisfying to use. Though I've barely played with smite because I hate how it locks you in at such a slow walking pace.

I'm sure I'm in a minority here but I think while Brain Burst can use a buff, it's still better than Assail because it covers a niche that isn't already handled by literally every character on your team. Being the best at shredding distant poxwalkers doesn't mean much when a single Bulwark or Sniper shuts down your entire run.

I prefer BB to Assail but I only gave it a handful of runs before shrugging and giving up on it, even pre-nerf I just couldn't jive with the rhythm it wants on Damnation. I'll admit I'm probably biased as well because I had a lot of experience with BB prior to the talent rework so the addition of peril reduction nodes to make BB more spammable was just gravy. I do miss having access to the talent that gives no movement speed reduction while quelling though, because swapping back to staff all the time is a lot of extra fiddlyness.

I don't like assail but BB just takes too long to charge so I don't really like it either. Yes sometimes I can pop a bomber from far away or whatever but I find the whole 'you can duck behind stuff' thing doesn't matter so much because of how often you get bonked by a random poxwalker.

I don't think assail is the problem, it's just that it attracts the type of person that likes to hang back and do nothing but spam knives at the trash you're currently using for toughness regen and who crumples the second melee happens. Assail itself is great for killing specialists or thinning a crowd that needs thinning, it just stinks on elites. Decent for increasing your peril if you're not running an illisi too, if you need that sort of thing. also it looks cool as hell

Nope, you start from scratch. Unlocked Blessings are account wide, everything else, like your inventory of gear is not. I imagine that your cosmetics unlocked for your psyker will be available for a new psyker if you roll one up. I think there is a mod that allows you to change the voice (and height!) of the reject.

Is it worth it to pick up Darktide yet? I heard some mixed things about it at launch, and while I've heard it's gotten better, there's still some negative reviews at the top of the Steam page citing issues about solo play, private games, and a cash shop. I played Vermintide 2 back in 2018, and logged 18 hours into that. I liked it okay, but I don't remember a whole lot about it, and after finishing the final story mission, I felt like it didn't have a lot of replay value outside of just doing the same missions over. However, that might have changed since then (I heard it got some updates, and I know there were DLC packs added). I don't know how different Darktide is.

If you don't like doing the same missions over and over, it may not be for you. People have that same comment on stuff like rogue lites and I've never really understood it, so it's hard for me to say. But Darktide is in a really great place. The visuals, audio, combat, all a significant upgrade from Vermintide. The only thing lacking in my opinion is the better maps / set pieces from Vermintide. And then maybe the fact that Vermintide has specific characters that are more fleshed out and in Darktide you are playing Veteran #463. I think I'm up to like 400+ hours at this point. Discovering how strong the bayonet is on the Helbore, I hardly ever touch my own melee now. It will headshot kill most specials and elites and will stagger ragers, and on top of that it comes out so fast that it out damages point blank fire. I made a good 370 accatran vid and I'm disappointed in thst gun now though, the sound design on it is so good and it feels sick to use, but it just doesn't compete with other las weapons or autoguns in damage.

The game is fantastic but is most assuredly not a solo game. That is def one complaint I will not understand. I'm unsure what a negative review about private games would entail? You can check a box that makes your game private and people not able to join. Game is fantastic but if you aren't heavy into repetitive run based play you'll probably not enjoy it all that much, as others have mentioned.

Yeah, the complaining about paid cosmetics thing was always a little out of hand and now has gotten kind of silly. The problem isn't the existence of a cash shop. You can have opinions on that, but a game pushing all their content updates for free and using cosmetics to keep development going isn't some immoral act. The issue at release was that the game wasn't in a good state and choosing to release paid cosmics at that time was a bit tone deaf. And that the paid currency bundles were doing the thing where it was never the right amount to buy something, which as far as I know has also been fixed. Solo play, there's gotta be a mod because people do solo runs on YT all the time. Private games... I guess? Again, not really a reason I'd leave a negative review for. If you don't like doing the same missions over and over, you won't like Darktide - that's the kind of game it is. It also definitely isn't a solo game in any way, shape or form, outside of afore-mentioned YouTube challenge run type stuff. The gameplay is really good but the levels are repetitive-looking imo. Like I can differentiate them a bit but even after 200 hours a lot of the rooms blend together in my head, and the finales don't feel like they have much in the way of variation. If the gameplay doesn't keep your interest up, I don't think anything else will. The cash shop has 99% of the interesting cosmetics in a game you already paid $40 for, I don't love it but this is going to be something that's subjective for everyone. There's no actual content or gameplay stuff in there. I think people have been conditioned to handwave this away since so many games do it now

Repetitive levels is my main remaining complaint, which could be "easily" solved by adding some level of randomization to the map details. Payday 2 had "the vault is on this side this time" or "this door now has a camera on it" or "there's a truck you can use for cover" elements that added a surprising amount of variety to "rob this drat bank again" gameplay. The comparison to rogue likes is apt, but those have had procedural level generation for decades. Does Darktide have anything like that for level geometry that I've just never noticed? Did Vermintide? Power cell locations and daemonhosts are about it for needing to adjust your pathing. Plus needing to maintain two dozen QoL mods, but at least I can do that now. More destructible terrain would be nice too. Give cover objects hp?

I would pay 12 bux if I got every outfit in a release, or the bundles had way more stuff (like recolors). Instead they've both increased the price of the individual skins as well as lowered the amount of stuff in each skin bundle. The very first releases had the full outfit + a charm + some weapon skins. Now its down to just the clothes. Crazy.

Especially with the most recent levels coming out showing that Fatshark gets how to make a fun and interesting level with all the gameplay elements they have currently. Blasting the stimm production globe in the finale of the second Carnival level is a big "hell yeah" moment every time. I believe one of Fatshark's original goals was to do proc gen or at least make it easier to crank out levels by having pre-made level pieces they could slot together but it seems pretty obvious they stepped that back some and went with more curated level design. That's okay by me.

I didn't buy cool hats from the cash shop at launch because the game was weak outside of some very excellent basics in the gameplay. I bought a heap of cool hats from the cash shop this week because I am smashing a heap of time into the game and it rules now. I want to support it with money so they make more content. Playing with friends or goons is vital to enjoying this game ongoing imo. It feels like being back in the halcyon days of L4D. I don't really get why anyone would play solo. I didn't really like the individual characters at first compared to Vermintide's cast, but now I think I might prefer it. The characters have so many interactions that it feels like you are a real wild bunch, especially with friends where you get all these really funny chats. I think it works great playing as veteran#143732 running the meat grinder with your fast pals and winning. I'm very attached to my characters.
