Some of the sicko poo poo about the American empire is that it isn't obsessed with things it needs to keep the empire going like most throughout history. America is huge geographically and will never run out of room even if Yglesias got his wish and there were billions of Americans. It's absurdly resource rich so it isn't Japan tearing up Asia for the many things it lacks. We don't even have an issue with oil.

It just grinds up the world and causes mayhem for nebulous reasons and for the benefit of very few. I don't mean "the 1%" I mean so much of what it does benefits no one but a handful in the right place at the right time. It's pointless. If Hillary had been a British imperialist she would've at least ripped up some of the luxuries of Libya to display in her palace but instead she just warmed herself on the knowledge she tore apart a country and caused untold suffering so the 'American led rules based international order' was somehow stronger. Looting Mongols were far more respectable.

That's why even the evil realpolitik defenses of America's Israeli policy are dumb. No, it wouldn't need to invent Israel if it didn't exist. This doesn't safeguard the prosperity of Ohio or even Manhattan. I'm sure Biden doesn't know why he does this and is just following some lizard emotional echo from his younger days as an Israeli advocate. Which was probably just because of campaign donations. Some pissant $5k donation in the 70s or 80s leads to genocidal chaos decades later Americans are dumb.

edit:

as opposed to the current US where...

Just because America is capable, hypothetically, of surviving without neo colonial exploitation doesn't mean it'll actually be able do that consdering its current state. Israel doesn't HAVE to exploit poorly paid Arab workers to keep its construction industry afloat, nor does it NEED to import poor workers from southeast Asia to do its agricultural work - Israeli workers exist - but it DOES and when those people go away, as we're currently seeing, the economy doesn't look too bright.

Yeah the US could probably survive without imperialism but it wouldn't be nearly as well off as it is, and there's certainly a question of the political crisis that will hit when US hegemony is well and truly beaten. Like the ghouls in charge will lose their loving minds if the US can't even pretend to police the world anymore, in a similar way to how Israel has gone off the deep end in response to having its own perception of invincibility shattered.

Nothing about the quality of life of the average American has anything to do with the finite resources of the empire. People don't have homes because there is a lack of homes. People don't have food because there's a lack of food. People don't freeze in the winter because there's a lack of energy.

Do you think there's a trickledown effect of Haliburton receiving sweetheart contracts in Iraq or something? The vast amount of material wealth is gobbled up by the top percent so that could be reduced many times over without any impact to the majority of Americans. This is like suggesting the national debt is real and preventing Biden from spending money on infrastructure. The allocation of resources is capricious in America and as it grows it's never a tide that lifts all boats.

The empire can fall and the powerful can decide to rip the losses out of the lower classes, but they are already doing this when the empire is rich so how does the status of the empire matter to that?

America is such an absurdly rich country it can self-sustain a high quality of life, but it doesn't mean that it would ever choose to do so.

The heart of the British Empire at its height was an absolutely awful place to live for the vast majority of its population. The whole reason they invented racism as we know it was to prevent the local exploited proles from realising they had infinitely more in common with the foreign exploited proles than with the ruling classes benefiting from the exploiting. Having even remotely functional infrastructure for the majority of the population is entirely optional to empire... well, beyond the capacity to create the administering class with some vague competency along with the glass-eyed sociopathy.

That said, it's also key to keep your empire up by keeping others down. Hence why the US has its 'allies' implement austerity and neoliberal rot to keep them completely dependent on the US militarily... of course, the particular case of imperial rot has the USA get high on its own supply.

China, the richest country in the world in 2021 according to McKinsey, only just got half of its population out of extreme poverty. That means many of them are still in regular poverty. Now think about India and Africa, between them well over a third of humanity, who are not blessed to live under the CPC. What do you think quality of life is like for the developing world? About the same as America?

Also the national debt is real. It is a way to siphon taxes to capital in the form of interest payments.

Hillary having to flip on TPP because it was such an election drag was pretty funny. Biden had actually been working on TPP V2 and had to abandon it because of this conflict lol at these trade deals.

Let me state this empire wealth poo poo another way. Warren Buffet does not materially benefit from all his trailer park serfs. Yes, a number somewhere increases but nothing about the money even gives Buffet a bigger yacht. Buffet is not oppressing those people because it improves the quality of his life and he's selfish. He's just doing it because of bad wiring in his head.

When Americans get fat on fast food and watch netflix it is not a devil's deal in exchange for bombing people in the Middle East. They are not going to stop getting iphones because America abandons Israel. In the Snowpiercer metaphor of America, dead brown people are not the necessary grease for the train to continue running (it has its own poor to exploit for that). All the things that 99% of Americans say is necessary for a good life are not dependent on American foreign policy adventurism.

To get America to stop loving around abroad it is not necessary to convince joe average they need to take a QoL hit. The people most affected require multi-dimensional math to track their wealth and it will take mathomancers to notice the change in their finances. The reason America has any degree of comfort is not a direct resource transfer from the global periphery. Like Warren Buffet America gorges on all this wealth because it can and not because it needs to.

Again, this is very different from England in the 19th century where it was a cold lovely island. America is gigantic and absolutely bursting with resources. America already conquered many people (Native Americans) and took their land and wealth and can live fat on that for at least a few more generations.

Weka posted:

What do you think quality of life is like for the developing world? About the same as America?

That has nothing to do with what is required to maintain the average American QoL. The challenge China was dealing with was boosting their economy without all the devil's bargains the West did to industrialize in the first place.
