True, regional pricing matters. NEOs are going for about £90 vs Eclipses for £140 so not quite the price differential you experienced.

My only quibble with the NEO is that at its core its just a well made OEM brush virtually identical to the ones that get bundled with the generic China-compressors. Of course there's actual QA involved and you can get spare parts, but at the end of the day it's got the same slightly fiddly design.

Spill the tea plz.

I signed myself and a friend up for a painting master class at gencon. When we arrived, what we got was seven pots of gw air paints, one put off contrast paint, about two hours of airbrush basics, and a lot of pitching from the pair doing the teaching in hopes we would but h&s airbrushes, which were their sponsors.

Oh, and an avatar of Kaine, which we ended up trading to someone who plays warhams.

Left me with a bad taste in my mouth for both gw and h&s, since this was supposed to be an official gw event

I hope that wasn't Caleb from CK studios. I know they've been working with GW and H&S lately.

Having looked them up now, they do look familiar, so a definite non zero chance.

To add insult to injury, they said they were teaching different stuff in each class so be sure to come back for... Another 150 bucks a pop.

You could try sky-earth NMM or some variation thereof. Basically you're simulating the reflection of sky and earth on the glass. Paint a horizon line across then jewel top and bottom portions with contrasting colour. Standard is brown earth and blue sky by PoptartsNinja has a bunch of other combinations I'm sure he'll chime in about soon!

You can also paint in designs to simulate a HUD on the glass? Might not be thematically most accurate for Battletech but it looks cool. Do some circles, squares and lines of text. You'd keep the jewelling but probably make the centre bit darker to enhance the contrast.

Anyone have a good tutorial on magnetizing? I have a half track for Bolt Action (28mm scale) that I want to be able to switch weapons on and I've never done magnetizing before. Would love to know what I should buy and how necessary it is to carve a hole and other such things.

Lostconfused

Magnetizing is pretty easy, I just started doing it a couple of weeks ago.

You need a pinvise and the correct sized bits, but that's enough.

You'll definitely end up putting holes in stuff, so maybe practice a bit on things you wouldn't mind damaging too much.

You can hide mistakes and flaws, so it's not the end of the world but I did make a bunch of mistakes that made the process messy and time consuming.

First rule of magnetizing is to make a polarity stick.

Get a bit of sprue and fix a magnet to either end with opposite polarities and mark them (the classic red/blue works) and work out a scheme on how you plan to arrange the polarities. I use Red (danger) for weapons/arms and Blue for Body.

Anyone have a good easy recipe for Indian skin tones, specifically from the southern part of the subcontinent? I have seen that Goonhammer article but that's a lot of steps and I don't have all the right paints

Start with a dark brown base (Vallejo German Camo Black-Brown/Skavenblight Dinge/Gorthor Brown) and highlight up by mixing in some red/pink/yellow into it gradually. Don't just add white as you'll end up looking grey. Adjust the final result with washes - brown, sepia, purple, green, blue will all work. You could also use Ratling Grime or Garaghak Sewer Contrast as a base and highlight from there. You can get a vast array of different tones which will look good BUT skin tone wise I don't feel there's a huge difference between black and South Indian skin if you account for the individal colour variances.

This might be my best mini yet. This was a great guy to dip my toes into painting the eye, just one eye is fool-proof.

Next up is my Lord Solar conversion, I ended up not adding much detail to this guy. I wanted to give him a ton of medals, Zhukov style, but I couldn't make it work. I think the renaissance knight look suits him well enough.

What I need here is some help deciding how to paint him, specifically his horse's armour. My initial plan was to paint the barding brass, and the chainmail silver, like his armour, but I think that is just going to be too much brass. My worry is that if I paint it all silver/grey metal it will lose a lot of definition. Maybe silver base, and brass accents, keeping the chainmail darker than the rest? That should let the focus remain on the lord solar, without making the horse look like a giant mess of silver or brass. I might paint the horse black, I use black sparingly throughout the army, and I already have so much brown to paint with all the leather.

I'd super appreciate any thoughts on this. I think I have a solid plan, but don't feel 100% about it.

Also ugh, I can still see the "S" in the reins, I hope that is just because of how intense the lighting is, I couldn't see it before I took the picture...

add a touch of orange, ideally a really garish one, to one of your existing skin recipes. a tiny bit goes a long way.

i find it's the missing link for good-looking skintones that you don't want to look ruddy or jaundiced/zombified.

I don't know if there's a color convention for painting volkite weapons (like blue-white-ish is a convention for plasma) but I'm going with orange. I want to make things easily recognizable on the tabletop and I think orange looks cool :frogbon:

I should probably make an actual list so I have an idea of what I should paint rather than just doing things at random but whatever, I'll get there eventually. Also I need to paint some infantry and figure out how to make the different types distinguishable. So much to do.
