the fact that if the us buys a loitering munition it will cost 100x more than if China, Russia, Iran, etc bought it goes beyond the organizational threat to flyboys etc that these munitions pose. the cost is due to the fundamental rot at play in the american economic system.

if we want to buy a manned fighter jet, an unmanned fighter jet, a tank, a truck, a nuclear power plant or a concrete bridge over a creek, they're all going to cost 100x what it does in places not suffering from the same institutionalized grift. replacing the air force chiefs with droneboys instead of flyboys won't be able to change that.

they'll just buy more million dollar loitering munitions to replace the million dollar missiles

Yeah this was what I was getting at, obviously the Switchblade exists but it has the same capability as something a fraction of the price. Could the US MIC make something as cheap as a Lancet, or even cheaper like a commercial quad? Sure (lol) but if the Pentagon is writing blank checks anyway, why would they?

I'm curious in the context of like what a creative supply sgt could even do for "field expedient" stuff, are there even any commercial quadrotors with an NSN number?

Likely. Or the year of none, if the various peoples who are irreconcilable decide to get more angry about things and do what normally happens.

Cheaper and cheaper inland trade route via newly built railroads will make global trade shift from overwhelmingly sea trade back to a balanced sea/land trade network, which will shift and power from oceanic island countries back to continental countries. The development of cheaper anti-ship weapons will also facilitate this long trend.

Not trying to low ball the achievement of the Houthis, they still have tons of advanced weapons for a political group that aren't even considered a country.

watching a US ship sink without any (available) response might look pretty bad in an election year. If a Seychelles ship happened to sink in a possibly drone related incident who’s to say what happened or who is actually at fault.

How long does it take to sail around Africa anyway? There was an Israeli frigate on its way from a while back that I’m sure Ansar will be excited to greet

So from Google on container ship speeds today that go a little faster that means 12 to 15 ish days? Fast for trips back in the age of sail but that seems pretty significant in our much smaller world of faster expectations.

So those idf ships could’ve gotten there weeks ago. They might’ve joined operation shoot cheap drones with expensive missiles but doesn’t seem like they’ve tried anything aggressive

The Houthis only control about 1/3 of yemen's territory but it's the part where 80% of the country lives so for all practical purposes they are Yemen. Near as I can tell they haven't conquered the rest of the country simply on the basis of they don't really feel like it

look at what the countries are doing instead and you'll get your answer, france is instead just escorting french flagged vessels. I don't think this is as much "gently caress israel" as "protect my poo poo not someone else's"

Yeah, the US may have pushed things too far, they are clearly getting little to no support beyond I guess the UK's 1 destroyer (which honestly is all the Royal Navy can afford probably). The US has told its allies, "its our way or the highway" and this is the result.
