I miss Windows 7, used that right up until MS stopped supporting it. Absolutely nothing that's come in the later versions has improved my computing experience at all.

I was pretty happy with Win10 for a couple of years. Its still okay-ish if you actively hunt down and kill all of the news, notifications, and pop up ads but I shouldn't have to do that. If there was another option for an OS that didn't come caged in overpriced, proprietary hardware or require a CS degree to use, I'd be interested. In anti-enshittification news, this thread got me to finally switch out from chrome to firefox. I was worried about losing a bunch of cross-platform functionality but so far its been pretty seamless. Also, it seems to have fixed the issue I had scrolling this site on my phone. For some reason, SA would constantly hitch and fight me while scrolling down threads. It was only this site and it was on every phone I've used in the last several years. No idea why. Firefox doesn't do that so, uh, aces I guess

I forgot what it's called but there is some sort of patch out there that nukes everything shutty in wibdows 10 for you. It's a .bat so you can right click open it in a text editor to make sure nothing spooky is in there. Takes like 30 seconds to run and disables all that crap for you.

FWIW there probably are some easier linux distros nowadays. My guess is that OpenSUSE Tumbleweed or Fedora might be pretty reasonable even without using the command line, but I've never really tried either.

I have a whole folder of this junk so I don't have to track it down every time I reinstall: Not sure why nohboard is in there, I should add 7zip. I stuck with win7 until last year or so, until stuff was literally no longer working. "Upgrading" to windows 10 added literally nothing but hassle.

There was definitely a time when I could at least say there was 1 good OS, but those days were basically dead with the advent of Windows 8. Windows marketshare continues to slip and I'm wondering if there is anyone home upstairs to maybe put 1 and 1 together and recognize that annoying the ever living poo poo out of your customers and mass deleting features is maybe not a great long term business plan.

When my current smallest gets old enough, my plan is to bite the bullet and finally go full Linux gaming. I'd rather train him that "sometimes computer stuff is messy and doesn't work well and you have to check forums full of unhelpful people trying to help" than "your computer will relentlessly betray you to get you to read about Nazis and buy in-game money."

Playskool makes a little baby toy gear set that we've had years before for the older kids, they're so durable they live on forever at grandparents' houses for all the cousins to play with eventually. We had another baby this year so we bought a new one for for him, and it is a good 30% lighter, feels and looks flimsy, and didn't get any cheaper.

Linux is a fussy and absolutely horrible if you aren't a computer engineer who works in Linux all day. When it works it's fine when you actually have to fix poo poo or interact with it sucks. Macs don't like to communicate failures and works weirdly (differently than windows not necessarily bad or good but in a way I do not expect). Windows is built on the old and has multiple places to do the same thing but sometimes only one of those areas has the exact checkbox or whatever you need. IOS tries to pretend it isn't an OS so doesn't give or hides features it should have (like a file structure). Android seems to think I want to give access to everything to every app I download. Well at least the apps request it. Just because I didn't list a fault with the OS doesn't mean it doesn't exist I just didn't want to give everyone a novel to read. I worked for Apple during the time they decided to get rid of their "there are no viruses Mac" marketing on account of all the viruses people were gettibg. They tried to be like "oh it's not TECHNICALLY a virua it's malware" but thankfully that didn't last long. Just before that there was a huge rash of people's keychain (password storage) would randomly get corrupted. There are plenty of issues with every OS. It pisses me right off when people are like "Oh you wouldn't have thay issue if you used X ". Why are you Staning for a loving OS like loving sports team, I hate it.

Mobile OSes suck way, way more than desktop OSes, but they're nefarious because they hide it and most people don't know. Both Android and iOS, for example, make it impossible to software disable Bluetooth. Turning Bluetooth off disables normal user-facing Bluetooth functionality, but any software on your phone with certain permissions (varies by OS but sadly it's usually Location) can see the nearby Bluetooth devices AND be detected by nearby Bluetooth beacons while Bluetooth is ostensibly "off". There is no consumer benefit to this. There is zero argument for things to work this way that doesn't start and end at "gently caress you, consumer!". It can be and is used to track you down to the inch every loving day, and it's not even close to to worst they do. Motherfuckers need to go against the wall over it, I'm sick of how absolutely complacent people are about enshittification.

Yeah I absolutely believe that but I didn't want the crowd that knows Linux insisting it's fantastic and the best thing ever. My steam deck had a wonky install which was messing up installing the emulator thing I wanted. I wasted time trying to fix poo poo instead of just nuking and starting over which was in the end how I solved it. Also I recall the package manger or something having one of those stupid misspelled words names (like flickr) and so when I spelled the word correctly the command prompt was like lol no. But I'm averaging it out, and I assure you Jane in Accounting and Cindy the Teacher and Stan the Medical Assistant and so on and such across thousands of professions and custom software running on Windows....
