lets all burn piles of styrofoam to stick it to the man who is trying to force us to eat bugs and not have freedom

part of my existential crisis from this year was when we banned single use plastic bags here but replaced them with that plastic-based reusable type of bag that people buy anyway and i realized how hosed we were and how everything was a joke. it turned me into a complete lunatic for like a week and a half

I watched a summer bbq family get a ton of stuff ubered over (already a bit brain cracking) and then quickly toss all the "reusable" plastic nags in the trash lmao The best part is these new plastic bags seem every bit as frail and lovely as the old ones

the point of banning plastic bags is so they aren't in every tree, fence, ditch, and waterway

i am aware of that part. for me it's the fact that it's still plastic bags being manufactured and everyone goes "wow this is great for the environment" because we don't count the manufacturing and shipping of articles as part of the pollution we produce.

We banned styrofoam in seattle like 20 years ago and i honestly forget people still use that garbage a lot. Re: bags I started only using my own bags at the grocery store in like 2005 because it was more comfortable to carry my own totes on the bus and such and then we banned plastic bags here anyway. At the time whole foods or whatever had these great 99c bags that were recycled plastic but holy gently caress did they hold up. I only just this year had to throw away the first one i bought because it finally tore. Anyway you never see plastic bags in the environment here anymore. Nothing in the creek. Nothing in the gutters. Nothing at the beach. Ive got this one garbage neighbor who throws all his car trash into the bushes ala tonytone and even he cant hurt poo poo too much. Mostly ends up being paper coffee cups and some aluminum cans which are easy enough for a non poo poo human to clean up silicone thrills has issued a correction as of 18:53 on Dec 28, 2023 |

I went on vacation last month to countries that are much more clean. The first thing I noticed on the drive back from the airport was all of the plastic bags and other trash scattered about every fallow field I went past. lol lmao

It's just fertilizer.

I think what it comes down to is a plastic bag ban works if you are for real about it, not just going "it's ok so long as you make them 2-ply"

Thermometers ring, are you listening? In the lane, grass is glistening A beautiful sight We're happy tonight Walking in a winter wonderland Still around is the bluebird Here to stay is a new bird To sing a love song While we stroll along Walking in a winter wonderland In the meadow, we can build a sand castle We'll pretend that he is Parson Brown He'll say, are you married? We'll say, no man But you can do the job when you're in town Later on, we'll conspire As we dream by the AC To face unafraid The plans that we've made Walking in a winter wonderland

I refuse to believe that the solution to humans not putting garbage in the proper place is to remove garbage from the equation. People literally just need to pull up their pants and stop littering

kater posted:so what gets used for takeout instead of styrofoam? I assume it’s worse just as a matter of course. Seattle went to all compostable takeout containers like 5? years ago and some of it is literally just that formed cardboard stuff, chinese food take out boxes, some of it is that sort of bullshit "commercially compostable" coated stuff but we have full composting with all garbage service here so it makes a bit more sense. I actually throw most of it into my actual compost when I get take out containers and it works well enough. The weird corn plastic stuff has to go into the city compost though. The time between when we banned styrofoam 20 years ago to the compostable law though it was just mostly cardboard and plastic. the cardboard is fine. The plastics just got changed. silicone thrills has issued a correction as of 21:18 on Dec 28, 2023 |

the plastic bag ban worked really well in Hawaii too. like usual there were a bunch of insane hyperbolic doomsayers endlessly pontificating about how it was a mixture of dystopian authoritarianism and also a pointless waste of time, but in the end there is a very noticeable change to the quantity of trash pretty much everywhere. there’s still the problem of plastic beaches and the ocean is slowly gobbling up the shoreline as it rises steadily and all the coral and most endemic species are dead, but at least theres less of one particular type of trash.
