Hi there, this thread rules and here's a crosspost. About 15 years ago, my dad caught a slider turtle with hookless bait in the local lake and decided to take it home as a pet. She has become our family mascot, with free roam of the house during the day. Lately she's become much more social and my family has been learning things about her!CJacobs posted:Speedy, my pet turtle, is not trying to tell us to stop when we scratch her shell butt and she starts wigglin away. It turns out she actually really likes it, as tragically she has no way to itch her own rear end. I don't think even she knew we could do that for her. This is possibly the most satisfied little turtle ever? CJacobs posted:Thanks for the warm reception to my turtle Speedy. I learned another fact about her! CJacobs posted:Isn't it tho? That is a great idea. We also recently learned that it's not just fish and shrimp, she also loves GRUB TREAT

Everytime I see people skating, it makes me wish I could do it. They always look like they are having the best time.

I couldn't find the speedrunning thread if there is one, so I'll post this here. This kid is the first human to ever 'beat' (by playing until the point that it automatically overflows and crashes) Tetris on the NES: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9oVQ43j22g 40 minutes of insane reaction times and he must be 12 or something

funnily enough NES tetris is dominated by literal children because aside from the gameplay it's also physically demanding in a way that olds struggle to keep up with the problem is that holding down left or right in NES tetris doesn't move the pieces fast enough to keep up with the later drop speeds, so instead they have to rapidly press left or right as much as 20 times per second for almost the entire run recently a technique was found that makes it easier but it's still rough

Some people learn how to operate within restrictions, and take humanity to our physical pinnacle, to our greatness. Some people say gently caress you and become game designers. This is an ode to progress (and cheating)

I love ice skating, I used to go a couple times a week back in college and I got pretty decent at hockey skating around. Roller skating feels like a completely different beast though. I went once or twice after getting competent at ice skating, and couldn't do a thing except slowly roll around the rink. It felt like way more of a slower, deliberate workout compared to just being able to dash around wherever in ice skates. Also, crashing onto the wood floor feels way worse than falling on ice, where you just slide off much of the impact

Or, if you go during an open skate outside of school hours, you can just let the piles of kids cushion your falls

I often have dreams where I'm able to magically slide across the floor at high speeds. After a while I realised that that's basically what rollerskates is I keep meaning to get some. Though it's very hilly where I live, which would make going back up a hill again super annoying. I don't even know how people go uphill on rollerskates.

At least on inline skates (but it should be the same), as long as you have space for it, if you point your front feet out more and try to go wider to the left and right when you glide it makes it somewhat easier. Basically you're already doing a zigzag pattern when skating and if you make that wider, you can make the hill a little easier but slower. If you are new to it you probably should be more worried about going down the hills

I used to play roller hockey, and accordingly both own inline skates and know how to skate reasonably well. I don't think I've ever had more fun in my life than at the peak of the pandemic when there were almost literally no cars on the road, and I could just bomb through the city, weaving through whichever streets I felt like. It really helped keep me sane and relaxed in that time period, too, as I was cooped up in a small apartment alone. As bad as that time period was, I really miss doing that! I've periodically tried doing recreational skating since then but it just isn't the same.

If you guys like rollerskating so much go to your local roller derby team's bouts. Quad skating is still huge in that community.

We’ve been going to the local roller rink for some of our sons’ school fundraisers and stuff and there’s a group that does artistic skating lessons for adults that we now totally want to take. The only problem is they’re at like 7:30 AM on Sundays and other such bullshit times that are very hard to get to as parents.

I learned to rollerskate when I was maybe 7 years old, and I feel like that is absolutely the best time to learn. I spent a single afternoon getting decent at it and my 7 year old self was just fine after several hours of falling down in a wide variety of ways. Kids are made from rubber and are basically indestructible. A single one of those falls now would probably have me in hospital. Also it absolutely warms my heart to see all the late teen girls rollerskating around my town in the absolute pinnacle of bootskate technology - the simple white classic. I wanted them so much when I was a kid, but all the bootskates available then were like, Day-Glo or hot pink They are good too, but the snug white ones are so iconic.
