I own a Wilcox-Gay record cutter, and about 10 years ago i bought a ex-soviet stock cutting stylus for exactly such material to cut. I also have new piezo transducers to mount into the broken old crystal-type record cuttinghead.
It runs at 78rpm, so if you want to play the records on a modern-ish player, you gotta speed up your master of the music. Which is fine, i gotta gently caress around with that anyway because the motor is meant for 60Hz and i live in a 50Hz country. Stylus width is also an issue, but most of my portable record players have a flippable microgroove and normal groove stylus anyway. For my AT95 cartridge in the Good Turntable, the bigger stylus is also available but eh, the Wilcox-Gay is never gonna even come close to approaching hifi sound with its crystal or piezo cutting head.

I lost the stylus. Can't find it anymore. I was devastated, because it was like 15 euro while in the western world, such a thing costs about 100 euro or more, if it's available at all. Obviously buying any ex-soviet stuff has become very hard.

The whole project has come to a standstill, too much poo poo to do, and i need to do some modifications to the cutting head to fit the new piezos.

Hi everyone, happy new year and all that.

I've got a new find for you. I don't know how it's done in other countries but here in Australia we have something called a 'tip shop'. Imagine a thrift store but where everything is covered in more grime than usual. It's where rubbish dumps try to sell off anything salvageable before it goes in landfill. Most of the time, it's literal garbage but every now and then you find something that's just too cool to be allowed to go in landfill:

The Compaq Portable III, a 286-based luggable from 1987. This particular one is missing the floppy drive and hard drive that would have originally been installed, the sheath for the keyboard cable has completely rotted away, and it smells of what I'm hoping is just urine and not blown RIFA caps.

I haven't been brave enough to try powering it up just yet, I'd like to properly test the power supply before I even think of firing it up, but I have been giving it a good thorough clean and it seems to be coming up nicely. Under all the grime it's cosmetically in good condition, so even if I never fully restore it, it will make a nice display piece.

I googled something looking for a straightforward yes or no answer the other day and decided to click on one of the suggested queries which was almost verbatim “is this yes or no”.

The result said “No,” and then an entire paragraph explaining that the answer was actually yes. 10/10 no notes.

I had the 386 version of this many years ago - a nice machine, and the display is very bright and sharp, and looks great (especially if you can find anything that supports the 640x400 enhanced CGA mode). But it was from the era of not-quite-PC-compatibles and a whole lot of stuff just wouldn't run on it at all.

I hear Windows 2.1 supported the high res not-CGA mode, so that might be worth a try once I get it up and running. I’m pretty sure Winworldpc has the OEM DOS disks, and apparently HP still has the diagnostic disks for download.

Do not randomly start swapping out capacitors. If it works and doesn't show explicit symptoms of something being wrong, don't start loving around with it.
There's no need for it, in portable radios a failing electrolytic generally doesn't cause damage to other components. You'll notice when they go bad - because of oscillations, a lack of audio gain, a lack of bass response etc.

There's a name for people recapping stuff because some guy on a forum said it - kapotrepareren, which roughly translates to 'repair it until it's broken'. That often happens because unexperienced people try a cargo-cult like fix by swapping all capacitors. Sometimes by the wrong ones, sometimes by damaging the circuit board (lifting traces due to the absence of a real desoldering station, older boards are pretty vulnerable to that), sometimes by solder skills that are less good than that of the factories, and sometimes because plastic components have become brittle and might snap when disturbed.

If you want to do ensure it's in proper condition, grab a modulated signal generator from Aliexpress or your nearest hamfest and check if it corresponds to factory specifications. Replacing electrolytics doesn't do anything about someone having hosed around with the RF or IF alignment, silver ceramic trimmers having oxidized (probably not the case in your radio but it does happen in some sets) etc etc.

It is true that electrolytics are a common failure point, but if you really want to make sure they're doing well, get one of those cheap component testers, desolder a small sample of them, and check if they meet specifications.

Finally, make sure that the balls of aluminium foil don't start shorting out against each other. Alkaline batteries won't catch fire, but they definitely can vent their electrolyte when short circuited for long enough. If they ever do, clean up with vinegar.

You can buy prison electronics new on Amazon.

However they are usually pretty small and have most of the features like extra inputs removed.

They also are massively overpriced which I'm guessing is due to a combination of smaller production runs, a captive market and some requirements that I assume are DOC mandated.

For example you don't want someone to be able to break the case on their clear TV so they can hide drugs inside without breaking the seals. You also don't want them to break off a piece and make a clear shiv.

So while it looks just like any other clear plastic cased device from the 80s or 90s, the TV case is actually lexan polycarbonate rather than cheap plastic so I assume that's a large factor in the price.

This prison supply site goes into all the features that got stripped and has a bunch of other current production prison electronics for sale.

https://www.icswaco.com/RCA-SECUREVIEW-CLEAR-LED-TELEVISION?quantity=1&custcol82=2&custcol83=1

One thing to note about prison electronics is some of it has no external speaker or the external speaker disconnected so the inmates would have to listen through headphones which is kind of a drawback. In the case of my 13-in tube TV, it has an external speaker that cuts off when the headphone jack is in use. But I'm assuming the prior owner used headphones on it daily so the jack solder joint to the board is loose so you have to jiggle the jack to get headphones or the external speaker to work correctly. It's a pretty easy repair to go in and resolder the board but I have to cut all the department of correction seals to get in there so I haven't gotten around to it.

They look like they are the tamper evident seals like you used to see on computer cases. Even heating them with a heat gun when you try to peel them off the parts of the foil separate and show void or something similar showing the seal was peeled.

I'm not afraid of any legal ramifications of removing the seals but rather the collector/coolness factor of a prison TV is that it has the seals. And like most projects I need to get around to :effort:

I think the best way to open it up will just be to carefully slit the seals with a fresh razor blade so they look as intact as possible from a few feet away. If I decide to sell it someday the sound not working is probably a bigger ding on the value compared to carefully slit seals and a fully functional TV.

I have no idea, hopefully a corrections officer goon is lurking and can shed some light on why they are spec'ed that way.

I know techmoan did a video about prison tech that also touches on how prisons were selling albums on clear cassette tapes up until at least 2013 based on the Kanye album on cassette he acquired.

Edit: According to this article and some other Google results at least some jails and prisons do not let the inmates have clocks so they have to ask a guard for the time. So that explains why the TV has the clock function removed but aside from people claiming it's to psychologically torture the inmates on quora I'm not sure what the actual reason the prison restricts access to clocks is.

Someone with a TV would be able to switch to news or weather and look at the time there, or go by what programming was on. Maybe it's just "we've always had a no clock rule" and the people running the prisons have forgotten the reason to? Not allowing them makes sense if it's the year 1900 and a typical desk clock can be a lethal bludgeon.
