imo it's not straightforward to make these comparisons imo because ireland was outright colonised in a way which norway mostly wasn't - there's no norwegian equivalent to the plantation system, e.g., and there weren't any widespread clearances or active suppression of the local language except at the very elite levels. perhaps a better comparison might be finland or scotland, but those also aren't perfect matches by any means

Scotland would be the most direct parallel I think, yeah. Unfortunately this also includes a decent chunk of people who think they were victims of their "colonial oppressor" in the same manner as Ireland, which is just grotesque, at least enough that I've had it be brought up unprompted (apart from it being the 17th of May) on two different occasions by entirely unrelated Norwegians. I get from your posting that you've probably had run-ins with their Danish opposites, so I can understand why you're reacting like you are to my, admittedly, overly strong and somewhat inflammatory position.

As a native speaker who didn't get any Danish schooling, my partner constantly edits out my commas. Don't know what the grammar rules are but I don't think we're supposed to deploy them so liberally?

We've had two grammar/comma reforms in the last 30 years. Your partner seems to be adhering to the 90s kid rules, which is of course the correct ones.

I went to sprogskole ten years ago, and we were taught that every clause and subordinate clause gets separated by a comma. Basically, every verb gets its own comma or period. So, it's not "I think it's going to snow", it's "I think, it's going to snow".

Compared to some other languages, it is an easy rule to follow when writing. It just makes reading quite a chore when a sentence gets a bit long and complicated.
