Everyone who has ever gone all-in on Trump has ended up either disgraced, disbarred, or in prison, but let’s see how this works out for Elise Stefanik! I’m sure the entire Republican apparatus deciding to play “will they/won’t they” with accepting the election results is going to go great.

I came back to SA on Jan 6th after not reading the forums for a few years, because I was scouring the internet for information on what was going on. I thought the forums had more trump supporters because I had seen the "trumps fine" thread a while back (which helped me stay away). Was really glad to learn I was wrong, or that they had left/gotten banned or whatever, I didn't even know about jeffrey taking over yet, and I've been here ever since because of the wild ride and because goons are the best people to ride with. Pot Smoke Phoenix posted:It's really weird. Not even. The Bush/McCain/Romney Republican Party is dead. Their only chance at winning anymore is Trump. It’s 100% cult of personality, after him there is no successor. There’s a chunk of voters who used to vote Republican who don’t anymore after Trump. There’s a chunk of voters that only vote when Trump is on the ballot. When Trump’s on the ballot, they get 2020. When Trump’s not on the ballot, they get 2022 and 2023. It’s a real no-win situation, made worse by the fact that they offer nothing to young people (now meaning, like, under 40), so every year it gets worse and worse as more Boomers and older die off. Their only strat now is getting non-Republican voters to stay home or vote third party. That’s why there’s this effort to convince everyone that Biden is just as corrupt and self-dealing as Trump, and why there’s more third party candidates running than ever (RFK, Green, plus No Labels). It’s an all-out smash and grab at this point. It sucks that Biden has real vulnerabilities, too (age, I/P, inflation (prices will not go down even though inflation has slowed down)).

I don't see how a republican house is ever going to confirm the EC results for a democratic president ever again, if there's a split between the two in a presidential election cycle. This reminds me about how before the seige started on 1/6, a bunch of congresspeople were trying to contest the results. Then that night, after they got back into the chambers and resumed the process, no one said poo poo. The mob had scared them and made them shut up and do their jobs. But a lot of those same people repeat the lies about the election now, so I have no faith that these cowards won't try to gently caress with the result again. Were there any new rules put into place since 2021 to try and prevent fuckery this time around?

Yeah the new congress is seated first, then the confirmation of EC votes happens. Presumably there's some threshold of crazies in the house and senate you'd need to do it. If the GOP has enough margin of nutjobs in the house to do it, it seems unlikely you'd have a democratic president at the same time. But honestly, we've got way too many situations counting on the of moderate GOP senators and representatives to keep basic democracy functioning these days. Every year there's less of them and every year the 'moderates' are pushed to do crazier poo poo, like say vote for loving Mike Johnson as speaker even though he's a total election-denying loon.
