You can do both, but you have to put priority on the whole "coherent and entertaining movie" part. Another great example is how the newest Mortal Kombat movie ends with them preparing for the actual Mortal Kombat tournament. The whole movie is Shang Tsung trying to cheat and kill people before the actual tournament. AceOfFlames fucked around with this message at 15:18 on Jan 9, 2024 |

Fast X was also annoying because it's clearly "part 1" without any branding as such. Nothing's really resolved and it ends on a big cliffhanger.

Casino Royale was the only movie that did it well, with Bond "earning" the Bond theme and saying "Bond, James Bond" at the end of the movie. Since then, it's just been overdone. Just show me a run of the mill adventure from in medias res! Not everything has to be an origin story! And on that note: Stop the reboots! Just cast a new actor and pretend nothing's changed! Going from Alec Baldwin to Harrison Ford didn't require a Jack Ryan reboot, so why have we had three reboots and origin stories since then, every time there's a new actor?

mutantIke posted:That's really just an obsession of Paul W.S. Anderson's. He's been doing it since his first Resident Evil movie, the man loves a stinger I mean, a stinger can be fine, but you have to have resolved enough in your own movie to make it feel earned. I’m fine with the ending of the first Resident Evil movie because enough was resolved. We know who Alice is, she regains her memory. We know what she was doing trying to be a whistleblower about what Umbrella was working on. We know who set the virus in motion and we get his satisfying end. The major plot threads introduced in the movie were resolved throughout the movie so the fact that it leans in to a sequel at the end isn’t as egregious. With Monster Hunter, the whole plot of the movie is trying to get home, she does, but then goes back because monsters are a threat. They engage with a dragon. Boom, end credits. Mid fight. We don’t really learn anything about this new world, why things seem to be getting worse about stuff crossing between worlds, really anything about the Sky Tower (and the hooded figure at the end). We don’t even get to see the outcome of their fight with the dragon. We didn’t learn anything really about the world. The characters didn’t undergo any sort of growth arc. It was half survival movie, then exposition dump that really doesn’t even tell us all that much, then the movie ends like they ran out of budget.

Casino Royale is my favorite Bond movie, and it kind of pulls the same thing, but it never bothered me. I think it's because it still feels like a complete movie. We still get to see a great spy movie, and don't feel cheated. It's not all just Bond building his tropes (though there's definitely some of that happening) just to finally get to the movie we wanted at the end. We get the movie, and then the reveal that he's finally who we knew him to be in the other movies. Though to be fair, it helps that it's based on the actual first Bond movie, so it already was an origin story with a complete story. The trope building feels more like the references in Iron Man. They're there (like the "Shaken or stirred?", "Does it look like I give a drat?" thing, or wearing the tux to play the part), but they're references instead of it being what the movie is constantly working towards. And that ending really is amazing. poo poo, now I've gotta go watch it again. thrawn527 fucked around with this message at 20:09 on Jan 8, 2024 |

I think it has one of the best cold opens too. The action is in flashback and stays just long enough to show the brutality of the fight. Otherwise it’s cool, collected Bond who has the situation fully under control from the start. The slow realization on Dryden’s face that he’s going to be the second kill. “Yes, Considerably.”

Casino Royale owns yeah. Easily my personal favourite Bond, although it’s not a franchise I really have any attachment to.

With Casino, it's not about him becoming Bond the superspy at all, it's about him becoming Bond the cold-hearted bastard. He starts the movie with all the skills and abilities he needs, and uses them in various superspy scenarios throughout the film. The origin story is the origin of his personality through seeing him fall for and lose Vesper. None of these other examples does the same thing. Batman Begins touches on that same sort of arc (but backwards), but still has us go through training montages and building the suit and whatever.

One part that always stands out to me in Casino Royale (a movie I love, yeah) is during the chase at the start of the film when they move through the construction site and the one worker there apparently figures some dude running through the site is a bad enough infraction that he's gotta swing a blowtorch at him in an effort to maim or possibly kill him

The thing I like most about Casino Royale is actually that it's about a pretty normal crime. It's just a bit of insider trading and terror financing. No world ending virus, no earth quake lasers or satellites. Just a guy who needs/wants to give $100 million to a warlord. The same thing was great about Quantum of Solace. It's just resource theft, a normal crime that takes place in the global south every day. And it's not about Bond. They could have sent anyone. But then they had to go back to the hostage the world poo poo because I guess showing capitalism to be bad doesn't actually fit with the ideology of the Bond series, and everything that ever happens is because there is some personal connection to Bond. The guy attracts terrorist attacks like nothing else by the time Skyfall's over.

I watched GoldenEye recently and I think the N64 version is the better one. Not sure I'm a completely fair judge because most of it felt like watching a weird adaption of the game levels even though it's obviously the other way round, but the movie felt kind of boring when you aren't given something to do for the cutscenes.

Good point. I did not replay the game to compare and in general I ignore FPS as a genre because they all kinda feel like GoldenEye again but fancier. Having only one control stick alone would be a huge problem if I actually revisited.

And 35 years ago poo poo looked like Wolfenstein, 5 years is a wild amount of time in video game development. You add about 5 years of development to Dark Souls and you get loving Elden Ring. I personally wouldn't want to go back and gently caress with Goldeneye, but it doesn't change that it was legitimately great when it came out.

I don't think there's really that much distance between Dark Souls and Elden Ring.

I've decided, based on nothing but a sheer suspicion of the wider world and a hardy love of undergraduate statistics, that test screening audiences are boring motherfuckers whose main job is to launder producer directives.

Gripweed posted:I didn’t think the Batman was bloated. I’m sure it could’ve been edited a bit tighter but it never really felt like it was dragging or meandering. I like The Batman. A lot. But I get thinking it's bloated, mostly because of the ending. The Riddler is arrested, Batman has his final scene with him in Arkham, and the movie kind of feels done, but there's another, what, 30 minutes left? And it's mostly just Batman fighting random assholes from the internet in the stadium. It feels a bit tacked on, even if I like what they actually do there (Batman going from being Vengeance Itself to the Protector of Gotham). I think if things were rearranged a bit, it would have helped get over the feeling of, "I thought we were done?" That can leave a bad taste in your mouth when you leave the theater that taints the rest of the movie.

The car chase to get The Penguin was one of the dumbest things I’ve seen put on the big screen, especially for a movie that’s praised as high as “The Batman.” Batman causes how many deaths on the highway doing a high speed chase simply because he thinks The Penguin is the informant, only to find out that he isn’t. 1) The carnage level on the highway should have Batman branded as the villain. It causes more death and destruction than Danny DeVito did in “Batman Returns” when he straight up hijacks Batman’s car. I don’t even get the sense that they were trying to make any sort of statement with it either, it’s just treated as an action sequence. 2) Batman is chasing after him basically on a hunch. 3) They catch him and are like “this princess is in another castle” stuff about him being the informant, but they should still have him on major drug charges, but Batman just kinda leaves (I think, it’s been awhile since I watched it.) 4) This whole drat frantic chase was unnecessary anyways. The Penguin is a known figure with known hangouts and there was no indication that he was going to run and go to ground. Batman didn’t have to chase him. He could have picked him up at any time. Not denying that the new Batmobile is cool and it should have a scene in the movie, but they could have excised that whole section with ZERO effect on the overall plot of the movie.

The worst thing is that a chase between the penguin and the batmobile should be over in like 5 seconds. You mean the multi-billion dollar war machine can’t outrun a normal car?
