It's always the second Sunday of the month, so if the month starts on a Monday (which it did), it's the longest wait for the basho to start.

Kirishima has the Yoko run and Koto and Daiwsho are on longshot Ozeki runs so the always root for the run rule applies.

I really like Atamifuji and Gonoyama, but first time in joi scares me so we'll go with the vet that's done it before.

Meh as always on the M6-10 crowd.

The M11+ block is always a fun mix. Onosato the super prospect is fun to cheer for. Oho might be at the level he belongs as he hasn't lived up to the hype, but seems like he could stick around the lower ranks. Tomokaze is a good comeback story to root for.

Juryo - let's roll with the kids. Kitanowaka struggled his first shot in the bigs but let's see if he can bounce back after getting a taste. Shirokuma and Takerufuji haven't had losing records yet in their career.

Very pleased to see my large son AOIYAMA back up from Juryo, so I have to pick him. Feels like a lot of the most exciting new blood is in Juryo atm just waiting to break into the top flight, so it's a good basho to start paying more attention down there.

Ben Nerevarine

Random thoughts:

Kirishima's got the momentum. I have Teru second because I think this is his last basho regardless of the outcome so I see him going all out to win, like a demon, grinding his knees into a fine paste if necessary. Certainly nothing on the level of Hakuho's last 15-0 but like 12-3, let's say. I really wanted to squeeze Hoshoryu into my Y/O but I just can't give up on Takakeisho, even if I do think his Yokozuna dream recedes further and further into the distance with each basho.

Kotonowaka also has the juice now. I love my boy Ura--realistically I think he's likely to pull even or worse given that this is the highest he's ever been, but I'll always root for the guy.

Atamifuji's gone so high so fast that I think for him it's going to be all about the mental game. He's a babe in the woods, and his worst enemy is himself. If he can summon his own personal demon, I think he's a lock for sanyaku sooner rather than later.

I didn't really want to have Hokuseiho in my M6-10 picks, he's disappointed me too many times now, but it's kind of the same story for him except with technique: if he can find it within himself to do more than lean against his oppenent for 4 minutes at a stretch, I think he's still got potential to go higher.

M11+ is a mess for me, I'm really just rolling the dice. I want to believe Aoiyama isn't on the long slide to retirement.

Juryo-wise, Kotoeko to me is the archetypal low makuuchi salaryman, consistently floating around in the ~M10 range. I think he just had a poor outing this last basho, so I think he'll pull himself back up fairly easily.

I always find the M11 group a mess in a fun way. It's a mix of kids on the way up who may or may not be ready, old dudes trending downwards seeing if they have one last shot, injured dudes who may or may not be recovered, etc. Just seems like chaos where everyone is just passing through one way or another.

  • Y/O: If this is going to be Terunofuji's last basho(which I think it may well be), I think he's going to do his best to make it a good one. That aside, I have no faith in Takakeisho's ability to remain healthy.
  • S/K: Boring rank bracket this time around, imo. I think Ura's gonna bounce off the komusubi wall, and there's only three other options.
  • 1-5: Good mix of new guys and old talent. IMO anybody here has the potential to pop off and hit double digits.
  • 6-10: Boring imo. Just nobody here particularly interesting.
  • 11+: Always an interesting bracket because it always has new guys and because of the potential for experienced guys who've fallen down the charts to pop off against bottom rankers.
  • Juryo: No loving clue here, gonna be interesting.

Yeah, that's my feeling on him too. If he's healthy enough, he's going to be looking to either make a dominant return to prove he's still got the goods, or make one last stand to go out with a winning record.
