i think Whitney has always been skirting around the topic of divorce and whether they'll stay together; she refused to rule it out in the talking head interviews, when Dougie asked her directly. ("next question").

I think my takeaway from that scene was that it hadn't even occurred to her as a thing until he asked the question. I think she's begun to realize what a terrible person Asher is, and was pretty upset by that casino video.

gurragadon posted:

I think Whitney had convinced herself over the filming and watching the edited shows that she wanted a divorce. The potter cut was pretty rough on Asher. I think it also hurt her ego some because she can't just be the Green Queen without her Jester, she needs "someone" there, but she's stuck with Asher who she has grown to dislike.

I agree, but the reveal of that cut was later in the episode. I guess I can see how the show is sort of building to a breakup, but it all read to me as the stress and friction that comes from putting all of your dreams and efforts into one shaky project (that doesn't seem to be going particularly well). That is, until the scene with Dougie where she gets mad that it's off the table.

Thanks for the Happiness recommendation, thread. I loved Welcome to the Dollhouse back in the day and I didn't realize that it was the same director.

10/10, still slightly dissociating.

I take both this show and Good Time as a type of comedy that's not necessarily intended to be laughed at. In both cases it's amusing just how much the protagonists are failing at things and hoisting themselves by their own petards and digging themselves into ever-deeper holes. It's amusing in the same sense that schadenfreude is amusing, you're seeing lovely people get their comeuppance for being in over their heads and earnestly trying to do something that they're not at all emotionally or intellectually equipped to do. It's comedy in the same sense as typing "lol" at a post that amused you, as opposed to literally laughing out loud.

It's kind of similar to Patriot though that leaned slightly further into literal funny-comedy - things get progressively worse and more tense for the protagonist in a comedically-escalating way despite never or rarely having "jokes", it's 'funny' in the sense that it keeps one-upping itself in just how atrocious it gets. Just when you think things can't possibly get any worse, they do, usually in an unexpected way.

I agree with all of this.

Patriot is so loving good man. It was done very dirty by both the name (which is on the other hand a great name especially in the greek origin sense of of one's father) and being in the dregs of Amazon Prime with no marketing. Perfect show.

I loved that so much. That was incredible. None of the elements of tension that have been ratcheting up for nine episodes ended up amounting to anything. Even their relationship seemed to be improved. Was this then some kind of cosmic consequence for their shittery in service of an audience that desperately expected them to be punished? Like is this Fielder and Safdie saying "here is what you want to see, in a manner of speaking anyway"?

What a loving series. A goddamned masterpiece

It’s pretty funny so many people came up with these intricate theories and were acting like Asher trying to figure out who put the chicken in the bathroom, only for the show to just be like “nah”.

I thought it was hysterical but I do have to agree with Sepinwall that it just feels like a big non sequitur for the sake of it. I wildly disagree with his take on The Rehearsal’s ending but we don’t need to relitigate that.

Also, re: the finale — the episode with the most explicit horror premise is somehow nowhere near as anxiety inducing as a bunch of the much more mundane/grounded scenes that preceded it, and it might have been the straight-up funniest episode of the show. Fun dynamic imo

There were definitely more obvious jokes in this episode than most of the last few episodes. For how strange it was, I didn't understand how it served the plot while watching it. The reddit post that was linked above probably got it though. The biggest theme of the whole show was trying to "help" people in ways that don't help them or actively hurt them. It happens over and over throughout. I don't know about the cultural statement on it, but showing asher in need of help and the help others give him only making things worse and worse totally lines up with the theme.

I'm the kind of person that likes consistency with things either being grounded in reality or surreal/fantastic. So I think it's poor form to take a story that's been realistic (more or less) and then use something very unrealistic to make a point.
