loving wild is an understatement. imprint remains my most extreme viewing experience. i watched it with friends, no pauses, blitzed out of our gourds and by the end we were begging for the characters to finally die so the misery and torture porn could end. the opening hooks you in with surprisingly compelling acting from billy drago, really engages you emotionally and then the loving needles come out

it's kind of wild that nic pizzalotta got caught plagiarizing everything that made true detective season 1 great and it had absolutely no impact on his career

I dunno, having Vince Vaughn show up in his creative work immediately after has me wondering if curses from comic book wizards might be actually real.

I think Masters of Horror is a solid watch for horror fans, but in addition to factoring in the limits of being a cable TV show at the time, it's absolutely worth noting that the quality varies WILDLY. Horror is my favorite film genre and I almost gave up on the show four episodes in because it seemed like a downhill slide. I actually HATE the episode "Jenifer" with a passion, that was nearly the breaking point. (Not teasing the poster who mentioned it before, because the episode is spoken of highly and comes up high on rankings of all the episodes. It's just baffling to me.)

The series picks up after that, and a lot of my favorite episodes are in the back half of season one. It's an anthology, so you can skip around freely. It's fine to start with episodes by directors/actors you like, etc. My personal favorites (in order of series appearance) are:
-Cigarette Burns (John Carpenter)
-Sick Girl (Lucky McKee and Angela Bettis of May together again, probably my overall fave)
-Pick Me Up (Larry Cohen)
-Imprint (Takashi Miike, the episode Showtime refused to air)

Totally understand your feelings on "Jennifer" I admittedly haven't seen it since it hit DVD and I was still a pretty firm apologist for Argento at that point so my feelings about it now are likely different.

Screwfly stuck with me for how it manages to botch a great concept. Sick Girl is pretty fun and feels very in-line with his previous film "May" which rules.

I watched all of Masters of Horror at the time, including ordering the Takashi Miike episode on DVD since Showtime wouldn’t air it, and it’s mostly bad. Much of it is forgettable, Cigarette Burns sticks out for being really good (though still derivative of Polanski’s The Ninth Gate starring Johnny Depp :yikeseroo:), and then poo poo like Pelts and Dream Cruise stick out for being really, really bad.

I also remember thinking Showtime refused to air Imprint (the Takashi Miike episode) not due to anything extreme, but because it was just bad and not very well edited. I bought that DVD expecting something crazy and it was more of a mess.

I think the existence of two seasons of Masters of Horror disproves Showtime would ever withhold anything for being bad and poorly edited.

Fair.

Also just  that after Showtime pulled the plug on Masters of Horror, NBC basically revived it as Fear Itself for broadcast TV. I watched the one Eater episode and nothing else. And people say that was the best one.

Was Jennifer the one with the girl with the monster face? All I remember of it was the part where the creepy orderly guys were watching her getting scrubbed down in a sanitarium shower while lamenting that it was a shame her face was so hosed up since her body was so hot.

Master of Horror was a really horny show. See the episode Deer Woman which had a native-american model who didn't have a single line of dialogue but you can sure bet she took her shirt off.

Yep.

Then again, those were the same orderlies that let a detective who has no familial or personal relationship or legal authority over an adult mental patient whatsoever check her out of the psych ward and take her to live with him.

Earlier I was talking to a friend about how much I’m enjoying the new season of Fargo, but I just watched Miller’s Crossing yesterday for the first time since I was 20, and there’s just nothing close to the same level of quality and purity of statement.

Best not to compare the show and the movies imo. I think Fargo the show only aspires to be a collection of (generally) well told stories by a mega fan of the Coens, and he peppers visual references throughout that are just member berries. Danish Graves has an eyepatch that looks like John Goodman’s in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou; the reference is meaningless to the plot, but it did made me think of a movie I like, and that made me feel good. The more you make me think about it, the weirder it is that Fargo got made and has lasted this long, when it’s basically a giant bag of really specific film references and style impressions.

Yeah Noah Hawley has some really good storytelling abilities but it’s still not anywhere near as rich as the Coen films. The one I come back to is comparing Chirguh to the various killing machines in the show (Malcolm, Hanzee, Munch) and how the show just seems to make them supernatural whereas Chirguh was terrifying but fully believable. Maybe that is also a testament to McCarthy, but I haven’t read the book.

I hadn’t realized the Danish eyepatch was a John Goodman reference but that definitely tracks with the same shape and colour etc.

It was on Showtime in the 00's, so really horny was just the style at the time. That was basically the selling point of the movie channel original TV programs: "Look we can have nudity and swearing and gore".

They had a show called Red Shoe Diaries which was just an excuse to have famous actresses on the downside of their career do softcore. I specifically remember watching an episode because Ally Sheedy was in it. She played a woman who liked to wear wigs while having sex with her husband. She did not do any nudity. The plot of the ep had to do with their maid wearing her wigs and the husband mistaking her for Ally Sheedy and accidentally banging the wrong lady. The 90s were pretty hosed up.

David Duchovny was the Red Shoe Diaries equivalent of the crypt keeper. Except he was a sad guy who read people’s letters at the beginning and end of every episode, not a cackling corpse who made puns.

:thunk:

I think having the actual crypt keeper doing the Red Shoe intros/outros would’ve been an improvement.
