Oh wow, Moonscars had the absolute worst tutorial ever to indicate wall jumping is a thing in it. Three X symbols in a row, with literally no other prompts, just made me think I was loving up double jumping somehow, for entirely too long. I probably would have figured it out sooner if it had just...not prompted me at all. Just...drat, that was bad.

So for the last year I've been playing this Konami Picross game. You get four available games to play at once -- three regular ones and one BOSS one. I've just been doing the regular ones, always leaving the BOSS one empty, because I figure, I'll save that for last. Well, I've finally completed all the non-BOSS puzzles, and I thought, now's the time to hit the really hard ones.

These loving BOSS puzzles have a timer! After you beat a BOSS puzzle you have to wait ten minutes before you can start another -- and that's ten minutes while the loving app is running! There are like 300 puzzles left in this game, but I've clearly been playing this wrong this entire time. I'll never be able to finish it now :(

edit: I GUESS you're meant to play a BOSS! puzzle, then while the timer resets you play a regular one. Nowhere was this indicated

I've been doing it loving backwards

Also: Against the Storm's obnoxious RNG.

Unfortunately I recently hit level 8, which means like 8 more buildings I may or may not ever use are added to my list, of which I may only choose 3. Currently my colony is starving. In the beginning this was an easy solution because of my small selection, three were food producing buildings. But now that I'm level 8, only 7 of 90 buildings are food producing*, which means my colony is way more likely to starve because of RNG bullshit. I feel like this is what the game interprets as "the game gets harder as you level up"

*admittedly, these numbers are made up and probably exaggerated; I don 't know the specific values but they're something like that!

I think it’s been said, but god the battle system in Paper Mario: The Origami King is just not great. Every battle is a simple puzzle where the goal is to arrange enemies to set them up in lines or squares so your jump/hammer can kill them in few enough actions to defeat them before they get a turn. It was definitely a mistake booting this up after SMBRPG, it makes the flaws stand out even more.

Just 100%ed Super Mario Wonder. Lovely game overall, but that super secret badge-based final level is just like... come on, Nintendo. Come oonnn. You know this sucks. There's no way you don't know this sucks.

To be fair, most of the badge segments are a good fun challenge. It's just that the spring badge and invisible badge segments are so staggeringly awful that they drag the whole thing down to 'sucks'

If you must blink, do it now.
Soma is a pretty neat horror game with some serious existential dread going on, I can dig it, but I'd dig it a bit more if they pruned some of these monster encounters and bulked up the remainder. I know there's safe mode but honestly I feel like there's a happy medium they missed where there's less monster stuff but the monster stuff is better.

The first robot is fine, though it feels like a tutorial encounter. I wouldn't really change it for that reason. Akers and crew are decently built-up, and probably the best creature features on offer. I wouldn't expand their section beyond what it is, but I half-expected Akers to show up again later and he doesn't; would've made a slightly more fitting capstone before heading into the abyss, I think.

None of the underwater fish monsters did much for me, I didn't even notice or run into most of them until looking up the game's bestiary after the fact. The robot people (the girl in Omnicron, corridor Jin) weren't a bad idea, but they kinda show up unceremoniously and then go away while Johan, a more compelling design and presence, kinda steals their creepy thunder. You don't fight him and I don't mind that, but I think I would have liked him to have been foreshadowed a little sooner and integrated a little more seamlessly. Killer design though.

The guy in the ship you kills you if you look at him, but you need to look around to know where he is, is the worst, and was painfully slow when not teleporting behind me. I might've just missed the alternate paths, but the ship seemed to have a lot of bottlenecks and geography to get caught on. I was decently spooked by the rest of the game, but this was the one bit where I felt kinda frustrated.

But man, that story, the setting, the atmosphere. Definitely a great horror game, though less for the minute-to-minute scares and more for the sheer bleakness of what all's gone down, and the creeping implications of half the stuff you see.

Super Mario Wonder is great but I hate the special world autoscroller levels. All three of them are beyond my ability, so getting 100% is pretty much out of the question, though it might help if the controller design didn't murder my hand after multiple attempts.

Tablet/PSP-style. I have a TV but can't really hook it up, so I've just been using it like a handheld. Might be worth trying with the controller-add-on in the future if I can connect it, though autoscrollers are the sort of thing I don't really enjoy even when I'm not bad at them, so it's not high on my priorities list.

I only picked up a Switch recently, so maybe I just need to get used to it.

Well, Celestial weapons ignore enemy defense, which is an ability that you can't customize yourself and doesn't use a slot, so there's that. Their only real flaw (other than the inane way in which you unlock most of them) is that their damage depends on your current HP / MP.

FFVII Crisis Core Reunion has much improved graphics over the original PSP release. This is most obvious in the new character models, many of which I'd imagine are straight from FFVIIR, and things like really nice looking reflections, shading, hi-res textures etc.
However, like in many ports, the CG cutscenes are still like 360p and crunchy as poo poo - this isn't specifically my complaint though, since I'm pretty much always expecting that when it comes to old games getting ported... What I definitely didn't expect is that there are also cutscenes that used to be CG, were then completely redone with the new models and shading and all that good stuff, and then... compressed to hell so they wouldn't stand out amongst the other terrible looking CG cutscenes(?). At least that's the only halfway reasonable explanation I have, it could also be that those specific cutscenes also have tiny bits of old CG in them in which case yeah, it would all have to look just as bad. Just feels like a baffling thing to see.

RE4 Remake:

Incendiary grenades are gone, Leon doesn't do a jump kick to escape grapples and have a 70% chance of kicking someone's head off anymore, and the Fangs/Colmillos/wolves are the absolute worst enemy to fight as a weak console player, personally.

Best way to fight wolves is to save shotgun for them and stab them while they are down. Flash grenades also work.

Yeah that works when there's enough on hand to make use of it. :v:

Sadly RE4 isn't so exploitable that you can just put all but one type of weapon and get nothing but that ammunition. Otherwise I'd be dropping everything but my magnum at the first opportunity.

Enemy defense barely ever matters though when you're already breaking the damage limit on every hit.

It matters to deal a good amount of damage. You can't make something as good as a Celestial weapon, even if it has all the same skills; they play by special rules.

'Course, this really only matters if you're doing sidequests and post-game content; nothing in the main story requires anything close to the ridiculous poo poo the bonus bosses get up to

I recently beat penance without any of the celestial weapons and that was the only one of the optional bosses that gave me any trouble, and it wasn't because my weapons didn't do enough damage, but because I was tired of the game and half assed my entire set up so I spent more time healing than even hitting him.

I'm playing RE4 Remake on PS4, the only system with a texture loading issue and I don't think there's a way to fix that. The game looks like a mod at some points. Very nice PS4 graphics character models on top of shiny lumpy and wet looking backgrounds. At some points it looks like if you pulled a RE2 Remake model and put them into Heavenly Sword or something.

Flash grenades are probably the single most ammo efficient item you can craft. You can kill a dozen plaga with one grenade/five gunpowder. Don't sleep on the Bolt Action. You can leave the scope off for medium distance and its penetration power is great for shield guys or tight corridors. It's also very efficient when crafting ammo

So in Titan Quest, the game really respects your time management. Not your time, it's still an ARPG with endless loot and monster grinding across three difficulties to complete, but it's got these things called "fountains of rebirth" at the entrance to literally every zone that act as save and respawn points. If you are progressing through the game, fountains of rebirth are easy places to just stop when you need to go do something else. (It also has this really nice trick where it just has two torches or braziers or lamps at every chokepoint that light up as you approach, telling you progress is through here, go back if you want to hoover up any remaining enemies.)

But in Grim Dawn, the spiritual/developer sequel, this respect is gone. Fountains of rebirth are gone. Instead, the game always respawns you at the starting town when you start a play session, and expects you to use the fast travel gates to go to wherever you last were and go from there. The problem is that these gates do not correspond to the actual number of areas really well. So you can have a gate that takes you to another town, and a questline starts there to go kill some monsters - but killing those monsters can be three zones away, inside another dungeon inside that last zone. You better be ready to just sit down and play through all of that, even if you don't know how long it's going to take. Because closing the game for awhile puts you back at the starting town again, and respawns all the monsters again, so if you get midway through and quit then you've got to fight through all of that poo poo again to get back to where you were before.

This dilemma certainly isn't unusual for video games like this, but it is annoying because they had it perfect before and just decided not to bother this time for some reason.

Grim Dawn is a step back from Titan Quest in multiple ways like that. It's frustrating, even when I didn't even like Titan Quest that much to begin with.

I started playing Diablo 4 recently and I can't believe it has the same issue. I'm still super early so maybe I didn't unlock something yet, but I was walking through the wilderness to reach a remote village with a sidequest, and the village didn't have a waypoint to fast travel to. I wanted to stop but didn't know if I'd have to do the whole trip again, so I went into a dungeon nearby. I soon had to absolutely stop, came back an hour later - PS5 had turned itself to sleep due to power saving - and the game had kicked me out (because it's always online even though I don't have PS+), I had to login, dismiss 20 popups about buying PS+ and their shop, then I found myself back in the starting town, all Dungeon progress reset, and I had to hike back to the village too. Just great

I have similar problems with RE8 on a last generation console. The lighting/shading gradients in particular suffer from some really bad banding (I think that's the term). Meaning the color blends aren't smooth and have distinct "breaks" in them; kind of like paint by number. Hope I'm explaining that well.

It's their DRM and anti cheat solution essentially, they did it with 3 as well, because they had an auction house that used real money early on. (Incentivising lovely design around rare and hard to grind = scarce items.)

No point in trying to profit off of users buying and selling ingame items if they could just pop offline, edit their save, and flood the market with full 'diablo's taint' sets of armor for 100usd a pop or whatever.

The fact that it makes it function as an extremely effective drm is just a cherry on top for them.

E: and them selling cosmetics would be less effective if most people never went online.

I've beaten the game twice now (a second time because I didn't understand how to start New Game Plus and deleted the 2nd playthrough file) so I get the gist of how to play it but I just wanna complain because I think they're tough to track and I don't like being ambushed like that. I probably should've been trying to get the plaga to erupt intentionally instead of just panic throwing one when 4 of them happen in one encounter.

But now I have the infinite ammo Handcannon (thank you Mercenaries mode) and the Primal Knife so I'm probably gonna just play it with all magnums and maybe a shotgun since I don't have to worry about ammo conservation and knife durability anymore. :v:

Edit: I just remembered that my other complaint is that they didn't take this opportunity to make the Merchant playable in Mercenaries mode.
