Tried to get photo of meteors but i was not lucky. Battery died quickly in -16 celsius + wind in the dark wilderness lol (chill zone? more like freeze zone) taken with canon eos 40d and a 20mm 3.5 lens from 1970's russia or something. have badly compressed gif of still images edit: .cr2 images in windows looks horrendous lol Big Mackson fucked around with this message at 16:48 on Dec 14, 2023 |

That aurora animation is a cool plan B though. Catching meteors is a huge pain in the rear end. I feel like you need a lens that can do 1.4 to have any success (it took me 7 years to learn this).

Just keep in mind that a meteor will hit a pixel on your sensor for about 1/100 of a second and they're roughly as bright as an average star. So next time you're out take some 1/100 shots of the sky and note how many stars you've captured. Adjust iso and aperture to get as many stars as possible and that's a ballpark for your meteor setup. When actually doing meteors set the exposure length as long as possible to avoid star trails then sit back and relax. And yes, winter astro is painful. It's why I skip the geminids.. sitting idle in the cold is no fun at all. Last time I tried it was a lunar eclipse several years ago at -13C and was miserable. I eventually cobbled a setup where I ran the wires for my intervalometer and battery pack through the car door and sat in the car all night.

If you expose for 1/100th of a second then crank your shutter to multiple seconds you're going to be massively overexposed because your ISO will be cranked. The sweet spot for astro on most sensors is ISO 3200, then open your lens up all the way and start around 6-10 seconds and adjust as needed from there for your focal length and light pollution.

Meteors do last longer, but they move. The light from them will only hit a specific pixel on your sensor for a very short time as they streak across the scene.

ISO 800 was very low, should have had 1600 minimum. Next time i use a 18-50 2.8 sigma objective and try to get a meteor mid death fall.
