This doesn't have to be a big debate or anything [lobs a big cartoon bomb with the word DEBATE on it into the thread] but when Homer chuckles and goes "Yes, once." in this scene, is the joke that Homer actually has seen a guy say goodbye to a shoe before or is he saying yes because Hank just did it? Or is it some other meaning/reference entirely? Was surprised to learn my wife and I had different interpretations.

I always took it as “he’s referring to Hank doing it three seconds earlier” but it’s a tricky line read to interpret because I’m pretty sure it was improvised. Albert Brooks’ characters were relatively unscripted, they’d just let him go nuts in the booth and work it out from there.

It was just adlibbing but Dan thinks it's funner if Homer means the time he just saw; "I probably thought it was a previous time, but it is funnier if it means he saw it at that moment."
