can anyone explain what the cash create vs in kind thing is about? https://x.com/rhorider/status/1745847519639470203 it's good for bitcoin, naturally

so im not sure what these random crypto twitter schizo ramblings are about but the way the bitcoin ETFs work is that the ETF shares can be traded on the market like normal ETFs or redeemed with the ETF issuer for cash normally ETFs generally can be redeemed for the underlying asset, so if you give, say, an s&p 500 etf share to the issuer they would give u whatever percents of the underlying stocks are appropriate (in-kind means this) instead, when u buy a bitcoin ETF from the issuer, they take that cash and give it to the bitcoin holder/custodian which is a different company and that company gives the ETF issuer back some bitcoin and vice versa as well in this sense, the ETF doesnt directly interact with the underlying asset so you cant really arbitrage it away completely, its up to the ETF issuer to choose when to exchange cash for bitcoins or vice versa, as long as they can afford to pay out ETF redemptions koolkal fucked around with this message at 00:31 on Jan 16, 2024 |

gensler presumbly did it because he really didn't want random assholes showing up with buttcoin with incredibly shady provenance to become exchange traded, and then in turn become redeemable by someone who can go and present a coupon for x butts at the etf and get that many butts in return to probably engage in more crime. and instead of going onto an exchange and buying butts to, you know, fulfill the function of an etf that is premised on owning butts, they've instead decided to use options and other derivatives to say they have the ability to fulfill the legal obligation to have so many butts on the books, which is what some leveraged etfs do. (tqqq, e.g., is an etf that moves 3x times the direction of the nasdaq). so it seems like the etfs have not impacted the price of butts because even they don't want to hold onto the actual asset in question.
