It's simple, it works, it's good. There's an additional level where you can moderate it so that someone gets prioritized if their point/side/argument is underrepresented in the group and deprioritized otherwise -- if you heard 9 yea arguments already you want to get a nay argument up there. Also works, also good, less simple but it's useful. at some point (post-occupy?) the "representation" stopped referring to position but instead to identity representation within the organization body. if it's mostly white males in the queue the idea is that you prioritize eg. a black female speaker because her voice is likely underrepresented in general in the org. it's a fine sentiment but in practice it becomes endless insane arguments about who deserves to be prioritized over whom. you don't get anything done and everybody gets to go insane fighting about how an how relatively represented a trans white woman is compared to a cis black man. in my case because it was DSA it was 99% comfortable white people arguing who amongst them was more traumatized and mentally ill

I'm not currently a member of DSA but I still show up for random activities they organize (rallies, canvasses, union trainings etc.) bc they definitely have dedicated people doing good work even within a very dysfunctional and politically haphazard org. There's also PSL in some places which seems to be gaining members over the last period? And has a more coherent position on internationalism and the role of American leftists than an org like socialist alternative. They're all fairly small potatoes of course but that's the conditions we live in so w/e. psl also has the advantage of being a revolutionary marxist-leninist organization that utilizes democratic centralism to avoid the comedy of fuckups that was the DSA

At its pre-pandemic peak there was certainly a major contingent of creepy guys who legitimately thought "it's ok, im just being sex positive" was a good excuse for hitting on every woman in the org. One of the people I'd hang out with at DSA events was this woman who worked as a stripper. The only reason I learned she was a stripper was because I was having a conversation with her and some other guy recognized her, proceeded to identify the club she worked at, and started to ask questions about her schedule to go there and see her. DSA national has always sucked poo poo and exists primarily to siphon funds away from local orgs. I remember at one point it was voted on to start distributing more money back to the local orgs so they wouldn't have to solicit additional donations from members to do things like print flyers, but I don't remember if that ever actually got enacted
