I can see camera controls working a lot better with mouse, yeah. It's really saying something when Monster Hunter's camera is better than Elden Ring's. From's camera can't keep up with the faster bosses in recent games.

World's clutch claw kinda requires the same aiming precision as wirebug so you might get some mileage out of m+k.

I've actually been converting over to M&KB for Monster Hunter as well: it's been difficult as the games are incredibly more intuitive on controller, but there are certain benefits like smoother camera control, aiming bowguns more accurately, and using items through the numpad is very nice. And of course, the biggest benefit is that it doesn't hurt my wrists as much: my play sessions were getting incredibly short due to the pain it caused me! I've been thinking of trying to do this same conversion for other intense controller games like DMC.

In this case, it was done to avoid crippling my hands, but there are a lot of games where it is great to convert over to an unusual control scheme. Biggest example I can think of is Splatoon: once I got over the initial confusion, converting to gyroaiming was a revelation and allowed for so much more accuracy in combat. Despite me telling them this, I have so many friends that stubbornly stick to control stick aiming because it's what they are familiar with, only for them to get dunked on in multiplayer constantly: I hate to break it to them, but they only have themselves to blame!

Everything other than camera is better with a controller though.
When are they releasing Steam Controller 2 so we can play monster hunter but with the virtual-trackball mouse for camera control

Eons ago (probably like two years gently caress if I know anymore) I remember someone briefly proselytizing about Cepheus Protocol, an early access zombie survival game with more of a milsim tactics vibe than a single survivor. Then of course I promptly forgot about it until just now, when Steam diving brought it back to the surface. Anyone who had any thoughts on it? It seems cool but it also looks like the archetypal over ambitious slow to update EA game.

I think they wouldn’t do that anyway, the Steam controller seemed like a trial run for the control setup of the Deck more than a viable product.

wasn't the steam controller patent situation due to the back paddles? they kept those on the steam deck so are they just paying to license the patent now

The back paddle patent is weird- they may be getting around it because they’re permanently affixed, or have limited motion, or ???

There are controllers out there that get around the patent problem with stuff like that. I had one- the Razer Wolverine I think?

That is the ultimate sticking point. I will say that it gradually gets better as you progress through the series because each game gets successively less picky and janky with its keybinds (and has better mouse control in menus).

With a bit of tinkering I've ironed out KB+M setups across all of the games and the only basically unsolvable problem is the jankiness of free-aiming bows (because it uses both attack buttons) and the very rare edge case of something like the Stormcaller in DS3 which has strange mechanics that confuse even controller users.

Another game beat: man, I'm really grinding through them lately! Anyway, copied from the 'beat a game' thread:

FutureCop posted:

Recently beat Gravity Circuit!

Here's my steam review:

What else can I say that isn't patently obvious from just looking at this? Obviously, if you're a fan of Mega Man Z/X games or action platformers in general, then this game will be right up your alley and well-worth the purchase. Game looks great, movement is smooth, feedback is juicy, levels and bosses are varied and fantastic, combat is fun to flex on enemies with your varied arsenal of moves and satisfying grapple-throw mechanic, and so on. Even when I beat the game around 6 hours, I was still jonsing for more and would easily consider a replay just for the fun of it, if not to also unlock achievements or challenge myself on harder difficulties.

If I were to have any gripes about the game to be wary of, they'd be mostly auxiliary concerns:

*The story wasn't much to sneeze at and felt a bit unsatisfying. It's kind of stuck in that awkward middle-ground where it doesn't do a classic 'beat the bad guys' nothing story, and it doesn't go crazy with a wild complex story either with all sorts of twists and turns: it just starts to dip into complex stuff late in the game but didn't feel like it built upon it enough to make it worth it or have some sort of satisfying meaning or ending. It's fine, but it's almost a case where less might've been more?

*The various directional moves and burst techniques Gravity Circuit has and can unlock makes you think it'd be a really fun and stylish action game where you're going all DMC on enemies with cuhrazy combos, but it all feels very token and unnecessary. Some moves like your upwards kick will just get you into trouble since if you don't kill with it, you'll end up ramming yourself into an enemy and taking contact damage. Furthermore, enemies will generally die in a few hits meaning there's no chance for big combos, and bosses aren't a candidate for combos either since the game will force constant invuln states to prevent you from comboing them too long.

*Similar to above, the various chips you can unlock feel very token as well. You're almost guaranteed to have one slot reserved for double jump because of course you will, and you're also guaranteed to have another one of your slots reserved for the attack length extension because it's way too dangerous and annoying to get so close to enemies that have contact damage with your stubby fists otherwise. That means you just have one chip slot free, meaning there isn't that much freedom for customization (not that the remaining choices are that great).

Basically, it's a great game overall, but a lot of the auxillary systems that I thought would be really neato like burst/chip customization are just there to look cool for trailers instead of serving important design purposes, so don't expect this to push the envelope.

Man, I've been playing a bunch of Risk of Rain 2 again (getting the mastery skins on every character) and it's been fun except that a lot of your runs can suddenly just...end. Like, I've got tonnes of items, I'm blowing through waves of monsters and then some elite variant will touch me and I'll go from full to zero, even though I think there's supposed to be some kind of anti 1-shot mechanic built in. It's always been my problem with the game's difficulty: sudden, instantaneous death with only the vaguest understanding of why it happened or how it could have been avoided.

in theory, if you have over 90% health, then you have one-shot protection(OSP) and cant get killed in one hit. You can see a diagonal series of lines on the start of your health bar if you have the OSP active. In practice, it gets a bit iffy

for starters, some items, like the personal shield generator, can end up hurting your OSP since it factors the shield into the 90% health. since there's no way to heal shield outside of letting it regen normally, it can take a long time to regain OSP if you lost it through normal damage, even if you have a ton of healing. i usually recycle all shield items for this reason, but there are some builds that benefit so much from shields that it works out

other items, like the shaped glass, will outright remove the OSP mechanic. Anything that cuts your max health will cause this

finally, enemies can be real dicks about the mechanics, like whisps or fire elites. They hit hard enough at later levels to get you down to one health and they also light you on fire so that the single tick of burn damage will kill you

the only way to be truly safe is to just not get hit, which is tough at the start, becomes much easier as you loop once or twice, and becomes impossible in later loops as theres too many enemies. Eventually you will get killed, but you can circumvent this for many loops if you are skilled enough. never stand still, always sprint, and jump/use mobility skills everywhere at all times. this is part of the reason why huntress is considered the best character for high eclipse, since she can fire while sprinting and has several movement abilities

I saw it was causing some fuss but bailed on the story once I read a lot of overreacting elsewhere to a part of the story being complete bollocks. I just don't know if that means the ENTIRETY of it is a load of nothing or if parts of the story still have merit.

I'm jonesing to play both some classic Street Fighter (via the 30th anniversary collection) and some Resident Evil, all of which I already own on Steam but don't currently have installed. Any red flags I need to be aware of before installing or are we good?
