Yeah the brothers had great chemistry and the parents were absolute monsters. Best ensemble performance of the year IMO.

I didn't hate Iron Claw. I'd give it maybe three stars out of five. Efron was good. A lot of obvious performances otherwise though, and the film felt very stagnant and I don't think captured the rhythms and vibes of wrestling that well.

I can't even really get all my thoughts out about it though because the Ric Flair performance in the Iron Claw is possibly the worst rendition of a real person I've ever seen in a movie. So comically bad.

There are a ton of histories of World Class and the Von Erichs. For the quickest read, track down the Wrestling Observer's/Dave Meltzer's very lengthy 1993 obit of Kerry. It goes into a lot. You should be able to Google it pretty easily.

Tokyo Gore Police

This was a fun Friday night flick to unwind to. A girl watches her dad get assassinated and grows up to be an Engineer hunter. Engineers are mutated humans that when limbs are cut off, sprout into monstrous growths and weapons becoming even stronger. The tone of this movie reminded me of the Shin Megami Tensei video game series a little bit, and even some of the designs reflect that. Dark, weird, and a little pervy. The special effects are both surprisingly good and surprisingly bad. You'll be wowed one moment while wondering how they missed that a tube to squirt the blood is completely visible the next. I would love to see a documentary on one of these types of movies.

Leave the World Behind

I surprisingly enjoyed this movie quite a bit! The best part of these types of movies are usually the events that happen before and during the catastrophe, and then the movies often fall apart when they explain what is going on and the movie becomes bad and awful and dumb. This one manages to barely avoid that, and I'm thankful for it. It feels like whoever made this was reading my mind for what would make a good movie in this genre, and went with it. Save for Julia Robert's character, I enjoyed the cast quite a bit. Thumbs up.

The Menu (2022)

A horror dark comedy. A very prestigious chef has a restaurant on an island that most people would dream of being able to eat at. The main character, Margot, is invited along by her boyfriend for a once in a lifetime dinner. The island staff immediately give off weird vibes, and it only gets worse. A great concept with a lot of amusing bits. Finally, a movie that stars John Leguizamo in an appropriate role! It's not perfect, but it's definitely entertaining.

Beau is Afraid (2023)

It's all in the title of the movie. All of it. This is one of those movies that made me feel like I should have enjoyed it more than I did. I typically love weird psychological movies, but when you have one that is three hours of non-stop anxiety driven episodes, it just sucks you dry emotionally and a little bit mentally as well. The acting by Joaquin Phoenix was absolutely amazing, and the look and feel of the movie, especially the early scenes, were just fantastic. But at the end of the movie, I didn't feel very moved by it, but I was still glad to have seen it.

Thanks for this, your review piqued (peaked?) my interest so I gave it a shot and really liked it. Really funny characters and pretty much every one is fun to watch, although the fact the film makes it very clear that everyone is going to die quite early on sort of takes a bit of the sting out of the tension. A solid 3.5/5 though.

The H-Man (1958)

A pretty old flick that pre-dated The Blob by about six months, and was far more complex than I was expecting. A drug smuggler goes missing leaving behind only his clothes. The police and his gang are looking for him, and his :taco:girlfriend:taco: is the only lead they can follow. Some fun scenes on a boat, nightclub, and a few other places keep the movie interesting.

Blair Witch (2016)

A younger brother of one of the missing girls from the first film discovers new video evidence that his sister may still be alive, so he gathers a group of friends and marches them out into the forest. I was not enjoying most of the first half of the movie, then it ramped up fairly well, and the last 10-15 minutes were, all things considered, pretty great.

What a heavy movie. A teenager has an unhealthy obsession with vampires. His struggle with normalcy is at odds with his obsession, resulting in several uncomfortable scenes. "This is hosed up." ran through my head several times. While I appreciate the story, this was just hard for me to watch.

I've only ever watched shoplifters from this director before, a film I liked but didnt love. This however... Is very close to being my favourite of 2023 and I maybe give it 5/5 upon a rewatch. Great acting from everyone, and especially the kids are doing amazing work. Weirdly engaging with what is often kind of the same story from different perspectives, and absolutely beautiful.

A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting (2020)

Yeah, this movie wasn't for me. This is more of a kids flick, and it just didn't seem funny or fun to me. It looked really good, and the kids acting were fine. But the story was just kinda meh. Little kids keep getting kidnapped by monsters who want to take control of their dreams and the babysitter club comes to the rescue. Younger kids might really enjoy this, but it was kind of a slog for me.

NAZ REID
The Beekeeper (2024)

Went to see it with my longtime friend because we both felt like a Jason Statham movie. And neither of us were disappointed - this is definitely a film starring Jason Statham.

Dumb as balls, with the action shot neither conspicuously well nor conspicuously poorly. Cuts are a little quick but the setpieces demonstrate Statham's invincibility well enough. It's like John Wick but the thing that dies is an old lady instead of a dog. Also if the people who made John Wick were stupid. Jason Statham gets to deliver some one liners about bees. The thing I appreciated the most about this movie is that it is 100 minutes long.

We both had a nice time.

Noroi: The Curse (2005)

Japanese found footage movie. A paranormal author has decided to begin documenting his investigations with a camera. This movie goes down a crazy cool rabbit hole with a woman hearing strange noises coming from her neighbor's home. This is very much a long slow burning documentary / investigation that goes so many places and it wraps up really well. The locations, characters, and the way it's set up as a documentary, is so well done. Thumbs up!

The Teachers Lounge. 2/5

This is probably the most overrated film of 2023 I've seen. It's alright, but with some big flaws as well imo. Every single character seems to just say the worst possible thing, or do the worst possible thing, to progress the story. Some of the moves that are made here just dont seem very believable to me. Also some quite poor acting from some of the kids, although the main actress is good.

Also I need to be paid more

Freaky (2020)

This was an incredibly fun and humorous movie. Brutal from the get go, the Blissfield Butcher is after high school teens. What starts off as a typical slasher flick, has a fun twist that changes the game. The cast and characters are fantastic and hilarious all the way through. There are a few eye-rolling scenes where the movie interjects some serious dialogue for the sake of relationship building, but thankfully those were rare. They were offset by some pretty great kill scenes. Fun stuff!

They really needed out-takes at the end of this! There is no way anyone kept a straight face through some of these scenes.

Night Swim (2024) is hilarious. I have so many questions. Some of them are answered by the director also being the film's writer. It's about a baseball player and his family who swim at night, and I"m uncertain if the writer had any familiarity with baseball outside of baseball movies, the practice of swimming, or the concept of night or family. I legit wondered if this script was heavily punched up by chatgpt or something because everything feels just a single shade away from being outright plagiarism. There is no way you could describe the plot of this film to someone without them thinking you were bullshitting them.

American Fiction -- Sharp satire that's largely about how the market for black fiction mostly demands trauma porn, and it's not subtle about making this point, but it gets more nuanced in other ways. Personally I was fully on board from the first scene with the overly delicate college student because that spoke to my own sensibilities, and I was happy to see a piece of mainstream media make the case for the use-mention distinction, which is an important concept that most people seem to have forgotten about. But later on when Monk starts to question his own biases and consider that there might be a place for the kind of fiction he derides, it made me think about how I could be just as susceptible to pandering as anyone, and maybe I was responding to certain earlier scenes because I was part of the choir they were preaching to at those times. It's a really smart film that presents a lot of arguments from different directions and doesn't hold the viewer's hand, letting you draw your own conclusions from it. Stark contrast to Barbie or Don't Look Up, both of which are funny and entertaining, but are very much about catering to a particular audience and reassuring that audience that they already have the correct, approved views (this also seems like what The American Society of Magical Negroes is going for, but I'll withhold judgment on that one until I see it). Outside of that, American Fiction is also a personal story with a family dynamic that's both funny and heartfelt. Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown, in particular, have great chemistry and comedic timing. Worth checking out! B+

Gonna rate the last two movies I saw, which were my first movies of the year

Blade (1998)

We used to be a country. We used to make movies. Used to be all you needed was Wesley Snipes saying one-liners while coating the walls with the blood of Vampire The Masquerades to make a good comic book movie. I'm Some Motherfuckers.

The Warriors (1979)

Some people will tell you America has a crime problem now, and I agree. The problem is that our criminals don't have fun themes and cool costumes anymore. If I got my car stolen by a Baseball Fury, it'd probably sting a lot less because those guys look badass. Anyway, my favorite part was when the Warriors, desperately running across New York for their lives with like 50k guys in hot pursuit, decided to take some time off to sexually harass some ladies. Priorities.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

A classic that still holds up 40 years later. A serial killer who preyed on little kids is murdered by parents in Springwood, Ohio. He comes back to haunt their teenage kid's dreams and kill them one by one. The movie starts off with one of the most brutal kills, and continues with many iconic scenes from then on. I remember seeing this as a kid at a huge birthday slumber party whose parents let him rent this and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre when we were around 10. I'm pretty sure at least 4 or 5 of those kids never slept that night.

It's an interesting series because of how it either plays it too safe or goes all over the place.

NOES: Awesome classic.

NOES2: Weird sequel that goes in a different direction and doesn't really fit well with the first one. Is never referenced again.

NOES3: A way better follow-up to the original that expands on the ideas it introduced.

NOES4-6: Just retreads of the third one that are increasingly worse.

New Nightmare: Fresh take on the series where you only need to know the first movie.

Freddy vs. Jason: Stupid, fun early 2000s schlock.

Reboot: Avoid at all costs.

Scifi horror at it's best. A ship with an experimental FTL drive goes missing and returns 7 years later. A rescue mission is sent out to see what happened and if the ship can be salvaged. A whole lot of blood, goop, and gore to go around. Besides the goofy Captain's chairs, the rest of the movie is done pretty drat well for its time, and holds up pretty good today. 28 Weeks Later (2007)

The follow-up to the amazing 2002 movie 28 Days Later. This one has an amazing cast, and it goes hard from the beginning, then goes even harder almost midway through. All hell breaks loose, and it's tense as hell. Unfortunately, the final act falls apart with ridiculous action sequences usually reserved for 80s Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, which throws off the really well sculpted apocalyptic vibe entirely, and even has a show-down with a zombie out of nowhere. The last half is just so amazingly terrible. It goes from 4 stars to 2 really quick.
