Mike believed in the shooting star, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter. Tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther... and then one fine morning-
So we beat on, subs against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
Should I invest in those things that make you invisible and quiet? I was trying to go unlock Ninja and the gigas in the Korroloka Tunnel one shot me

There are jobs that have sneak/invis as spells and jobs that have them as abilities. Dancer is a good sub for it's sneak and invis jig. If you don't have any of those unlocked yet, it takes about only a bit to level them. If you have spare gil, sneak and invis potions also work, but you're essentially throwing money away every time you get lost.

I'm officially done trying to unlock jobs at level 30, I went to go to the lake in the past for the Dancer unlock and some ladybug aggroed and hit me for 330 damage.

If you don't have enough spare gil for silent oil and prism powder, either you aren't burning your sparks every week (Acheron Shields are fastest but items all have the same sparks:gil ratio at about 1:9.8) or you should hit up a goon if you're on Asura because we have gil to spare!

Uh... Kupo?

Caps aren't targets, they're limits set up to save the most broke-brained among us from ourselves. I really wouldn't worry about sparks (or anything) in FFXI other than having a good time vibing.

FF14 mercifully has low currency caps and low weekly caps so a lot of people quickly hit cap and then try to find something fun to do instead of grinding whatever.

FFXI is a long term game and you'll be spending a lot of time in it just grinding things out and waiting. Having a social circle to turn to in game helps, in both terms of having a helping hand with things you're having difficulty with and to steer you in the right direction in terms of most efficient use of your time. If you're on Asura, you should join the discord linked below and see if someone is willing to escort you around to the various areas you need to hit to unlock jobs and such.

CodfishCartographer posted:

Come join the discord! We've got a few active goons on Asura, and more that pop online now and then during free trials or when they feel like wasting money etc. Very chill community that enjoys helping folks out.

Can hit that in an hour or less at endgame pace, just to clarify why it exists when that constitutes about a million gil.

And since nobody said it yet, week resets Sunday morning. JP midnight I think, but I actually have forgotten.

(the Unity Accolade version of the sink is Prize Powders, which you have to buy in stacks of 99 but are also 1 accolade:10 gil for a max of 99999 spent for 1m gil a week as well - it does add up even if you're not hitting cap every week!)

I like how you can't use trusts in BCNMs.

Also I'm on Bahaumut, the quickstart guide says explicitly not to go on Asura lol

You can summon trusts once in most bcnms.

Bahamut owns. Felt active without being the cluster that is Asura.

That said I don’t think anyone I used to play with, either from 2009 or when I re-subbed three years ago, is still active. If you get really stuck on something I could put out the batsignal on my old Discord.

Nah I'll just outlevel it.

I couldn't summon trusts for the BCNM for Sandoria mission 2-3

Should I just level Warrior or something? Dancer and Ninja and Runefencer are supposed to be good subs for Thief but I don't think I can reasonably unlock them as a fresh 30 with no other jobs.

Kongming
Aug 30, 2005

Dancer and Rune are easy with mounts. Ninja you have to kill NMs and you'll need sneak/invis but the NMs are very weak the only issue is there are three of them so you might get got at level 30 before your trusts can help you. Whenever I made a new character I would just take WAR to 50 first and do LB1 and 2 and then level whatever I actually wanted to level. 50 WAR can unlock any job with ease and can do a good chunk of the early Rhapsody missions (basically everything up to Siren) and get some of the Key Items.

Edit: Also WAR can be subbed to any melee and it will serve you well. THF/WAR is perfectly fine for leveling.

Bregor
May 31, 2013

People are idiots, Leslie.
If THF is your main just level WAR or MNK as a sub, it doesn’t matter at all for leveling with trusts.

It doesn't matter with trusts.

The only thing will need some kind of sneak/invis method and or mounts to make unlocking all the jobs possible. Get to 30 and worry about these things.

We transferred last night to Bahamut and going from a server with just averaging 200 or so ppl to 1000+ is shocking. I'll probably miss how quiet it was.

Nope, it's SE doing DMCA take downs. Which is why I find it hilarious. They're doing what Blizzard did to private WoW server streamers. Quite a few are feeling "targeted" for no real reason.

The community stream Twitch chat being absolutely full of people talking about private servers probably did not help, although obviously I doubt a NA community stream is the driving factor.

No idea why you'd ever go anywhere else, Asura has mercs to get content cleared without relying on randos and also randos to get content run without relying on mercs.

A prevalent guide writer, Spicyryan, has a grudge against how many mercs and bots there are on Asura, and so in his guides directs people away from the server. Some prominent FFXIV content creators presumably saw this advice and took it at face value, and thus started advising others to go elsewhere too.

The thing is, other servers don't actually have more people playing, there's just fewer bots / mercs in chat polluting things. Asura is still the server with the highest active player base, and while there is a lot of chaff to filter out of chat (either with add-ons or the in-game chat filter), the bots / mercs very rarely directly interfere with gameplay.

Currently he's a 'dev' (read: ideas guy) on one of the private servers. I don't know if he even plays retail anymore.

To add on to this, the bots also provide a service for the pointlessly grindy poo poo you don't want to do anyway (Job Points/Master levels) so it's a net benefit to have them around.

On the other hand every other server has at least 90% less racist/homophobic/sexist/etc poo poo being said in shout chat (or, at least did when a bunch of streamers weren't playing).

Doesn't mean the other servers are free of it, but it's super concentrated on asura.

EDIT: basically play on an empty server until you decide you're at a point where you want to hire mercs, pay $10 and world transfer.
