You mean the Mew VMax deck? It's still the best deck in the format if nobody is playing hate for it. (That's probably going to be true the entire time it's legal). You're ultimately at the mercy of whether people in your local scene decide to bring that hate though. I'd also mention the Lugia VStar deck - it's a very straightforward gameplan that you're executing every game, feels powerful once you're going, and you can dip your toes into the deckbuilding side of the game by tuning what attackers and energies you use around the core shell.

blossommirage posted:Anyone have advice for how to call judges for behavior stuff? I played against someone who was just taking calls in the middle of a league cup and wouldn't stop talking instead of playing the game and it was so frustrating. What I would do is call the judge and if necessary step away from your seat to tell them what is happening, see what they say, and if necessary to watch for any unsportsmanlike or disruptive behavior. If asked, say that you are trying to win in a timely and respectful manner especially because points and prizes are on the line. Or if they are taking too long because of answering calls ask to watch for slow play. Depending on the vibe that you get from this player you can also ask them to focus on the game and not answer calls and then take it to a judge when they refuse. Or if you're crushing the person because they aren't paying attention then I wouldn't mind and let them be lol But absolutely don't be afraid to involve a judge especially if it's competitive rulings, even if it's just minor rulings.

I appreciate all the advice! I ended up misplaying at the end of game 2 by attacking without bossing for my last prize cards and just conceded rather than enduring a game 3. I was 0-1-3 at that point anyway so it's not like I was going to make top cut. Huge bummer ending for the day, but the rest of my games were a great time.

Kid just started getting into PTCG, seems rad. I can’t work out where online to see what the current ‘regulation’ cards are, the local game store says E, F & G and that this will change in March. Great, but how are you expected to track this? The only related info I can find is on the official website and says only E & F are in play, I presume I just follow advice of the local game store as that’s where the battles will be going down, thoughts?

The format is "E and later", I'm guessing you're finding an article that was written before any G cards were released? The actual rules supporting that are in the "Play! Pokemon Tournament Rules Handbook" on this page. There hasn't been an announcement of when the next rotation will be, but March is probably as good a guess as any.

I recently started playing Pokémon tcg with my friend on tabletop simulator, and it's been a lot of fun. We've been rolling for 5 randomly generated pokémon and then building our decks using them. Previously we opened a bunch of digital boosters and built decks from that, which was good, but not as fun. Both of us hadn't played since around the Team Rocket expansion, so we've been playing with lots of newer formats. Post Heart Gold and Soul Silver, I think the game gets too crazy with powerful basic pokémon, and its not much fun if you're on the receiving end. Also you don't get to have the fun of evolving your guys and building up a team. Ex is the most fun to play, but the lack of pokédex entries on the cards makes the cards themselves less exciting. Has anyone else tried anything like this, or come up with fun ways of playing? HootTheOwl posted:I haven't played since Rocket On, what's still legal? I meant the Ex series, like Ex Ruby and Sapphire, Ex Sandstorm etc. The pokémon ex are interesting too though, though for super-powerful basics, I prefer the shining pokémon from the Neo series since they're more limited and less likely to do mad sweeps. We haven't tried Sun & Moon yet, the latest we've gone is the Black and White cards thus far. We only play once or twice a week since he has a kid. Edit: there's a format called 15/3 which is also really good, which goes from Base set to the Gym cards, but limits you to 15 trainers and only 3 of a pokémon type in a deck. I found it on this guy's blog and it's a pretty fun way to play the earlier games, since you can't just put loads of drawin cards like Bill or Professor Oak in your deck without sacrificing other trainers which might work well. We had a game today, and my friend surprised me with two cards which he made using some online card maker, as they were originally written, I think they were a bit too powerful, but he's since revised them. What do you guys think? This was brought on by a previous game we had where I informed him he couldn't evolve surfing pikachu into raichu and he got frustrated. I think being able to get two energy from the discard with cloud charge is a bit too powerful, and I'm not sure about the Pokémon Power for Surfing Raichu either, but I might be being too harsh.

You know I never considered there is no surfing or flying raichus. Also here is a pair of Paradox Rift codes. Didn't get anything amazing from the booster packs, maybe somebody will get something good from the codes.

Does Alolan Raichu count, who is both flying and surfing? Although not as cool as having balloons tied to it in order to fly.

Looks like something I used to think up when I was a kid. They made me smile throughout the match honestly. His deck contained every single pikachu/raichu from base set to gym, which was super cute. I do think I've changed my mind on the 15/3 format though. Even though I understand why limiting the amount of trainer cards to 15 makes sense in a game with super-powerful trainers, it means that you also can't do interesting and fun things with trainer cards and the game just turns into 'who can get the best draw', which is not as fun. Next we're going to try combining the Black & White cards with X & Y, still randomly generating the pokémon though. No idea how balanced it will be, but because the later booster series are so limited in the pokémon available, combing two together seems necessary.

I knew there'd be people knowledgeable about this game here! We were using Base-Gym, we haven't played Base-Neo before, but we have played Rocket-Neo, which is probably my second favourite format after the ex series. Is Base-Neo fun? Since we're both fairly new, and making up our own rules for how to build decks or cards to include, knowledge about balance is great even when it doesn't pertain to particular cards. I'll send him your post since you seem really well informed.

I've been a big MTG player for like four years but a friend told me to try pokemon tcg. I've been playing a Lost Zone Giratina deck on PTGC live and I'm kinda hooked. What's the best way to get into this game on paper? My LGS runs pokemon events so I'm set on that front, are the challenger deck equivalents (e: league battle decks) anywhere near competitive out of the box or should I just buy singles?

I bought singles for my lost zone tina. It's a little annoying compared to mtg because I had to buy a single card from different shops on tcgplayer. Like buying 4 giratina vstar from 4 different places compared with my experience with mtg where I could buy mostly everything from cardkingdom. Although pokemon still ends up being insanely cheap in comparison and most decks are $50-100. edit: idk what a challenger deck is but I would watch the regionals coverage and then just net deck something in the meta using https://limitlesstcg.com/ tina lost box has been relevant since before obsidian flame so there hasn't been huge metagame shakeups compared to mtg where the standard meta makes huge shifts with each release AlphaKeny1 fucked around with this message at 12:24 on Dec 9, 2023 |

The most recent set looked like it'd cause a big shake-up because there were a bunch of decks that seemed like they'd be really good and break into the meta... and then it turned out that the biggest winner was one of the existing meta decks that got a couple of new tools to cover its weakest match-ups. (Specifically, Gardevoir ex, which went from a solid Tier 2 to the undisputed best deck in the format.) Edit: If you're going to get into buying singles, avoid buying expensive cards that are only available in [E] format, on the bottom left. (i.e. Battle VIP Pass, a $3 card that really wants you to run four copies... and that can be easily budget-replaced with Nest Ball, a $0.50 uncommon.) They'll be rotating out of the standard format in a few months. Anything with [F] or [G] will be legal through next year and into 2025. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 13:57 on Dec 9, 2023 |

I ended up with cards coming from 11 different shops, but they all did arrive so that was cool. It was also annoying though because I think each shop was +$1 in shipping.

I've been playing Giratina exclusively for a few months, played in the league challenge and went 0-7. It's such a different world than league cups, it's crazy. I think I got a lot of nerves out of the way today, and I don't think I was playing as badly near the end. Just got unlucky by the end of it. I did get a full art Marnie from one of the vendors, which is a card I've wanted for awhile. Not too bad!

My 6yo usually begs to play, plays a few turns and then starts packing the game up. He did draw a Pokemon Catcher and then immediately announce how he could use it to ambush my Pikachu, which I was proud of. But then it never happened because he got bored and picked up a turn later. Well, maybe in a year or two. This is the same kid who plays solid chess until he castles and then cries if I do anything to mess up his castle, like putting my queen where he needs to capture it using a kingside pawn. As a sometimes MTG dabbler I haven't really found the fun in Pokemon TCG myself yet, but it's fun to watch the kids get excited about it.

The early Pokemon is much closer to early mtg, where you're playing a series of OP trainer cards (like the zero mana one-sided wheel in professor oak, or r the free divination in Bill) but then you're limited to just one attack to KO one Pokemon and your op gets to do their turn and do it all over again to you. Anyways, get 59 psychic energy and an early Mewtwo and just use barrier 58 times until they deck themselves. Sorry, did you want your kids to quit, or... (But also the best way to play the Pokemon TCG is just pick your favorite Pokemon and ignore the competitive aspect. Much like kitchen table magic) Anyways thanks for bringing up my two favorite tcgs in the parenting thread where I can admit I already bought my 4mo the Pokemon tcg classic thing for when she's old enough.

Started 3-0-3, ended up losing my last 3 games for a clean 3-3-3. Tina was good to me, but I failed him with some bad misplays in a couple of important games. Definitely benefitted from the challenge, I think I played well overall, but I definitely have room to improve. The entire experience was really fun, I definitely wanna go to Orlando and New Orleans now.
