I've always liked the art. Earlier strips are a lot heavier on the inking, and also have a bit of that early 2000s digital coloring thing going on where everybody was a bit amazed at what digital tools could do (which they couldn't actually get very complicated since the tools were still new) so the shading makes everything look extra round from the circular gradient tool. Later pages do a lot more complicated things with the coloring, often nearly erasing lines entirely while emphasizing contours with shadows and rimlighting. Often there's even little details with seemingly no lines, just the colors putting them in. I think more recent pages are more prone to cartoony exaggeration than they used to be? But then they've also gotten away from the whole thing with eyes having sharp peaks to them. The mouths have always been prone to doing weird things; expressions get very exaggerated. If you really want more of the older Foglio style, they've been bumping around indie comics for a long time. They put up Buck Godot and Mythadventures on their website, but they're only really viewable through the wayback machine; there might be some kind of rights issue or it may just be that the web design part of the Foglio Studio is entirely hosed. Buck Godot is really good and worth a read.

The first volume has been colorized fairly recently. You can see some kind of difference in the second volume from the more recent comics. And since I've been thinking about the weird digital coloring of the early 2000s lately, here's some contemporaneous examples:       Although the easier ones for me to pull and look at are from sources with a lot more money to play around with the newest technology rather than indie stuff. I guess also volume two goes a lot harder with color saturation for thematic reasons, but it does seem like that was a popular style for a while (although there was also another big fad for super desaturated grey colors for a little while).

A lot of Foglio stuff is unsettling because facial features slide around on the face while maintaining the same basic skull shape from almost every angle. To get "the good stuff", you have to go pretty far back to a transitional period somewhere between choice and style.

i sincerely admire the foglios because there is no greater pain than wanting to make a comic when you know you can't draw humans for poo poo, yet somehow they just went ahead and did it anyway and have never let criticism of their art dampen their passion

The Foglios' artwork has always been something of an acquired taste. The lack of finesse doesn't typically detract from the story and they are able to bring some unique appeal to their visuals. Hopefully someday Girl Genius will reach a satisfying end point.

I like them. I just feel like people talk about Girl Genius like it's beautifully illustrated, and, uh, it's a bit shocking to see the actual pages. But maybe I'm thinking of a different comic.

Following webcomics always ends in tragedy. The creator will either turn out to be one of the worse people in existence (while drawing a comic about rainbow farts and puppies); or their life is going to fall apart with family illnesses/deaths; or they fail to edit the story and it spirals into a decades-long sidequest before they burn out; or it the comic is amazing and then when it ends you have nothing to follow anymore.
