Yeah, tarmacadam is not smooth. Sliding along it bareskin is the equivalent of holding a belt sander to your skin, running at the speed the motorbike had been going and with your bodyweight behind it. You don't want that poo poo to happen for even a second.

For most of my childhood, my father was a biker, and he'd take me to these huge biker rallies (like the superspreader event in Sturgis -- I mean, he didn't take me to that one, but it's an example of the setting) and there were guys -- a lot of guys -- who would proudly show you their road rash, or "hamburger" they would sometimes call it. People whose entire back looked like chewed up leather, their legs sometimes just SHINY AND BRIGHT, like it just sanded down their skin to a sheen. edit for anecdote: my father contributed a lot of money and worked with politicians and people campaigning to get helmet laws revoked. All my life, bumper stickers with HELMET LAWS SUCK and things like that, nonstop bitching about helmet laws, the government telling me I have to wear a fuckin helmet, etc. etc. When he got older and put away his Harley Davidsons in lieu of a bicycle, he wore a helmet. And I asked him about it, and he was surprised that either he hadn't made this clear or somehow I had not paid attention: he just didn't like being told what to do, but he wasn't an idiot. Of course he wears leather and a helmet, because he's riding a motorcycle, and most of his biker buddies do the same. credburn has a new favorite as of 04:42 on Jan 21, 2024 |

Went to the riverwalk to look at the koi. BabyGout decides to throw his chicken nugget in the water. After seeing the fish get so excited, he starts looking for more things to throw. And in goes the toy car. And starting to stop him from doing that I bobble my phone into the water too

I remember something similar happening to me as a kid on one of those concrete half-pipe-sled things (cannot recall for the life of me what the name was) when I got rammed into from behind and knocked off the sled at speed onto the concrete while wearing shorts. I wasn't very happy that summer.
