I was dumb posting but you have a lot of flavours to be special.

Orks aren't really one almighty turn and that's it. You have lots to do every turn and they're pretty tough plus have good numbers and a lot of armour. You can build Orks in a lot of ways and waaagh when the time is right.

I'd say for armies that can grind you've got guard, votann, tyranids and necrons. Guard, necrons and tyranids are well rounded armies.

E: I play tau and they're probably more on the Eldar end of the spectrum, but they're fun now and you can build pretty tough. You just have to be a fan of shooting.

Well, I already have a bunch of guard, so that's good news.

Votann do look cool, but I can't get over the land fortress looking like a fisher-price toy. Same goes for Necron's impression of Woll Smoth.

Then again the Ork codex is coming soon, maybe there will be options for building an army that doesn't focus on the waaagh turn.

The biggest issue is that most of the fancy DA units are not worth playing over regular SM units that fulfill a similar role. If you told me the best unit in the Deathwing detachment would be Azrael+10 Hellblasters before the codex came out I'd have called you crazy but here we are. Unless we see drops in point cost to many of the super special units, I can't imagine they'll see much use. At least Black Knights look beastly now in the ravenwing detachment.

A bigger issue for casual play is a whole bunch of missing datasheets and loadouts

I've found that painting eyes is a lot easier if you just paint the entire eye black, and then add on two white dots on each side of the eye- doing the opposite, more intuitive white eye, single black dot usually just ends up (when I do it, at least) making all my guys look googly eyed

Here's a slightly sad and very confused and/or concerned looking space marine head I didn't end up using, but the eyes turned out well with minimum effort, using the method above. Ignore the attempt at eyebrows, I clearly have no advice for those

The weird counterintuitive tip I have for eyes is to do them early rather than last - that way you can neaten them up while you’re doing the rest of the face if they’ve gone a bit blobby.

Apologies if this is a dumb question, but for the new Necrons, what model would you all use to represent the Technomancer/Plasmancer? I can't seem to find a model for them on the GW site. Buying a gift for a friend from a big list and I don't really know anything about Warhammer.

AndyElusive
Jan 7, 2007

For the Technomancer you could go with: The Necron Cryptek

and for the Plasmancer you could go with: The Necron Psychomancer or if you can find him there's the Plasmancer from the Indomitus box which has oddly never been released on it's own.

But really any Cryptek can be any kind of specialist nerd you want them to be. Like even this guy: Necron Chronomancer or this joker: Orikan the Diviner

I'm would check eBay. The plasmancer comes in the Necron Royal Court which is a big expensive box, but it recently came up in the imperium magazine so there's probably people still parting out those kits for reasonable amounts.
The Technomancer also came out in Imperium magazine, so again ebay might have some for sale.

Ya but at the same time if he tells people "this Psychomancer/Cryptek model is actually a Plasmancer" no one's going to call shenanigans. The Plasmancer isn't even a model available on its own at the moment.

Suggestion for eyes. Get micron pens. I use a 005 micron pen for eyes, and they don't look amazing but at least I can get one small black dot without to much fuss.

As long as the model is clear and the base size is correct, if you're playing with people who care about base sizes being correct. Plasmancers are on 32mm bases; Psychomancers and Chronomancers are on 40mm bases, and the Technomancer with Canoptek Cloak is for some reason on a 50mm base. The reason why you're not finding a store entry for Technomancer is because the model for the Technomancer is just called Cryptek in the store, because it dates back to when there was only one kind of Cryptek and they never updated the store entry or official model name to reflect that 9th edition split Crypteks into a bunch of different units. The reason why you're not finding anything when you search for Plasmancer is because it's part of the Necron Royal Court -- it's all machined as part of one sprue, and so they can't sell any of the models in that kit separately without machining new kits for them, which is an expensive process.

The reason why the Necron Royal Court is machined as part of one sprue is that as part of creating perceived value for edition launch kits, GW fills them with a lot of models machined as monopose kits that share sprues so the production costs are low and more can be fit in the box. The Necron Royal Court was the Necron monopose launch-kit-exclusive sprue for Indomitus, the 9th edition launch kit, alongside the Honored of the Chapter on the Space Marine side.

As long as they aren't also running a Psychomancer as a Psychomancer while also a Psychomancer is a Plasmancer. That's just impolite at best and angle shooting at worst.
