Few things I've dug

- Jodie is great. She carries an authority that I can totally buy that she's awful to basically everyone but they respect her enough to go along with it.
- The centerpiece of a bunch of dudes frozen together is sick.
- Central mystery is fun so far too - someone went missing years ago, and now a base of dudes who were recluse from the town all rat-kinged themselves in ice.
- Setting of it basically being night is a fun
- Lots of indigenous folk, weaved well into the story.
- Seeing Sal and old Dr Who ages me, but they're well cast.
- The S1 callbacks have been pretty "if you didn't watch it, you can still follow this" so far, which is how I think that should be done.

I'm going to continue to complain about the music, and the ai posters are bad, but they're dressing. Core stuff is decent enough that I'm on board.

I like the cast and the setting well enough but I feel like alot of the writing came straight from asking an A.I. to write a Noir script. I assume Fosters character will get a humanising scene to balance the hard rear end traits but they probably should have teased it by now.

Respect for the Scream scare. They got me good.

His dad seems a bit useless and she seems to be mentoring him a little hard. Also something seems to really off about his dad. He seems a bit too comfortable with having case files of murdered women hidden away in his house. He seemed a bit way too mad they made it back to the station.

I like the dynamic of rear end in a top hat Jodie Foster cop and very, very angry native cop who are working together despite hating each others guts. I like the setting of the Long Night, and the corpsicle. And I like the Daltov Pass inspired mystery. And a light, mostly former, Billie Elish enjoy, the opening credits are terrible and very out of place. The Season 1 stuff is ok if it stays in the background and never actually matters, and I choose to assume that guy printed out his own AI posters because he was really proud of them, rather than a weird prop decision.

Overall very enjoyable and I'm looking forward to the rest of it. Every piece of media today gets so over-analyzed on the internet and it seems like there's always an army of nerds trying to one up with performative outrage like some silly TV show meant to entertain you for an hour is actually the worst thing that happened in years and it all looks very exhausting.

I think its funny this thread is going on about the posters and the S1 callbacks and I didnt even notice them lol. Think its been pretty decent so far, but I just really like the setup with the frozen manpile, its really cool (including the 2 alive guys howling). Jodie Foster is playing an all time dickhead. I liked that she was training that kid cop to become a new true detective.

the atmosphere on the show has been pretty good, and I'm eager to see where it goes. How it ends is gonna determine where it goes in the personal true detective rankings.

The one huge thing I got from episode 1 which continued in episode 2 is how insanely lived-in these sets are. I'm constantly gawking at how trashed up everyone's place is. It's extremely real in a way few shows can ever get right and I'm certain some set designer is gonna win an award for it. I really hope some stupid AI poster doesn't ruin that.

if this show were just called "Night Country" and everybody spoke like, Icelandic, the full season were dropped at once, probably on Netflix, and I could watch it with subs on at like 1am when I'm high and didn't feel like playing Rocket League I think I would really have a dumb fun time with it.

But unfortunately it's saddled with the high expectations and baggage of True Detective so it's a bit of a bummer. I realize this is an extraordinarily personal and specific way of expressing this but it's the best I can do, sorry

I'm really liking this so far. I'm a heathen who was disappointed that season 1 never went full supernatural so I'm excited that this season seems to be going down that route.

I think Danvers is stealing the show so far, I also love the sections of her mentoring her ex-stepson. I'm not sure that the ex-husband is guilty of anything so far. I think he's just very incompetent and doesn't give a gently caress about doing his job. He seems to be intentionally sandbagging as much as he can because he resents Danvers, it's crazy that he could get away with being as insubordinate as he is but it makes sense if he used to be the boss or expected to be the boss and was bumped down for her.

Panama Red posted:

I like the direction of this season so far. Occult stuff has always felt like a red herring in True Detective, allusions to supernatural evil when it is the depravity of humanity. The black spiral suggests some kind of primeval violence, as some characters even mention, but in the end it establishes the connection between the scientist Clark and Anna. I think violence against women and indigenous women in particular will be at the center of this season and my theory so far is that "she's awake" refers to an indigenous woman or women "waking up" from captivity in the station, kept there by Clark, perhaps as a procurer for the sinister pervert Bohemian Grove crowd (also recurring through the seasons) or because he has his own sick deal going. Maybe he got the tattoo too because she was forced to get it as part of the pseudo-Epstein sex gang, perhaps in response to her speaking out about the evil energy corporation, which would explain his emotional reaction after getting it. It's possible the scientists were all already naked because Clark was hosting some sex party for them and the woman or women caused an explosion or otherwise forced them out into the ice naked.

I don't think the rest of the station were in on whatever is happening. Clark paid a lot of money so that he could have his private murder cult van and rendevous with Anna in secret. That wouldn't be necessary if the station was part of it. There's also the fact that there's cleaning staff and the delivery guy coming in and out of the station all the time, who would have noticed something suspicious happening there. And these are apparently some big-name scientists from all around the world, not a bunch of backwards hillbillies and rich sociopaths. I don't buy that they would all turn out to be sex pests who are totally cool with keeping sex slaves. It didn't seem like they couldn't leave to visit the town if they really needed to go and get laid. It doesn't seem to be hard to do in this town.

I'm getting a big parallel to season 1 where our apparent killer spent a lot of time getting close to the victim in secret before murdering them. However, I suspect it's important that Anna had that tattoo first. If the Spiral still denotes someone part of the cult then that would imply that she was connected to it first. It would be a big subversion if it turned out that the murdered woman Navarro is obsessed with was killed for a good reason. Maybe there's another reason some people don't want the miners digging too deep. The fact that the water is turning black is definitely bad.

I'm liking this episode more than the first one, although I did spot those posters as "something is hosed up here" almost immediately. It's looking more like what I expect from a True Detective episode. Which is that there's some occult stuff, but it's more likely that it's just a native woman's crazy ex-boyfriend murdered her and mutilated the body. He was her lover, he's obviously batshit crazy, he has her coat, he took her tongue (probably), and he's still alive and is probably the source of that jump scare run across the screen thing that they did in episode 1 that I hated. No idea how the frozen dead guys fit into this or why their clothes were all neatly set out for.

Oh, and I really liked that one guy still being alive after his arm or foot broke off. The howling scream was a good scare.

Love Jodie Foster in this. That look of absolute joy when she finds all those men frozen together, followed by her half-arsedly playing politics and talking about sending the case away. Then her kid (who's also great) starts agreeing with her and she immediately backflips. And then everyone repeatedly fucks up all over the crime scene. Just a really great scene.

Some of this is route -- e.g. the scene where Foster rules lawyers Eccelston -- but Foster is so so good that I don't care.

One of the victims being alive was a great WTF moment, yeah. It's so unexpected. I think the only way it makes sense is if he was infected with the micro-organism that prevents cellular decay, which would make him resistant to the frostbite enough to survive maybe? Clark starts rounding everyone up to go outside, so he injects himself with them as a last-ditch plan or maybe they were all infected and it was some sort of test to see which sample allowed them to survive. The clothes being neatly set out proves this was very deliberate and that someone had a lot of time to set the scene. Clark is definitely the prime suspect right now.

I think the star-shaped wounds on Anna are most likely from the ice screws that they were using to extract the micro-organisms. Something specialised like that makes the most sense. It could be she was infected to test the micro-organisms effects. The tongue having weird cellular damage suggests something was being done to it as well.
