a long long while ago I started to read Kaiji, I stopped around the (keeping things as spoiler free as I can) very improvised gamble following the second card game was held... I felt like that was starting to dwell too much into "misery porn/the good guy never wins/you know the status quo needs to be restored if you want the story to continue, but OMG that is a gross way to do it!!!!"

And yet years after and thanks to Ootsuki's spin off... I'm back! I love the art style (some people might find it ugly but it's really funny to me that you have these CLEARLY EVIL people smiling like assholes all the time), I love the narrator, I love how HIGH STAKES everything is, and of course I LOVE LOVE LOVE that the spin off takes that same style and uses it for the dumbest stories.

A long while ago I also tried to get into the tonegawa spin off but bounced off. I think it's time for another try hehehe.

Anyway this is a very long winded way to say thanks to Emzedoh :)

This chapter reminds me that one of the things I like about the comic is how well it gives the main cast designs that look distinctive in silhouette. That design principle has stuck in my head after hearing the Futurama creators discuss it years ago, and it's always neat to see it used well.

I mentioned in a previous post that the anime actually omitted the summer festival chapter, mashing its recipe up with a later chapter. This is actually the later chapter that it mashed up with! In the anime, Kohei wakes up while Tsumugi is still out, realizes she isn’t home and goes searching, where he finds Tsumugi and Kotori returning home. He yells at her for leaving the house on her own, and then the rest of the episode plays out as it did in chapter 10. I think having both of these stories is good, but I can understand condensing them for the anime adaptation.

I like it when older generation characters have plot-relevant conversations where they can vaguely refer to that incident and that person or what happened 30 years ago and there's no one going "Huhh what does that mean, exposit it clearly to me please!"

You're welcome! I was maybe a little worried the silliness of One Day Outing would undermine the seriousness of Kaiji (or maybe it will? We're far from peak silliness still), but I'm glad it got you to give Kaiji another chance and yo're enjoying it!

Not that I've ever properly read or watched Kaiji. One of these days...

This chapter is actually a semi-crossover with Middle Manager Tonegawa - for more on the Chairman's good mood, read this chapter here:

The secret is that thinking in terms of "living up to your greatest possible potential" is depressing in the first place -- how that comparison actually comes out is a red herring.

In fact, I've got a great comic to recommend which touches on that theme. Can't remember what it's called though.

The first time I read this I assumed Peoria was just annoyed at Masters for being persistent. Now that I'm reading more closely I think she is supposed to be chafing a bit at her orders--but not enough to refuse to do them.
