Its weird because it's not even a parody? It isn't even like every babylon bee or some late-stage onions, where the satire is spoiled by getting mad as gently caress halfway into the punchline, it's just angry opinions phrased bluntly

Hard Times always really leaned into the whole “we’re punk and edgy and we hate capitalism” thing which initially made me think they were like the vestigial blog end of some thirty year old zine or Street Sheet thing and not a Web 2.0 media project wholly dreamed up by millennials and born online in the 2010s

There's so much garbarge you have to sift through when talking about JRPGs because the 2000's never ended for some people. Gotta get through the XPlay-tier 'Japan, the famous island of perverts making porn for every medium' opinions and the 'Japan is a based country where women stopped getting rights in the 1800s and they're all submissive' contributions and whatever the discussion about Square Enix hating disabled people because FF16 wasn't turn-based was even about or how you'd categorize it.

Even once you're past all that, you've got all the people who when they actually do a review about the game talk about someone's tits in a way that'd make Hannibal Lecter seem as restrained and calm a character as Hank Hill.

For a while they were just ranking bands best albums without a parody so they got fully lost in the sauce

It's fine.
Don't worry about it.

What a weird article. I remember seeing someone post it and I assumed the punchline was going to be "Here's these great RPGs! never feel embarrassed about playing a good game!" Because it came out right around the time there was all that discussion about how Japanese game devs don't appreciate the "JRPG" label because it kept being used as a carte blanche excuse to be racist and talk about how all Japanese games suck and are for perverts.

Except there's no punchline. It's like a 20 year old dude turned his Xbox 360 into a time machine and hopped here from 2007 to write for a lovely twitter bait nerd humor website.

Well it certainly made a mistake not mentioning FFX-2 specifically. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate FFX-2 but... yeah.

E: Guess it depends on how you slice 'modern', admittedly.

That the article writer could only list 7 modern series just shows they have just a surface level understanding of JRPGs. Why focus on Persona over SMT as a whole? Where's the Atelier series? Where's the Hyperdimension Neptunia series? Put some actual embarrassing game series on there!

Mrs Randalor loves both of those series, I'm contractually obligated to know they exist.

The article is very stupid yeah. On basically every point it brings up to not even just jrpgs. Like it separates action rpgs from jrpgs as a broader category in the same paragraph dedicated to talking about xenoblade as a franchise, which apparently doesn't cout as the former for.some reason.

It's entirely just some weirdo wringing their hands in worry about other people possibly thinking they're a loser for playing jrpgs.

its really insanehow JRPGs got this reputation as 'for unfuckable male nerds' considering the actual demographic of people who play them.

also fire emblem engage doesnt even have jiggle physics

Everybody in my circles who loves jrpgs is a 30-something with a respectable 9-to-5, either owns or is in the process of acquiring a house, and half of them have kids, sometimes with each other.

So depending on how you look at it it's actually worse.
