Don't know if anyone else encountered this, but if you meant to play with Japanese audio and still get random English audio at the start of NPC dialogues or on the level-up screen, switch over to English and then back to Japanese again. Things were gonna get heated if the game forced me to hear yongyea Kiryu at some point lmao

How do you do, fellow antifa?

The combat really feels so much more polished and speedy than Y7. I'm a sicko who preferred the JRPG turn (and I probably wouldn't have ever played the series without it) but I love being able to position myself so I can punch a random encounter into his friend and knock them both out, the team followup attacks and picking up objects to use feel much better too.

This game obviously rules but I do not want my man Ichiban consigned to perma-virgin status. I hope we can rectify his blown date with Saeko down the line

Played up to chapter 3 and while the game is great, especially when getting to Hawaii, its pacing is possibly the worst out of any Yakuza game so far. We can argue about 3's slow start, but it still had gameplay and sidestories, and new mini-games.
I've put 5 hours into IW, and maybe half an hour of it is a bit of running around, but it feels like non-stop cutscenes intersperced with a battle or two. Sure, you can walk around a bit but by this time in 7 you would probably already have unlocked theater and poundmates. I feel like I am finally at the point where I can be free and I can't play any more today.

That said, none of the cutscenes feel superfluous other than maybe one of three date preparation ones (take your pick here), and once you get to Hawaii they're some of the best the series has to offer. Motherfucker who's voiced by DIO in particular is a loving great character that's better than many of the series' actual final bosses. Eiji is a wonderful character, too.

Really hope I'm out of cutscene hell now that I saw the cutscene featured in the first trailer. Not sure how replayable this game will be due to this frontload of info.

I'm also guessing they took out the 8 out of US title because they wanted it to feel self-contained so that players wouldn't be afraid to jump in but it looks like it might be the worst Yakuza to start with! It's very much Like a Dragon: Part 2. I don't think the series ever had so many returning characters and yakuza groups in its story from one game to the next.

I mean yeah but it's not clear to the casual audience. It's more of a Village situation with RE where I'm guessing devs don't really want anyone to feel like they need to be familiar with the games

They didn’t call 7 “7” either so this isn’t new

Look, Ichiban is many things, but he also is so bad at dates that he retroactively went back in time and made any dates he had that went well not happen.

Holy crap there’s tons of subtitle settings. That’s a welcome change from Y6 which had white subtitles that somehow always blended into the many white backgrounds.

With our special guest star, RUSH! YAYYYYYYYYY

You can also turn off the Skip prompt during skippable cutscene dialog. I don't know if that was an option in prior games and I just never found it until now, but I'm glad I did find it because the big button prompt in the corner during dialog scenes was pretty distracting. You can still skip the lines with the prompt disabled, of course.

fake edit: Apparently, the option was added in Gaiden but I just never looked in that particular menu.

Auto-advance can be turned off now, but on the other hand the "floaty" subtitles disappear if you hit pause, which is kind of annoying. Not helped by the fact that Ichiban has a lot of internal monologues during those sections at the start of the game and they flash by real quick.

The game’s first spoken lines are in English and for a second there I thought it had defaulted to English but then I realized they were white people.

It feels a lot better, yeah.

The only thing I'm kind of uncertain about is how to make decisions involving "using objects as weapons." For trash fights it's kind of a no-brainer since it's just an easy way to preserve MP, but in harder fights I'd want to know exactly how the damage from using environmental objects compares with my actual skills.

The worst part was when he apologizes and she's just like "it's fine don't worry about it!" and then it cuts to a year later and him looking at his last text message that she hasn't replied to.

It depends on the object. Like a bicycle is better than a regular attack or maybe a weak physical attack while a rocket launcher is probably the best move available to you outside of the absolute highest end attacks.

Ichiban is the loving best, as someone who has had not quite as rough a life as he has but has had a couple of false starts and is only now getting my feet under me at around his age, I find him an inspirational figure. As weird as that might be to say about a videogame character.
