Leave me to do my dark bidding on the internet!
Been derping around in practice, customisation and arcade quest mode since I got off work, sticking with Kuma for the time being and uh I have no real clue what I'm doing. I picked up a couple of the higher damage suggestion strings from practice and fish for openings with df+2 or F, F+2. Heat I mostly use as an armoured counter but I haven't found a follow-up after landing a heat attack and doing a heat rush forward - is this just supposed to put you in their face so you can start a mix-up?

Coming from SF6 it's funny how slow a lot of the lows are in this game - they're turgid and very easy to block for the most part.

I wish you could keybind sidestepping like you can in Tekken 3 but it's probably a side effect of side-walking being a thing. I don't side-step. I should probably side-step more.

Unless I've missed something obvious I couldn't find anywhere that told me what the little symbols in the practice movelists mean which is a bit annoying.

Game's a lot of fun I can't wait to see stuff develop and eventually go online and fight people and lose.

Two minor gripes but you cant select violet from the lee select screen like before and also the character portraits for everyone are really boring and limited compared to last version. Gonna focus hard on Azu for the moment but messed around with lee for a bit to try some acid rains and when he has heat the acid rain and mist trap dont need perfect timing! Kinda lame imo as watching lee specialists is fun but oh well.

I remember Tekken 7 having pretty limited portrait selection, then most of them got added a few months in. There's still time.

Played some online. I feel like I'm back to being a mashing noob. I even accidently ki charged.

I noticed you can put the ponytail accessories anywhere you want. It's real handy if you want to give girls beards. Or have tendrils of hair growing out of your eyes to psych your opponent out.

Starting to flow with Azucena a bit. She's real fun, still getting used to what to do in the stances/stance switching though. I feel like knowing which each character can do in heatmode will be a pretty big early knowledge check its more variable and big than I initially thought.

I love Yoshimitsu's entrance in story mode: "Is a sword against the rules? OBVIOUSLY. But ninjas don't abide by the rules!!!"

The follow up is even better where after declaring a sword is technically illegal, Bryan opens their match with a loving minigun

Going to a new iteration of a character is always rough, I feel... My muscle memory for Leo in 7 keeps kicking in, and while the combos technically work they are far from optimal in 8. I do like her new moves, feels like he's got more options than in 7.

Do you mean like in a room or private lobby? Select Player Match from the Online menu and then create a room/session. You can invite people from your friends list that way. There's also going to one of the lounges and meeting up that way.

Midscreen hold back while you land to do a back tech roll. Near a wall hit a punch when you hit the ground to roll into the background or a kick to roll into the foreground. Both of these can put you into a bad oki situation if done predictably but in general they are fairly low risk and avoid getting hit from grounded follow-ups.

Something that's not obvious but is of huge consequence is that getting up from Face Down Feet Towards and Face Up Feet Away (ie the positions that require you to turn while recovering) have frames where you are absolutely vulnerable to attacks and need to be considered with caution.

Learned an important thing tonight. Devil Jin is a bridge too far...for now. He's a very cool character with such an interesting kit and a huge kill ceiling and it's everything I want... But that skill floor is enormous. Future me will come back to him when I'm generally better, but today is not gonna be the day.

I was getting lag in Story Mode on PC after a few battles, but figured how to fix it. Thought I'd share.

Pause and alt-tab for a few seconds. Whatever is happening seems to be reset by that.

I suspect it's some sort of pre-loading that can't keep up with the battle transitions.

Paul's b1,2 animation changing from those goofy swings he used to have is seriously messing with my day-1 combo timings.

My first experience with online play was getting blown up by a Lars who kept doing the same canned combo over and over again. I'm actually looking forward to having a bit of time to lab a response using the replay tools.

I really wish Bamco would tell you what the online player stats actually mean. I'm apparantly as S+ rank underdog... does that mean I make a lot of comebacks? Win against people with a higher w/l ratio than me?

This video is a good watch. There's a lot of options on what to do next after you hit the ground in tekken (which is fun and adds depth!) and it can seem confusing at first but it will quickly become second nature as to what options seem best give the situation.

Since you can always select P1 side some people are pretty scuffed when they are swapped to P2 mid match, especially at lower levels and especially for certain techniques (like wave dashing). If you notice this you can switch sides easily with your basic 2+4 throw. The basic 1+3 throw does the same damage but keeps sides the same.

It's also fairly trivial to give up a combo ender to simply jump over them as they fall, as some players would rather mash breaks if the opponent knows they are noticeably weaker on p2. Similarly, they will dash in and immediately try to 2+4 you back if they do end up on the wrong side.

It's all pretty silly hoops to jump through instead of, you know, picking p2 side once and awhile and practice but it absolutely does happen.

This is a great, but extremely exhaustive and perhaps mildly overwhelming video. They go through all the Tekken specific stuff and cover niche heat system stuff and other things that are specific to 8. But it's also probably info overkill so take it with a grain of salt. But helped me, a noted Tekken idiot, start to understand the game better.

Half of my online matches disconnect right when I'm close to winning. Are these ragequits? Everybody I play against has a 0% disconnect rate. Also, is there any way to see my own disconnect stat? I've never intentionally disconnected mid-match, but I wonder how these potentially random disconnects might affect me.

I've gotten a few tbaggers, but no rage quitters. Connections have been decent for the most part, a few laggy matches but I'm going to blame the console users on wifi. Tekken 7 used to have a scold screen the few times my connection dropped (I have never ragequit!), so I'm assuming you'd see that if it was blaming you.

Are you using lots of low attacks, grabs, or 10-strings? All valid but they seem to make certain people super salty.
