Some really cool details in this, Kawakami talks to Shanahan about his experiences with Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll. https://theathletic.com/5225441/2024/01/24/kyle-shanahan-49ers-belichick-carroll-kawakami/quote:Which is probably why he immediately frowned hard when I told him he sort of calls games like an old coach — valuing every possession, playing the percentages, avoiding daredevil strategies that add too much risk to the potential result. quote:I remember the first time I got to play against him (Bill Belichick). It was in Houston (in 2009, Shanahan’s fourth year as Texans assistant and second as an offensive coordinator). … And they had this huge all-out blitz thing they were doing … and I was doing the third-down thing and I couldn’t come up with a protection to pick it up. They were just always bringing one extra. And I remember making up a protection for my first time and trying it out because we had to do it because it was something he was doing schematically. quote:Pete’s a different deal because I remember (when Shanahan was working) in Houston, he was down there with the Trojans at USC, and (then-Trojan assistant) Steve Sarkisian called me up and they were trying to get me to come down there and to work with Pete. And it was real tempting ’cause of what they were doing and stuff. But I kinda had the same position at Houston and I was such an NFL fan. But that’s where I felt we got close to working together.

Oline Committee video was excellent, I miss Boone JD gives a few more options than just run the ball (which is surely the best option). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCs8r2QvseM

My favorite thing about the Purdy debate is that almost nothing that can possibly happen in the next 3 weeks is going to change anybody's mind. This is going to provide content for at least the next 3 years.

Threoretically, Purdy could win Super Bowl MVP while barefoot and padless, after every o lineman has gone down to injury and Aiyuk, Deebo and McCaffrey have been kidnapped by aliens, with only Kittle left to hike the ball before running his route. Shanahan has an aneurysm after the first snap and the rest of the game is called by Jed York from his luxury suite, and people would still say it was due to Shanahan’s brilliance and the talented skill players, and Purdy just managed the game.

As much as I want the Lions to win, they'd have to do something truly spectacular to win even if Deebo wasn't playing.

Going in, I felt Wilks should load the box and force them to pass. Take away their greatest strength and all. The sort of thing Belichick has done forever. But nope, typical vanilla D they have been playing all year.
