And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

Yokozuna sumo is winning sumo. But at least Koto gets a consolation prize of ozeki promotion, presumably.

13 wins got him 33 wins in 3, and he had excellent sumo, and a hard-fought playoff. It would be crazy for him not to be promoted.

Supposedly the NHK broadcast said they were already in a meeting to confirm his promotion. 33 in 3, strong fights, solid playoff sumo. I'd be shocked if they say no.

Is it mid-March yet?

There's no way that Kotonowaka doesn't get it imo. 33 wins over three bashos, ending in a 13-2 playoff loss to a yokozuna? And he'd be a Japanese ozeki without Takakeisho's chronic injury issues? No way they pass that up

Looking at the final standings: Good Lord, S/K and M1-5 have been an absolute bloodbath. S/K is gonna look like this next basho:

S: Daieisho / Wakamotoharu
K: Abi / Nishikigi or Asanoyama

And both Onosato and Onosho are likely to be in the meatgrinder in March just by virtue of there being only 7 KKs in M1-10.

Teru-Kiri: Holy crap, Teru loving ragdolled Kiri. Not even close. Not much else to say other than Teru showing Kiri the difference between the Yokozuna and Ozeki.

Koto-Tobi: Tobi gave it his all, but not much of a threat to a motivated Koto. Nice takedown by Kotonowaka.

Ura-Ryuden: Perfect match. Ryuden gets hosed in a match that he should have had. Ura pulls off more Ura magical bullshit with the sweet suplex. Looks like Ura's just one and done in sanyaku, but dude can still take anyone except the top class that's good enough to counter his style.

Tamawashi-Onosato: Guys making a run before they get a topknot is cool. Kid looks like a real deal. Hope he gets high enough and Teru is healthy to see a no-top knot Kinoshita because that's just funny.

Yoko/Ozeki runs (Kiri/Koto lumped together to avoid match spoilers): Teru yeeted Kiri so hard that would have DQed him from the rope even if they were considering giving it to him.

Kotonowaka is dead, long live Kotozakura. Even if the 33 didn't clinch it, a strong performance against the Kaiju in the playoff should give some bonus points. And Ozeki promotions are recommended by the judging committee rather than the YDC. Then judging committee is chaired by one Sadogatake, so I'm guessing the kid isn't getting screwed over

Ura: The last tsutaezori (underarm forward drop) to be used in makuuchi was by Ura himself back in the 2022 aki basho. Before that it hadn't been used in makuuchi in 20 years (by Asashoryu). When I saw him twisting and positioning that left arm I was shouting "Do the backward thing! Do the backward thing!" Goddamn, what an exciting match.

Okay so I've updated everything per Kenning's last post ruling on the un-auto-trades on Day 13 which means taking back Asanoyama comes with a trade deduction since it's considered another trade. Still a net positive overall for both goonzeki who took this option.

I also added in the revised Juryo tiebreaker bonus but I'm a bit unclear as to whether it actually counts for points. The original post on Juryo made it seem like it was supposed to only be a tie-breaker "bonus" and my read of it was that these points don't count to the overall points but I might be mistaken here given Kenning's musings and rule change. If so, then the table will need to be updated to add 0.5 or 1 point more for some folks. As of now, the table only treats it as the 7th tie-breaker.

Because of the various changes and rulings in the last week, it would be very time consuming for me to revise the day-by-day tracker to reflect past days scores accurately so I'll just post the final day results along with the detailed tracker.

All scores and results in this post are unofficial. Kenning's post shall be the official final results.
