poisonpill posted:I liked Barbie better than Oppenheimer. I think a lot of the disconnect is that Barbie was a fun movie that dealt with women’s issues; and women’s issues are kind of by default assumed to be less important and less weighty than men’s issues like building a big bomb. So even though Barbie covers things pretty head on and important to society like patriarchy, commercialization, etc; it’s categorized along with Marvel stuff and the Academy made sure it wasn’t gonna be seriously considered as though it were a real movie. I bolded the coolest elements of Barbie imo, given the subject matter it’s tackling. Its something you could walk away from feeling good and like the problems it pointed out can be taken on, whereas a lot of films dealing with serious issues in our culture are almost cartoonishly bummery, so while they can be very well made and have insight, they’re alienating to a general audience and, in my opinion, just further dispirit the already bummed audience who werent alienated. It was a dang high concept summer blockbuster about dolls that dealt with some real poo poo without falling victim to cynicism, but also not turning to complete treacle. EDIT: Also I saw Suitable Flesh last night and man was that dogshit. The gently caress was Jay talking about? Some not quite well enough acted or written for Skinamax-rear end bullshit. mysterious frankie fucked around with this message at 19:40 on Jan 28, 2024 |

I didn't feel like any of it was super actionable in the end, which was my main complaint. I liked the movie overall but it kinda felt like they just illustrated the issues with brutal honesty (and made it genuinely funny). Like the whole second half of the movie is entirely about toxic masculinity but the movie offers no real contrast on how to not be like that. Still a good movie, just didn't stick the landing for me.

PostNouveau posted:[video type="youtube"]kL8Ol0C76dQ[video] I never thought I'd see it, but we officially have Jay confirmed for straight. Talking about Showgirls for nearly 40 minutes and not bringing up "it's from Versayce" or how the dogfood scene at Spago ends with Elizabeth Berkley and Gina Gershon toasting with tortilla chips is the straightest of straight behavior. They also didn't bring up how Verhoeven was dating Elizabeth Berkley at the time, which I guess makes sense as it doesn't reflect very well on him. That said, the comparison to the weird convulsing sex scene in the pool with the scene of the executive being blown to bits by ED-209 was a stroke of genius.

I haven’t seen any modern film effectively address modern issues with prescriptive force. Which is ok; I’m not sure I want people hosed enough in the head to get a film made in Hollywood teaching people how to live. It did the best you could hope for though, which is encouraging a positive dialogue around a serious topic for a wide audience.

In honor of Rey getting her own trilogy, what’s the most baffling wtf part of the sequels? I’m going with Finn and Rose’s plan in The Last Jedi. They guess that only the lead ship is tracking them for some reason (“tracking” being an incredibly important plot point that literally never gets resolved, or discovered how it’s happening), so they then decide that they must sneak on board to disable the tracking, which can only be done by one guy in the galaxy. That guy is at the craps table on casino planet wearing a gilded flower. So they go there (in the middle of a chase, mind you) and find him but get zapped because they parked on the lawn. Then in prison they meet another guy who says he can do it for them, so they hire him, instead. It’s all very boring to watch and none of it ultimately matters anyway (thanks to the “brilliant plan” that they wouldn’t tell our main characters)

poisonpill posted:In honor of Rey getting her own trilogy, what’s the most baffling wtf part of the sequels? The fact that they can easily leave the chase and come back destroys a lot of the tension that should be inherent in the chase. It's like if the protagonist of Duel hopped on a quick flight to London for a few days in the middle of the movie.

pthighs posted:The fact that they can easily leave the chase and come back destroys a lot of the tension that should be inherent in the chase. Yeah. Add in that the entire side-plot was done because the studio wouldn't allow Rian Johnson to put Finn and Poe in the same storyline together (because they were scared by the internet chatter about how they might be gay) and you can see how much of the story was basically a middle finger to Disney. The sequel movies are completely nonsensical. So many weird little things that have no rhyme or reason. The PT has a LOT of dumb poo poo but at least the movies have some sort of internal logic.

poisonpill posted:In honor of Rey getting her own trilogy, what’s the most baffling wtf part of the sequels? Everything that happens in previous movies is completely invalidated every time. Everyone who fought and died to beat the empire, and succeeded only for there to be a new, identical empire to fight now. It made the whole thing feel like a Saturday morning cartoon where the reset button has to get pressed between episodes. Doesn't matter how many times you win, how many progressively bigger and bigger ships you blow up, at the start the next movie you're still going to be the hopelessly outnumbered plucky rebels fighting the big overwhelmingly powerful empire. Also Leia surviving in such a stupid way in the second movie, only to do absolutely nothing for the rest of the series and then disappear under a blanket. They knew drat well the actress was dead, they could have just let the character die and nothing about the story would change. The evil sith knife. Chewie death fake out. God, just everything.
