Cave Story is one of the most perfect games ever made and it's time for me to do my semi-regular playthrough of it.

It even had a port on the GP2X that you bet your rear end I played through multiple times on that too.

edit: I just found out that the person that ported Cave Story to the GP2X is an Austrian teacher who was one of the lead programmers for Binding of Isaac, also ported Cave Story to the DS and did a bunch of ports of Nicalis' game Nightsky. All bangers

That's definitely what I said and not a reach at all.

The entire era was functionally the end of interesting AAA games from anywhere. The beginning of the 360/PS3 era was this awkward few years where Japanese publishers were chasing the boring Western standards of the time.

Basically all AAA games have sucked since Gears of War and CoD4 caused the mega trend of shooters that are various shades of brown, and it wasn't til a couple years post Dark Souls that Japanese Publishers stopped outsourcing their games to mediocre western studios and giving us boring poo poo like DmC or Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

While not technically wrong, you defended the remarks Phil Fish made, broad generalizations rooted in ignorance, by essentially just ignoring all of the refutations to that premise presented in the discussion. While your statement here is not technically one that people would find disagreeable, it deflects from the root issue people had with your post. That, essentially, you were attempting to speak authoritatively from a place of ignorance towards people who were more knowledgeable on the subject than you. And you were doing it to defend someone else who also spoke from a place of ignorance and did so both very publicly, and abrasively, to such a degree that people correctly pegged his statement as being obviously culturally insensitive, even for the 2010's.

If I were in your position here, before changing the subject I would have at least taken the L with grace and admitted ignorance on the topic so people could move on. This also would reposition myself as ultimately a reasonable person who happened to have misspoke.

I absolutely loved 90% of Alien: Isolation...it's a shame that the final 10% was a really bad last part and a tiny ending, complete with a cliffhanger that will forever be unresolved. Still one majorly atmospheric and scary game, mind you.

Yeah I went through a phase years ago where I was dipping my toe into a conspiracy-adjacent part of the internet (bigfoot hunters, lol lol) and trying to argue against their dumber ideas and it is loving exhausting. That "simple but long-winded to debunk" aspect is the worst, especially since after you expend all that energy to debunk one point they'll immediately shift the goalposts and sub in another equally stupid conspiracy, and so on and so forth.

As for the white supremacy thing, once it's pointed out to you then yeah, you see it everywhere in conspiracy circles, it really does underpin the entire 'movement'. This old All Gas No Brakes episode about visiting a Flat Earth convention and it turns out they're all super mad about the (((((((bankers))))))))) was probably the exact moment where I went "Ohhhhh, I seeeee"

Yeah, believing in a bunch of conspiracy theories is a gigantic red flag. The fact that they buy into demonstrably dumb poo poo is part of it, but the real :redflag: is that there's almost always a foundation of antisemitism underneath all that woo. The deeper they are into the online communities the worse it's likely to be.

But not everyone gets to make the choice to avoid relationships with conspiracy nuts. A huge number of people got Q-pilled in recent years and I've heard horror stories of people whose spouse or family members got sucked into QAnon and turned into crazy assholes in a very short amount of time, that sounds like a complete nightmare.

That's the worst thing yeah. The only conspiracy communities are almost tailor-made to suck people in, and then radicalize them until they become almost unrecognisable.

Yeah, occasionally the QAnon Anonymous podcast does episodes where listeners tell their stories of dealing with Q-pilled family members, and it is just the most depressing poo poo. That was my favorite "twist" in his latest series of videos.

It's both hilarious and really sad that a lot of conspiracy stuff is tied to and leads to boring rear end antisemitism and racism. I have nostalgia goggles for the early 90s when I was way too young to be staying up sneaking listens to Coast to Coast AM and poo poo like Unsolved Mysteries, The X-Files, and other such conspiracy bait. But as I got older, the more I learned about what they all "meant".

David Icke is the funniest. You start with "Oh dude thinks there's LIZARDS controlling the world, lol" and then learn "oh, his whole fan base and most other conspiracy people say he means Lizard = Jews....ew", and then you learn "Oh cool, Icke came out to be extra super clear when he says 'Lizard' he really honestly means some alien lizards from space, lol hahaha" and then finally "Aw gently caress he just thinks that Jews are lizards from space....".

It's funny in it's own weird way, but still very sad. Can't we just enjoy dumb mysteries of the world and laugh at weird explanations without it ALWAYS going to back to racism and bigotry?

I think one of the points of the Dan Olsen video is that the cause and effect is different than what you'd expect. People don't conclude that Jews are lizards because they're trying to find an answer to the mysteries of the world, they start from hating Jews (or immigrants or LGBT people or etc) and work backwards to create a framework where the good guys are people they like and the bad guys are people they don't.They're fundamentally incurious people.
