yeah I think the kind of player who would buy a deck because it has those cards is probably also the kind of player who wouldn't check decklists before buying.

I think there is something to be said for precons to be at least kinda competitive. I remember when I first started playing Magic, I was really bad. my first deck was the 5-color precon from the newest set, Invasion, and since it already had all colors, I just added every card I had to it. I remember when one of my friends just played the RB precon out of the box and kicked everyone's rear end and we thought that deck was OP as poo poo. It started an arms race and we all learned how to make better decks at the end.

Now, those intro precons were REALLY loving bad, but we were worse then. But it should still work with a semi-competently constructed deck, to show people what one looks like. There's always room for upgrades, and maybe the packaging could include a couple of examples of upgrades with the deck list?

Or they could sell, for example, a well-constructed Simic deck including a fold-out showing you some other Simic commanders you might want to build that synergise with some, but not all, of the cards in the deck you just bought.

I also thing the desirability of reliquary tower points to a different issue. Discarding to hand size feels bad. And, usually, you discard to hand size because you got mana screwed, and not because you cast braingeyser. People associate discarding to hand size with the "I got screwed" feelbads and not the much smaller "I can't hold all these limes" feelbads. It doesn't matter that the solution is to put better (and probably more) lands in your deck so that you can cast your spells. They will instead put reliquary tower in because they think it solves their problem (while in reality it maybe makes it slightly worse)

Imo, the max hand size should be different than the starting hand size. Would anything bad happen if it got bumped up to 10? Screw is still just as bad, but the new player doesn't get the double whammy of feelbads when it happens.

If you're sitting on 7 or 10 cards and are mana screwed, it's gonna feel bad no matter what since your deck is so bad and doesn't have any mana or ways to get mana. Having more unplayable cards in your hand isn't going to help.

I feel like most commander games I've played had the issue of everyone top decking more than anyone overloaded with cards.

I think the best way to teach a new player not to feel bad about discarding is teaching them how the graveyard is just an extended hand. Those cards are in your hand still if you build the deck around your loss aversion.

Discarding to hand is something that I enjoy doing with my Slimefoot and Squee deck. Feels great to throw an Etali or Butcher of Malakir into the yard.

It kind of does due to the little holofoil stamp on the bottom.

Hello thread!
I'd like to jump on precon talk. I'll be visiting friends soon and we're planning on getting me a deck from the local game store. I previously played a few games on untap with decks they built for me but otherwise have no clue about meta or most of the rules still.
Reading the last few pages seems like I shouldn't just pick a precon by style, they can be pitfalls? Is there some kind of tier list or whatever I could check out? Anything I should look out for?

Honesty, for just starting out picking a precon that you vibe with is a perfectly reasonable approach. Yeah the manabase won't be great and you will want to cut a few clunky/overcosted cards for interaction but they tend to have decent value and can execute a game plan out of the box. The starter commander decks were quite bad and should be avoided but aside from that I'm not sure there are any definite traps released lately? Maybe the Deadly Disguise deck upcoming in MKM? I think that deck looks pretty stinky.

All the decks from Ixalan and Karlov Manor are solid and with a $40 upgrade package that fine tunes the deck you'll be good to go to your LGS and play without feeling like you're getting dumpstered.

Lipstick Apathy
Yeah. All four of them have lousy manabases (expected) and some clunky high cost cards (also expected), but their concepts are solid and actually pretty cool. I may actually get them all just because they're all kinda sweet. (And I like collecting decent precons that I can jam at low level tables without worrying about dumpstering newbies.)

I think the main reason precons have temple of the false god and reliquary tower is because commander players, for whatever reason, want those cards. It's not a teaching moment. It's just putting cards players want in a product so that they will buy it.

Youtube was making it sound like it was going to be pretty good out of the box. I wanted to test mine out today, but I've been so busy I haven't even had a chance to open it. I'm half tempted not to open it because it's selling for double it's price, but those cards are too cute to deny.

I'm doing a budget build challenge ($50) with a few friends and want to put something together that is competitive, but not like ridiculously oppressive (Zada etc.). I think token decks and combo decks in general are something I'd like to stay away from. Meta is playing a fairly high number of boardwipes/interaction -- they are mostly veteran players who think they're running power 5 decks that are actually power 8.

I think I like the idea of mono-blue, or blue and something else. Counterplay is good, but I want a clear path to a win condition too. Weird cards are cool. Old border cards are also cool as hell.

Any strong feelings about commanders I should check out?

I have a weird kami of the crescent moon deck that just includes every "everyone draws a shitload of cards" card and then has a few mill staples in there and forced card draw to seal the deal. I don't know if that'd appeal but it's a lot of fun when it pops off. I bet a version of it could easily run under 50 bux

Heed my words and become a master of the Heart (of Thorns).
Does anyone have a decklist for Rin and Seri with a bunch of cats/dogs, all the land fetching sorceries/instants, lots of card draw, but very little interaction or hostile actions? I.e. a carebear decklist for a 9 year old girl that gets to DO a lot (play a bunch of lands, draw lots of cards) but not really DO-DO a lot (attack, deal damage, board wipe)

My daugher seems curious about magic. She always tries to find excuses to orbit around the game table when me and the boys are playing, so i figure i could look into getting her a deck. Will be a good way to motivate her to read english at least. (tertiary language). Have not succeeded finding such a decklist on moxfield.
