at the founding conference of the IWW, the organization obviously did not have any formal rules for anything set down yet, including how to issue or verify credentials for people attending the conference. as a result of this, although the majority of the attendees were there representing various labor unions or socialist political organizations, one dude showed up with hand-made credentials issued by himself, authorizing him to attend the conference as a representative of himself. there was not actually any rule saying you couldn't do this, so they just let him participate.

This isn't political (well, it was very political back then) but problems with founding organizations reminded me of the fact that before the Finnish Literature Society could name itself the Finnish Literature Society, Elias Lönnrot had to invent a Finnish word for literature.
