I think people like that tend to move out of China as quickly as they can, the more vocal of them becoming expatriate dissidents and going on long angry YouTube rants. Edit: I don't pay too much attention myself but my boomer mom does and it turns out that when you listen to a lot of angry Chinese expatriates the community tends to align with anyone at all who's anti-China which is how you get Chinese Trump supporters, because he's showing that bastard Xi what for! Pro-Churchill, yes. I once had to give a quick and dirty explanation of the British Parliamentary system to a confused Chinese friend who didn't understand how the British could be so disloyal as to choose someone else as Prime Minister after WWII.

Going to be interesting to see how the liquidation of Evergrande plays out. WIll China allow the companies onshore stuff be part of the liquidation or not is the big one. Allowing it will have problems internally with continued building etc or not allowing it will have ramifications going forward with investments from abroad. The government could bail out Evergrande and other development companies but it looks like they aren't going to do that.

Tai posted:The government could bail out Evergrande and other development companies but it looks like they aren't going to do that. A bail out would be dumb as hell since a ton of Evergrande's cash debts got bought up by outside-of-china investors at steep discounts. It'd be a direct transfer of money to rich assholes. Investors always claim poo poo like "oh no we can't trust you, that means we won't invest in your country anymore" but they are loving liars. Nationalization would be better, to do things like complete some of the construction projects (keep paying the construction companies, deliver apartments to small investors) and cancel some (return some money to small investors). Tell everyone else to take a hike. Their property bubble is popping hard but that would at least be a little help. But that makes everyone unhappy, and the rich people very unhappy. And Evergrande is really just the biggest drop in the bucket for China's overall problem.

Badly worded by me but this is what I meant as a bail out. Make sure people who have paid for a house actually get a house or a refund. Also make it illegal to buy a house that isn't 100% built. So much debt on imaginary houses is one of the dumbest things China has allowed to happen.

I think part of the problem with that is that the last dynasty was Manchu and nobody is going to get remotely anywhere suggesting we bring back a Manchurian emperor, while the Ming was so long ago (and the Qing pretty good at wiping it out) that any claim to the bloodline would be absurdly specious at best and nobody has particularly clear generational memories of the dynasty, so you're not going to get the same kind of Hohenzollern/Hapsburg/Romanov nostalgia. Besides, most of the time it's less sexy to restore an old dynasty than to proclaim a new one, so if there ARE any Chinese monarchists I imagine what they'll be calling for is for all to hail the Xi dynasty, ten thousand years may it reign. Edit: For what it's worth I've never heard of any Chinese monarchists. Tomn fucked around with this message at 17:08 on Jan 30, 2024 |

A perfect communist society need not be judged under such a distorted lens.
