There is another Disney show that kind of pulls that off, but I don't want to name it because it kind of spoils the whole show once you know about it.

The pilot is more cracker Succession but then by episode 2 things start getting weird and then it is full wacky by the third one which is about the secret factory.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

I thought it was a good show although the episodes towards the end I thought were lower quality.

The gag in the last episode of someone walking into the son's room while he is using the boob slider in a porn game was an inspired scene and I had to pause from laughing too hard.

I liked the first episode of Grimsburg.
It definitely had the issue of a pilot that's trying to introduce such a completely insane world has to have, where it's trying to cram everyone's shtick into one story, but it charmed me, and it gave me one full belly laugh with the alcoholic cat cutaway so I'm up to give it room to grow. Once it gets to do more episodes where it focuses more on individual characters I think it'll pick up a lot.

Not sure how I feel about the kid and his imaginary skeleton friend yet, though.

Another Kevin Smith Masters of the Universe series dropped on Netflix and I thought it was really worth watching. I say this as someone with no real understanding of the lore or whatever and whose exposure was basically limited to owning some of the toys as a small child, vague memories of the 80s cartoon, and the most recent miniseries Smith did. There's some surprisingly good character moments regarding characters who were created solely to tell toys and the animation was really strong throughout.

Also there are a bunch of sick new character designs which would make excellent toys, but that's neither here nor there.

Anyone else here watching Hazbin Hotel on Amazon Prime?

My thoughts are pretty concise. I think it sucks they didn't get confirmed for season 2 until season 1 aired. It's super obvious that they were afraid they wouldn't get a 2nd season and are running through their plot while not letting the show breath. When compared to what I've seen of Helluva Boss, this seems to very much be a "out of control" situation. I hope with season 2 they get more time to breath and explore things.

Overall, I like the show. I couldn't get into Helluva Boss because everyone was so mean and lovely, but Hazbin Hotel has the central premise of "helping sinners" and centers on a fuzzball protagonist so its more my taste. The music slaps, the characters need more time to grow, the plot is actually decent, the animation is good, and my biggest complaint is the pacing.

What do y'all think?

A couple colorists who work with me at a vfx studio were fuming the red levels in Hazbin Hotel weren't balanced properly so it can cause some serious eye fatigue. I dunno. I tried watching it but the style isn't for me, didn't watch enough to feel it hurt my eyes.

Hej min vän, hur står det till?
The excessively busy/angular designs in movement do not help matters, neither do the camera moves.

This might be my own sensibilities at play here but I feel like a lot of indie projects ironically have a tendency to over-animate, which can cause either a disconnect with the vocal performance or confuse the scene overall by pulling focus on overshoot and settles for movements that don't justify that level of inertia. The whole "sometimes less is more" principle, I guess?

RE: Red, there were at some point regulations about the amount of red and white you could use due to prolonged eye strain.

Heh, doesn't help that most of the characters in HB are red and all, being demons. But that's probably just Vivzie's style, and it's been toned way down from her tumblr days.

Also probably doesn't help that indie animation projects are starry-eyed kids getting to live their dreams, and they sure as gently caress aren't gonna tone it down. And also in this environment it's hard to blame them to try to get some closure with the time they have, with how rare it is for cartoons to get actual endings even at the best of times, let alone in the cancel-happy streaming age.

Is this red levels thing actually scientifically-proven and that would potentially present to viewers for most screens and with typical viewing times? I don't have anything to say it's not, it just sounds like it could be a "truism" passed down as gospel, but ultimately poorly-sourced to a single, small sample size study from decades ago using long obsolete tech.

Hej min vän, hur står det till?
Again this might be an issue of sensibilities, but my own tactic given a similar uncertain circumstance about full season orders would NOT be to speed-run an extremely intricate story precisely because trying to figure out proper pacing or knowing when you're going to have to pull the trigger on an ending is even more difficult in that production environment. Like, decide what kind of show you're going to be and not pin high ambitions onto a company that isn't sure what they want to even do with you.

Plus if you want to have "haha this character is getting dragged off for sex they don't want" jokes, it's really tough tonal whiplash to then ask us to care about the same subject matter for a big character moment in the same episode let alone moments apart.

I mentioned this briefly elsewhere but I thought this episode was really bad and made me entirely give up on the show, and it's a big reason why I'd be happy for discussion about the show to happen in its own thread rather than here.
